The concept of interdisciplinarity has a long history but interpretations of this term and the importance of interdisciplinarity in research and education have varied over time. This chapter traces the theoretical understanding and historical development of interdisciplinarity to provide background and context for the book. First it examines the ways in which interdisciplinarity and similar phenomena have been conceptualized in the literature. A roughly chronological account of the main theoretical and empirical developments in interdisciplinarity is then set out, divided into three main periods dating from the early 20th century to the present day.

The paper deals with the historical development of local self-government in the context of the development of the public administration as a whole during the First Czechoslovak Republic. It presents historical roots of the public administration in the former imperial Austria-Hungary, which was different from other European countries with its complex bureaucratic structures. Certain elements of the complex political and administrative developments during the early 20th century can be seen even one hundred years later. It is becoming apparent that history repeats itself in a number of issues and that it is unforgivable not to learn lessons both from the mistakes and the successful solutions of the past.

On examining the historical development of astrophysical science at the bottom of the world from the early 20th century until today we find three temporally overlapping eras of which each has a rather distinct beginning. These are the eras of Astrogeology, High Energy Astrophysics and Photon Astronomy.

The article traces the historical stages of the emergence and development of modern choreography, its main directions, the influence of outstanding choreographers on the development of the plastic language of modern dance. It is noted that modern dance and its many and varied styles, types, forms arouse interest and the most controversial reactions from both the viewer and the critic. The concept of "modern choreography" was used and was relevant at every stage of the historical development of dance. In this or that historical period, dance was considered innovative and in line with the spirit of its time. Particular attention is paid to modern dance in the article. It incorporated both the aesthetic principles of the early 20th century and the further transformation of the modern dance of the second half of the 20th - early 21st centuries. The work also explores the emergence of the theory of movement, which appeared at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries. However, despite the absence of a system of choreographic structure, tools for its analysis have already been proposed. This dance did not have a specific form and was aimed at conveying a person's spiritual state. In parallel with the birth of modern dance, new views on its perspectives were framed. The innovators sought to minimize the importance of costume, music, and decoration while maximizing lexical material and depth of thought, which rejected any canons of dance composition. It marked the beginning of a new era - the postmodern era, in which modern choreography evolves, moves in search of new forms and means of expression, changes, creating a new vocabulary, artistic symbols, and understandable signs.

In this paper we investigate the process of the creation and embodiment of the concept of Serbian folk church chant throughout the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century among Serbian intellectuals and scholars. In order to indicate its main dimensions we focused on church music narratives of that time. Due to a detailed analysis of discussions and writings in periodicals as well as the published chant collections themselves, we were able to assess the dominant interpretations of the historical development of church singing in the Serbian Orthodox church. Looking closely at suppositions made about the origins and formation of church chants through the history of the Serbian church we could unveil their character e.g. whether they were the result of previously done research or were just a product of speculative thinking. In addition, we formed assumptions on the embeddedness of the concept of Serbian folk church chant in influential narratives on national identity and culture developed among the Serbian political and intellectual elite. The aim of our investigation was to show that the concept of Serbian folk church chant was not only determined by socio-political strivings in the Serbian state but that it was also a product of the wider political and cultural goals of the Serbian elite. Finally, we sought to suggest the important role played by 19th and early 20th century Serbian church music scholars in the process of imagining the Serbian nation.

AbstractWe examine the historical development of astrophysical science in Antarctica from the early 20th century until today. We find three temporally overlapping eras, each having a rather distinct beginning. These are the astrogeological era of meteorite discovery, the high energy era of particle detectors, and the photon astronomy era of microwave, submillimetre, and infrared telescopes, sidelined by a few niche experiments at optical wavelengths. The favourable atmospheric and geophysical conditions are briefly examined, followed by an account of the major experiments and a summary of their results.

Studies of the historical development of construction and applied building materials have so far mainly focused on the most important architectural and engineering achievements that had a major impact on further developments. This paper focuses on the development of structures and building materials in a region that has not been the subject of previous researches, as the buildings studied belong to the narrow geographical area of northern Vojvodina during the period when it was part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. The research includes a detailed analysis of the preserved archival material, review of the literature, as well as analysis and research on individual buildings during restoration works. The results shown in the paper reveal the appearance of exceptional design solutions for individual structures and architectural achievements in the seemingly uninteresting and stalled provincial environment.
