The propounded dualism in Content Analysis as quantitative and qualitative approaches is widely supported and justified in nursing literature. Nevertheless, another sort of dualism is proposed for Qualitative Content Analysis, suggesting the adoption of "inductive" and/or "deductive" approaches in the process of qualitative data analysis. These approaches have been referred and labelled as "inductive" or "conventional"; and "deductive" or "directed" content analysis in the literature. Authors argue that these labels could be fallacious, and may lead to ambiguity; as in effect, both approaches are employed with different dominancy during the process of any Qualitative Content Analysis. Thus, authors suggest more expressive, comprehensive, yet simple labels for this method of qualitative data analysis.

Abstract Background Water-pipe smoking is the most common type of tobacco used among Iranian women. The aim of this study was to explain the women’s perceptions of their intention for quitting water-pipe smoking based on theory of planned behavior. Methods The study was a qualitative content analysis which was carried out over four months in 2016 in Tehran-Iran. The participants were 26 females of ages 18 to 45-years-old who smoked water-pipe and were selected through snowball sampling. The study was performed in hookah cafes, parks, and homes. The data were collected through individual interviews. Directed content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results Findings showed that the women did not intend to quit water-pipe in that time. The most important perceived factors of having no intention for cessation were; positive attitude toward hookah smoking, false beliefs, social pressure, and low motivation to comply. Although, the females felt some internal and external obstacles for cessation, they claimed a high self-efficacy to overcome the barriers. Conclusion Theory of planned behavior provided a useful framework to explain the women’s intention for quitting water-pipe smoking. Therefore, theory-based interventions should be designed and implemented to identify factors associated with having no intention for water-pipe cessation and modify these factors by applying appropriate techniques.

Objective: Religious coping is one of the most frequently used coping methods in parents of children with cancer. This study aims to explain dimensions of religious coping in mothers of children with cancer in Iran. Methods: In this qualitative content analysis, using purposeful sampling, 8 mothers of children with cancer were selected and interviewed. When saturation was achieved, data were analyzed through directed content analysis. Primary and secondary codes were placed in prelabeled categories and subcategories based on Pargament’s religious coping theory. Results: The participants of the study used coping methods in 4 of the 5 objectives of religious coping, that are meaning, control, comfort, and intimacy with others and closeness to God. Three of the most frequent used coping methods by the participants were “Punishing God Reappraisal,” “Pleading for Direct Intercession,” and “Benevolent Religious Reappraisal,” respectively. None of the participants used religious coping methods for its function of “life transformation.” Conclusions: As suggested by Pargament’s theory of religious coping, the dynamic, multidimensional process of religious coping has a culture-based pattern with unpredictable outcomes. Despite many similarities between religious coping in a Shia Muslim society and other studied ones, some differences are observed. Further studies are needed to show the potential evidence of the concept in relation to cultural diversity and religious differences.
