Background and aim: There is an increased understanding of and appreciation for teachers' work from other disciplines, primarily for formulating individual plans and enhancing one's teaching based on observations and shared reflections. This article reviews how reflective practice, which is self-initiated and focused, informs the understanding and improvement of teaching practices, demonstrates interaction with students, and guides teaching experiences. This article aims to explore reflective practices that were meaningful for engaging in in-class instructional teaching practices.Methods: A self-study methodology was used to examine the complicated relationship between teaching and learning and knowledge in action of teacher education pedagogy.Results and discussion: As teacher, we understand the importance of problem-solving, establishing connections between relationships, and motivating students to think about missing connections or reconsidering them. Implications: The benefit of the Teaching Triangle was enhancing interdisciplinary relationships, understanding professional teaching relationships, and learning from each other without boundaries.Conclusions: Three aspects of the interdisciplinary reflective practice that emerged were adopting philosophy and purpose-driven goals; facilitating teaching pedagogy and technology; and creating culturally safe and effective student learning environments.

The Teaching Inquiry Group (TIG) is a team of six faculty members from STEM disciplines who are conducting research about their teaching. The group met through AY 15-16, and was mentored by an expert in self-study methodology from the Graduate School of Education. TIG meetings have focused on the self-study of interactive teaching including, self-study as a research method, developing a topic for self-study, self-study research questions, and identifying “critical friends groups”. The group facilitates critical reflection by maintaining an open dialogue; this enables them to think about teaching in ways that go beyond the subject area. The end-goal of the group is to improve their professional development on teaching and learning, not only for themselves, but also for the students they teach. Dissemination includes group and individual presentations at conferences, followed by write ups of the studies and publication in their respective educational research journals The session will include an overview of the process and then the six faculty group members will describe parts of the process that affected them greatly. Discipline fields included astronomy, bioengineering, biology, geology, information sciences and technology, and mathematics.  At the end of the session, participants will be aware of the importance of taking time to reflect, reframe and respond to their practice, and foster genuine educational change for themselves and their students.

There is a growing trend of learning through making in P-16 education in both formal and informal learning environments. In the informal learning environments, who provides support and mentorship for learning through making? In this chapter, the authors report on a maker mentor pilot project using a self-study methodology. This initiative was designed to develop knowledge and skills using a mentoring approach to support learning through making with pre-service and in-service teachers, and to model reflective practice. Using a reflective process, they share insights into the work of maker mentors, what worked well, as well as recommendations to enhance this mentoring initiative. They conclude with three implications for practice in support of the role of maker mentors.

This paper provides an insight into the trajectory of coach learning over two seasons through a shared reflective process. It describes how a collaborative process in a volunteer, amateur coach setting was supported and sustained. The coach-researchers had coached a university sports team together for two years prior to formalising the collaborative process. They adopted a collaborative self-study methodology to support and structure their reflective practice and learning throughout the study. Weekly individual and collaborative reflections were written by both coaches. They engaged with a critical friend to offer alternative perspectives on their reflections, and they planned their coaching strategies together. This paper illustrates the collaborative reflective process that supported the trajectory of the novice coach learning. This journey is represented using Fuller’s concern based model to map concern for self, concern for the task and concern for the learners. The reflective process and learning trajectory are outlined to exemplify the value of informal collaborative reflection to support coach learning. Implications are outlined for shared reflective practice to enhance learning opportunities for other coaching partners and small groups or in other educational domains.

This article reviews literature on the use of virtual learning environments by highlighting their potential and the challenges of introducing the same in Tanzania. It introduces the concept of virtual learning environments by demonstrating their applications to support teaching and learning. The article discusses the use of virtual learning environments in teaching information literacy courses by highlighting the success of using such tools in facilitating the teaching of information literacy courses to library users. In this review, special emphasis is placed on attempts by Tanzanian institutions of higher learning to introduce web-based teaching of information literacy and the challenges faced. The review reveals the need for Tanzanian institutions of higher learning to develop virtual learning environments to facilitate the teaching of information literacy courses to students and faculty so as to reach many of those who may not manage to attend the face-to-face information literacy sessions that are offered by librarians on a regular basis.

Observations are widely used in research and evaluation to characterize teaching and learning activities. Because conducting observations is typically resource intensive, it is important that inferences from observation data are made confidently. While attention focuses on interrater reliability, the reliability of a single-class measure over the course of a semester receives less attention. We examined the use and limitations of observation for evaluating teaching practices, and how many observations are needed during a typical course to make confident inferences about teaching practices. We conducted two studies based on generalizability theory to calculate reliabilities given class-to-class variation in teaching over a semester. Eleven observations of class periods over the length of a semester were needed to achieve a reliable measure, many more than the one to four class periods typically observed in the literature. Findings suggest practitioners may need to devote more resources than anticipated to achieve reliable measures and comparisons.

This essay articulates two distinct sources for the set of teaching practices that have come to be called “feminist pedagogy.” The separate contributions of liberation pedagogy and of feminist theories of women's development are described. It is argued that neither approach taken by itself is adequate to produce a feminist pedagogy that fully challenges the androcentric universals of conventional teaching practices. By synthesizing the two approaches, however, feminist pedagogy can be developed in a way that will have a strong influence on contemporary education.

Abstract: As the time in which online teaching and learning was still an element of novelty has long been gone, virtual learning environments have to be studied thoroughly so that they will provide students not only with the necessary knowledge, but also with the proper tools to meet their learning objectives. The advancement in information technology and the access to an almost inordinate number of learning and teaching tools should have already been fructified and, as a result, not only teachers, but also learners should have already picked up the fruit of knowledge grown in the vast virtual environment of the Internet. However, as education has recently moved almost entirely online, some questions have arisen. Are the Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) enough to offer ESL students both motivation and knowledge? Will foreign languages benefit from this growing trend or will traditional, face-to-face interaction, prove to have been more efficient? The present article will look into some of these questions and into the benefits of VLEs in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning process has been the subject of extensive research in the past few decades. Many studies have discussed the benefits of ICT for teachers and learners. However, little is known about the main factors that influence teachers’ attitudes toward the use of ICT in their teaching practices. This study aimed to explore the attitudes of secondary school EFL teachers in the Western District of Chlef toward ICT use in Algeria. Additionally, the study attempted to investigate the relationship between teachers’ computer attitudes and five independent variables: personal characteristics, computer attributes, cultural perceptions, computer competence, and computer access. Mixed methods research was used to combine both quantitative and qualitative research methods. A questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used in order to collect the data. Both descriptive and inferential statistics as well as content analysis were conducted to analyse the data. The findings indicated that EFL teachers held positive attitudes toward ICT in education. There were statistically significant positive correlations between teachers’ attitudes toward ICT and the five aforementioned independent variables. It was also found that age and academic qualification had negatively correlated with attitudes. The results of this study give meaningful insights for educational practitioners and policy-makers in relation to the implementation of ICT for teaching and learning in the classroom. Finally, the study presented some implications for policy and practice and recommendations for further research that will enhance teachers’ use of ICT in their teaching practices.

The course “Interdisciplinary Aspects in Science and Engineering Education” is a unique course designed to expose students of science and engineering education to the characteristics of interdisciplinary teaching and learning. The theoretical part of the course deals with the nature of science and engineering and the interaction between the two, various hierarchies describing the level of integration between disciplines, and possible strategies for developing interdisciplinary lessons. In the practical section, the participants develop, in heterogeneous teams of students from different academic backgrounds, an interdisciplinary lesson integrating science and engineering, and teach it to their peers. Using qualitative tools, the research described in this paper characterized the attitudes of 112 students towards developing an interdisciplinary lesson as part of a team. The findings indicate that the students identified both the difficulties involved in developing an interdisciplinary lesson as part of a team and the advantages inherent to teamwork. It was further found that the weight of the attitude component that recognized the contribution of teamwork to the development of interdisciplinary lessons was considerably higher than the weight of the component indicating the difficulties that involved teamwork.
