Abstract: This paper aims to provide an overview how to employ marine mammals in naval operations and also to identify possibilities of involving mammals in support of the Romanian Naval Forces. The article uses domain observation and comparative analysis of how to employ marine mammals in the actions of modern fleets. For this purpose, we set out to identify the possibilities of using mammals for military scopes. Also, we will provide historical aspects of involving mammals in military activities in the Black Sea. In addition, we will offer relevant implications and perspectives regarding the use of marine mammals by the Romanian Naval Forces. The novelty of this article comes from the motivation to bring to the attention of Romanian Naval Forces the approach of employing mammals and developing research in the underwater domain based on training marine mammals. The present article is addressed especially to the master students and the personnel of the Naval Forces, and also to those who contribute to the implementation of feasible ideas at the level of the Romanian Naval Forces and intend to develop the underwater domain in order to discourage actions of a potential adversary

The name Flexopecten glaber ponticus (Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus, 1889) is generally used for the only Pectinidae representative inhabiting the Black Sea. It is registered in the Red Book of the Republic of Crimea as endemic subspecies reducing in amount. F. glaber ponticus is listed in WoRMS MolluscaBase as the only accepted subspecies of Flexopecten glaber (Linnaeus, 1758). In the past its taxonomic status has been changed from a geographic variety to valid species. The purpose of this study is to establish its correct taxonomic status. The study is based on a comparative analysis of conchological features of Flexopecten glaber and F. glaber ponticus in relation with the brief natural history of population in the Black Sea. Sampling was performed by snorkel equipment in Kazach’ya Bay (Black Sea, Crimea, Sevastopol) at 2–6 m depths. A total of 100 scallop specimens were sampled in September 2017. To assure a better understanding in a broader context those results are compared with the previously published morphological data based on the analysis of a large amount of material from the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea – Marmara Sea regions. Comparative analysis of conchological features of F. glaber ponticus from the Black Sea with F. glaber from the Mediterranean region has not revealed any distinct differences between them. Thus, there are no evidenced data for the diagnosis of F. glaber ponticus as a subspecies. Species F. glaber appeared in the Black Sea not earlier than 7,000 years ago and formed a well developed population less than 3,000 years ago. We have to conclude that the specified divergence period is not long enough to form a subspecies. As a result of the present survey the subspecific status of F. glaber ponticus is not retained and the name is placed in synonymy of the parent species Flexopecten glaber.

Abstract The paper proposes an analysis of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) features that enable them to support naval operations in general, but the focus drawn to the Black Sea basin peculiarities in particular. In the introductory part, the authors succinctly present the Black Sea basin’s physical and strategic characteristics. Then, follows a description of UAVs features and potential missions conducted by these types of robots. In the next section, the article presents the uninhabited aerial vehicle classification and system components. The last chapter analyses the efficiencies and vulnerabilities of these vehicles. The closing section gives some short conclusions regarding the suitability of using such assets to support naval operations and a few further research directions..

A comparative analysis about the accumulation of heavy metal, natural and technogenic radionuclides from the Black Sea environment in different Bulgarian coastline regions is made. The possibilities to use Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta algae phylums as bioindicators in marine environment are investigated. Environmental contamination in the Black Sea alga species (green and red) was studied from 1992 to 2003. Sampling sites were selected to cover the whole coastal region. Low level gamma spectrometry was used to determine the natural and technogenic nuclide concentrations. The heavy metal concentrations were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The obtained data show that radionuclide and metal concentrations depend on the macrophyte type. Tendencies in the concentration of pollutant variations during the studied period are examined and all data give information about different macrophytic species' ability to accumulate certain elements from one and the same sampling location. All obtained results show that use of macroalgae in marine environmental monitoring reduces the need for complex studies on chemical speciation of aquatic contaminants and makes algae valuable indicators for seawater quality assessment. All data show the lack of serious pollution along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Private letters written on lead sheets in antiquity are rare, but not unknown; the publication of a new example found on the island of Berezan near Olbia in the Black Sea is remarkable as offering an early specimen of the Ionic dialect. Its Russian editor admitted that all its problems had not been solved, and the present article is an attempt to improve the readings and offer some suggestions for a better interpretation.The document is completely preserved and legible without difficulty; it was found rolled up with the address written on the reverse. As Vinogradov suggests, it seems likely that it never reached its addressee. Vinogradov puts its date as the second half of the sixth century B.C. Dr L. H. Jeffery has kindly confirmed that on grounds of letter-forms the date would appear to be not far from 500 B.C.

To make a reliable forecast for the level of dust, many external factors such as the wind energy and the soil content in the moisture must be considered. The numerical prediction of the Black sea region’s content of dust is the focus of this study, and for this purpose, the WRF-Chem model is used. The investigation is based on the statistics of the prediction coincidence and the actual result extracted from the data of the backward trajectories of AERONET and aerosol stratification maps in the atmosphere constructed with the help of the CALIPSO satellite. A comprehensive set of data was collected, and a comparative analysis of the results was carried out using machine learning techniques. The investigation identified 89% hits in the prediction of dust events, which is a very satisfactory result.
