The present review aims to synthesize the theory of recognition developed by Axel Honneth in his work “The Struggle for Recognition: The Moral Grammar of Social Conflicts". His study contains three chapters that interconnect within the methodology used by Critical Theory. First, the author proposes a historical presentification, indicating Hegel's original idea. Subsequently, Honneth updates the structure of social relations of recognition proposed by Hegel; and concludes, pointing out the perspectives of social philosophy, by indicating the aspects of morality and the evolution of society.

This article focuses on multiculturalism in the context of present-day societies and the need to incorporate minorities within a reframed social order. In his critical theory, Axel Honneth rightly draws attention to the idea of the moral grammar of struggles for recognition.  Analyzing his theory in depth, the article shows that Honneth underestimates the violent power of ideological discourse in marginalizing and excluding society’s others, e.g. cultural minorities. It then puts forward an alternative approach based on Ricœur’s creative and original reflections on ideology and utopia. For the incorporation of cultural minorities to occur, the symbolic order of society needs to be critiqued, transformed and expanded. From this perspective, the author highlights the subversive and transformative strength of utopian counter-narratives. The latter form a vital resource for cultural minorities in their struggle for recognition.

One of the strong theses defended by Axel Honneth's theory is to show that the motivation of the struggles for recognition arises from everyday experiences of denial of recognition, closely linking forms of moral disrespect with the production of social conflicts. I intend to present initially what I understand as the main contribution of Axel Honneth, namely, the attempt to link the place of subjects’ daily negative experiences with the grammar of social conflicts. Next, I expose some critics against the supposed psychological motivation of the struggles. Finally, I would like to propose that the reconstruction of negative experiences of disrespect should be linked to the studies of social movements. The political deficit of the concept of disrespect would be avoided if we could see how individuals engaged in social movements articulate their previous experiences to the motivation of the struggle for recognition.

AbstractAxel Honneth frames his contribution to the tradition of critical theory as an attempt to do justice to both the structures of social domination in contemporary Western societies and the practical resources for their overcoming. This paper assesses how well Honneth’s critical theory, which centers on the notion of the struggle for recognition, accomplishes the first of these two tasks. I argue that Honneth has yet to offer a fully satisfactory analysis of domination because his recognition model is unable to make sense of modes of subordination that function without producing any struggle.

Axel Honneth has suggested that the task of social philosophy can be defined as the diagnosisand therapy of social pathologies. He has developed that view in various writings (Honneth2007, 2009, 2014a, 2014b; cf. Zurn 2011; Freyenhagen 2015). In these different writings, he has in fact defended different conceptions of social pathology, as we try to show elsewhere(cf. Särkelä & Laitinen, ms). In so doing he has nonetheless brought the notion of social pathology to the centre of interest for researchers interested in Frankfurt School Critical Theory or the philosophy of social criticism more generally. In this short paper, we suggest some central questions for analysing and comparing conceptions of social pathology, which could be thought to be useful for social philosophy, especially for the tradition of Frankfurt School Critical Theory. Rival conceptions of socialpathology will give rival answers to these questions and the conceptions can be classifiedand compared with the help of these answers. Of course, any two conceptions can be compared in any of the details that either of them have, but our aim here is to map some of the central issues as stake in the philosophical discourse on social pathology. We discuss and compare in more detail four conceptions of social pathology with the help of these questions in Laitinen & Särkelä (2018) and in Honneth’s work in particular in Särkelä and Laitinen (2018). The questions we present in this paper are intended less as an a priori foranalysing conception of social pathology, than a potentially helpful a posteriori reflectionof the kind of questions one is confronted with when inquiring into the debate on social pathology. ’Pathology’ can mean both the science studying diseases and the object of inquiry, the disease itself. Unless otherwise indicated (as in subsection 7), we refer to the diseases themselves with ‘pathology’.

Patologia Social. The implications of covid-19 to “Social” life: political crisis and social-institutional derangementABSTRACT The epidemiological crisis from covid-19 demonstrated the inefficiency of a governmental plan on public health in Brazil; moreover, it brought with it a corollary which refer to an unprecedented social crisis. In front of pandemic scenario of covid-19 and taking into account the theoretical-methodological assumptions of critical theory and social philosophy, I want to make explain in this research that this social crisis can’t be debited just because of covid-19, but to the social derangement which it highlighted. From my the point of view this social crisis derive from the not-effectuation of the “Social” sphere basically understood by social relations, institutions and practices (1). As of this issue, I will take as reference a dual categorical framework: (2) the crisis in social practices and relations through a weakened understanding with regard to ideology (political framework) and the institutional crisis between the public powers in our Republic State (3). Keywords: Social Philosophy. Critical Theory. Covid-19. Social Pathology.
