With the continuous reform of subject education in colleges and universities and the deepening development of University-enterprise cooperation, deep University-enterprise cooperation has new characteristics. However, the policy and management mechanism of University-enterprise cooperation is not perfect. The realistic obstacles of the University-enterprise teacher community and the integration mode of University-enterprise resources become the critical issues in the in-depth cooperation. This paper analyzes the main problems existing in the deep cooperation between universities and enterprises. It proposes solutions to the problems encountered in the cooperation, such as educational ideas, policies and regulations, and resource integration.

This chapter advances the argument that the Catholic social tradition, which includes the work of feminist theologians and ethicists, can point toward greater equity for women in the academy. This chapter also discusses the continuing need to create more inclusive campus communities for LGBTQ persons. The author contends that the issues that women face because of their gender and the LGBTQ community's ongoing struggle for equality are not the same and warrant more extensive treatment than can be offered in this book. However, the chapter aims to offer some insights about how CST can promote the dignity, equality, and full participation of women and LGBTQ persons in Catholic higher education. Ways in which Catholic colleges and universities have promoted equity and full participation of women and LGBTQ persons on their campuses are considered. The concluding section confronts the problem of sexual violence in campus, which the author contends is a severe affront to a person’s autonomy and right to fully participate in a community.

AbstractRecurrent debates about the church and higher education in the United States involve differing understandings of the nature and purpose of the church as well as differing understandings of the university. Catholic colleges and universities remain important but underutilized resources for the American church as it pursues its mission. Institutional, communitarian and servant models of the church must be examined more rigorously before they are used to prescribe changes in higher education. None is without problems. In a pluralistic and free society, a public church,” self-consciously mediating the tensions between Christian integrity, Catholic unity, and civic responsibility, provides an altogether appropriate stance for Catholic colleges and universities as well. It points not to a neat resolution of outstanding difficulties but to ongoing dialogue among the publics to which both church and higher education must address themselves.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine established leadership paradigms in the context of institutions of higher education. The old ways of running a college, which might have worked several decades ago, no longer work in the age of flux characterized by super-fast breakthroughs due to technology and the internet. Organizational change is especially difficult in academe where many faculty are tenured and satisfied with the status quo. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines and synthesizes the relevant literature in leadership and higher education administration, focusing on critical issues and recommendations to ensure the long-term viability and relevance of colleges and universities. It also describes meaningful metrics that should be monitored by university leaders to strengthen their institutions. Findings Some of the findings are as follows: the old ways of running an institution of higher learning need to be overhauled; colleges and universities need leaders who can transform their institutions into learning organizations where knowledge is shared; and leaders must have the ability to tap into their organization’s intellectual capital and creativity. In addition, several new metrics are needed for evaluating the leadership of a college of university, including vision, employee engagement, student satisfaction and image/reputation. Originality/value This study provides an original approach to reform colleges and universities and enable them to thrive in the age of chaos and disruption.

This chapter discusses the rising ethos of affluence in higher education, which had profound implications for colleges and universities. Whereas earlier in the century, commercialism had led a growing number of Americans to value higher education as a means by which to achieve professional success, many people now concluded that a university degree was a ticket to the good life. In addition to demonstrating the effects of a social ethos of affluence on students' approaches to higher education, the history of the University of South Florida illustrates how colleges and universities similarly prioritized acquiring wealth during the second half of the twentieth century. Although established as a low-cost institution dedicated to undergraduate instruction, the University of South Florida eventually sought to become an affluent “multiversity” by pursuing lucrative research contracts, establishing technology transfer and patent and licensing offices, and raising revenue by increasing the cost of undergraduate education, all in an effort to generate financial resources and elevate institutional prestige.

Furthering intercultural competence in higher education requires colleges and universities to establish an intentional, mission driven strategic plan that embeds intercultural understanding and practice across the institution’s work. To secure broad-based buy-in and support, this plan needs to consider the various ways that different units within the academy define, interpret, and view intercultural work. For large, complex and multi-faceted colleges and universities, building this plan can prove daunting as different parts of the institution will ascribe different meanings, purposes, and intentions to intercultural advancement. In this paper, administrators from the University of Minnesota, who represent units that are highly engaged in intercultural competence work, share some of their struggles and lessons learned in their effort to build a comprehensive, campus-wide strategy to grow intercultural advancement. The administrators initiated this campus-wide strategic work following their participation in an international conference focused on intercultural competence. Since that time, they have developed recommendations for the foundational work required to establish a common university-wide framework and comprehensive plan for institutional intercultural advancement.

This study aimed to articulate the critical issues related to talent management (TM). A critical literature review was performed to discuss the significance of TM in universities and its role in aligning higher education with industrial labour requirements. Relevant literature was obtained from an extensive search of human resource journals indexed with Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, EBSCO Information Services, ProQuest, and Emerald Insight databases. The findings revealed that TM supported the competitiveness and learning outcomes in the education sector. Furthermore, this study forwarded a novel conceptual framework for integrating higher education with industrial human capital needs. Based on the results, it is recommended that the integration of TM systems in universities and organisations can ensure the university graduates address the industry needs. Therefore, collaborative planning for talent supply management models in universities and industries is vital for developing academic TM systems that align with the extensive national economic, political, and social systems.

Transfer has a long history that parallels the evolution of community colleges in the United States. Research on transfer has focused extensively on policies and processes that operate under the auspices of these institutions, with somewhat less emphasis on universities acting as transfer partners. This issue is important for the success of all students but especially students who are historically underserved by higher education. This article reviews four articles that focus on the most critical issues facing transfer today. Highlighting the importance of addressing diverse learners’ needs, state and local policies and processes that influence transfer and articulation implementation, and the roles of community colleges and universities operating as part of systems and also in tandum with one another is central the research appearing in this issue, including findings that are important for other researchers to consider to guide their work in the future.

International students and scholars in the United States: Coming from abroad is a well-written, well-researched, and well-timed monograph. In pursuit of higher education, international students have continued to attend colleges and universities in the United States of America in spite of the educational, emotional, and cultural issues. According to the Institute of International Education (IIE), 723, 277 international students and more than 115,000 international scholars matriculated in American colleges and universities in 2010/2011 (pp. 4-9). The editors, Heike Alberts and Helen Hazen, have not only provided readers with an opportunity to learn about international students and scholars from Asia, Africa, and Europe but have also addressed critical issues faced by the international students and scholars in the United States.
