The present field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Farm of RBS College, Bichpuri Agra, during Rabi season of 2018-19. The soil of the experimental site is Gangetic alluvial. The experimental was laid out in RBD factorial having 3 main treatment (N level) and 4 sub treatments (P2O5 level) with 3 replications. All growth and yield attributing character increase with application of N @ 120 Kg-1 and P2O5 @ 60 kg-1. All the yield components i.e., number of siliquae plant-1, length of siliqua and number of seeds siliqua-1 improved with the increase in the level of nitrogen. Higher value of harvest index was associated with the application of 60 kg P2O5 ha-1. Seed yield increased appreciably with every additional increase in the level of nitrogen. Respectively 26.85 and 40.05 per cent higher seed yield ha-1 was obtained with the application of 80 and 120 kg ha-1 nitrogen as compared to 40 kg ha-1 .

The growth and yield characters of chickpea varieties suitable for mechanical harvesting were evaluated through field experiment conducted for three consecutive years (2016__17 to 2018__19) during rabi season on vertisols under rainfed conditions at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh. The investigation was carried out in split plot design with three replications. Two plant geometries (30.0 × 10.0 cm and 22.5 × 10.0 cm) were assigned to main plots and six chickpea varieties (viz., GBM 2, Dheera, CSJ 515, HC 5, Phule G 08108 and BRC 1) were assigned to sub plots. Pooled analysis of experimental results indicated that significantly higher number of branches per plant (8.7) and number of pods per plant (31.1) and test weight (24.3 g) were observed under 30.0 × 10.0 cm when compared to 22.5 × 10.0 cm. Higher plant height (44.8 cm), height of lowest pod bearing branch (30.0 cm), lower days to 50 % flowering (42.1 days) and higher test weight (31.2 g) were observed in Dheera. Higher number of branches per plant (9.2) and number of pods per plant (34.2) were observed in GBM 2. Higher seed yield was observed in Phule G 08108 (1708 kg ha-1) which is followed by GBM 2 (1675 kg ha-1) Dheera (1569 kg ha-1) and BRC 1 (1493 kg ha-1). Higher harvest index (56.4%) was also observed in Phule G 08108. Chickpea varieties GBM2, Dheera and BRC1 were best suitable for mechanical harvesting and higher seed yield due to their excellent morphology.

The plant spacing of 20, 25 and 30 cm were used for the study. The doses of nitrogen and phosphorus were 80, 100, 120 and 45, 60, 75 kg/hectare respectively. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications. 20 cm plant spacing produced the highest plot yield. Maximum number of seeds per head and yield were produced by the application of 120 kg N + 75 kg P2O5 per hectare. In case of plant spacing x fertilizer interaction effect, 20 cm plant spacing with 120 kg N + 75 kg P2O5 per hectare treatment produced the highest head diameter and seed yield. Bangladesh J. Sci. The present research was conducted at the experimental field of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna during Rabi season 2016-17 to investigate the growth and yield performance of mustard varieties. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design consisting of eight mustard varieties (viz. BARI Sarisha-8, BARI Sarisha-11, BARI Sarisha-13, BARI Sarisha-14, BARI Sarisha-15, BARI Sarisha-16, Rai and Tori-7) as treatment and replicated thrice. All the growth, yield attributes and yield were substantially influence among the mustard varieties except the phenological parameters. Results of the experiment showed that the highest plant height (131.33 cm), seed yield (1813.33 kg ha-1) and stover yield (3876.67 kg ha-1) were found in BARI Sarisha-16. BARI Sarisha-11 was found better in respect of maximum siliqua plant-1, weight of seeds plant-1, 1000-seed weight and harvest index. Besides this, BARI Sarisha-14 showed the maximum number of seeds siliqua-1. Therefore, findings of this study suggested that BARI Sarisha-16 would be suitable for better productivity and recommended for cultivation in the medium highland of Khulna region of Bangladesh.

Spring wheat, with fertilizer applied in the drill rows, was grown in wild-oat-infested stubble on a Shallow Lethbride loam soil for 4 years, Phosphorus had no measurable effect on the height, straw weight, seed yield, or number of wild-oat plants. In contrast, nitrogen increased the number of seed-bearing stems, plant height, straw weight, and seed yield, but did not change the wild-oat stand. Wheat yields were increased by nitrogen and further increased by the addition of phosphorus at the rate of 20 pounds of P2O5 per acre in 3 of the 4 years. Measured bushel weight of the wheat increased with nitrogen fertilizer additions and was further increased by phosphorus except at the high rate of both materials. Fertilizer applications, under conditions similar to those encountered in this test, may be useful for increasing wheat production, but only at the expense of producing increased quantities of wild-oat seed.

A pot experiment was carried out in the nethouse of Soil Science Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2014-2015 through 2015-2016. The design of the experiment was factorial randomized completely block design with 4 replications. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the potential of Arbuscular mycorrhization (AM) on the germination, yield and yield attributes of lentil treated with different concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl). Five NaCl treatments (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4%) possessed NaCl level as the first factor that were treated with soils before sowing of lentil seeds overriding or pivotal pulse crop in Bangladesh. The second factor consists of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal treatments. Mycorrhizal plants showed better performance in terms of germination %, yield and yield contributing characters than non-mycorrhizal plants. With increasing NaCl concentration germination %, yield and yield contributing characters in the rhizosphere soil, decreased significantly (p<0.01). Interaction effects of mycorrhizal inoculation and NaCl on germination %, growth and yield of lentil were appeared to be statistically non-significant. The highest germination (96.25% in 2014-2015 and 92.50% in 2015-2016), seed yield (6.45 g pot-1 in 2014-2015 and 5.89 g pot-1 in 2015-2016), and stover yield (9.55 g pot-1 in 2014-2015 and 8.58 g pot-1 in 2015-2016) was found in NaCl 0% + AM treatment. The lowest germination %, seed yield and stover yield was found in NaCl 4% treatment. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased seed yield on an average by 31.85% during 2014-2015 and 63.71% during 2015-2016, and increased stover yield on an average by 48.56% during 2014-2015 and 63.55% during 2015-2016 over non-mycorrhizal inoculation. Therefore, it can be concluded that mycorrhizal inoculation increases germination %, growth and yield of lentil over non-mycorrhizal inoculation. The Agriculturists 2017; 15(1) 156-169

An experiment was carried-out with forty-eight hybrids of pigeonpea and two checks for nine characters at Agricultural Research Station, Tandur (Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University). Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the hybrids for all the nine characters studied. The results of genetic parameters revealed that, high genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic coefficients of variations (PCV) were observed for seed yield and number of pods per plant. Six characters viz., number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod length, test weight and seed yield exhibited high heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean which suggested that these traits were amenable for further improvement following simple selection methods. Character association revealed significant positive association of seed yield with plant height,number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and pod length. Based on divergence studies, the hybrids were grouped into nine clusters in Tocher’s method, cluster II (14 hybrids) was the largest followed by cluster I (13), cluster VI (9), cluster IV (6), cluster IX (4) and the remaining clusters were solitary (III, V, VII and VIII). Out of the nine characters studied, seed yield, days to 50% flowering, test weight and plant height contributed 85.62 per cent of the total divergence and these traits were found to be important factors for genetic differentiation in the hybrids. The overall results of the study revealed that, hybrids under cluster IV and VIII and cluster VII and VIII had maximum and minimum inter cluster distances respectively and possessing high genetic diversity for the characters viz. plant height, number of branches per plant, number of seeds per pod and yield.

The production of doubled haploid (DH) lines of Brassica rapa could be an efficient procedure for the development of inbred parents for hybrid production. A total of 162 B. rapa DH lines were evaluated in field tests at Saskatoon, Canada, in single row, replicated tests and 10 DH lines were tested in four-row plot, multilocation, replicated tests. Seed of DH lines was produced by bud selfing in the greenhouse. Approximately one-fifth of all DH lines tested were chlorophyll deficient, presumably due to the expression of recessive alleles. Inbreeding depression was evident in low seed and biological yields, low number of seeds per pod and delayed flowering. Seed yield of DH lines was positively associated with the number of seeds per pod, early flowering and a long pod-filling period. One DH line was equal in yield to its donor population (DP), suggesting that dominance deviation was the genetic basis for high seed yield in this species. The consistent performance of DH lines over years and locations indicated that DH lines may be selected after 1 year of evaluation for combining ability testing. Higher yielding DH lines of B. rapa must be selected before they can be used as parents for hybrid development. Key words: Brassica rapa, doubled haploid, field evaluation

A study on comparative productive efficiency and feasibility of lentil varieties both at relay and minimum tillage were conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during the Rabi season of 2007-08 and 2008-09. Three lentil varieties viz. BARI Masur-2, BARI Masur-3 and BARI Masur-4 and two sowing methods viz. relay sowing and furrow sowing (Minimum tillage) were compared. The highest seed yield (1.59 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Masur-4 because of highest number of pods/plant and plant population/m2 while lowest from BARI Masur-2 (1.39 t/ha). The sowing methods had significant effect on the seed yield of lentil. Crops sown in furrows produced higher seed yield (1.60 t/ha) than that of crops in relay sowing. The interaction effect between varieties and sowing methods also had significant effect on the seed yield and yield attributes. The lentil variety BARI Masur-4 when grown in furrows gave the highest seed yield (1.70 t/ha). Though seed yield and gross return were highest in furrow sowing but highest benefit cost ratio (4.67) was found in relay sowing method.Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 40(2): 271-278 June 2015

In this study, a total of 50 halophilic bacterial isolates were screened for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase activity, of these six with the highest ACC deaminase activity were selected for an increase in chickpea yield under salinity. The ACC deaminase activity among the isolates was ranged between 0.12 and 3.56 mM α-KB mg−1 min−1. These six isolates and one reference strain from the Agricultural College, Raichur, were used in the microcosm experiment during the rabi season of 2018. After 60 days of sowing, decreased rhizosphere pH and electrical conductivity (EC) from 8.4 to 7.6 and 4.3 to 3.4 dS m−1, respectively, were reported in chickpea. Among the treatments, Bacillus safensis (B. safensis)-inoculated plants showed a higher number of flowers (71 flowers/plant), pods (49.3 pods/plant), branches (33.3 branches/plant), and enhanced fresh weight (17.2 g/plant) and dry weight (8.1 g/plant). They were corroborated by improved nitrogen and phosphorus absorption of 71.5 and 43.5%, respectively, in B. safensis-treated plants. Based on the microcosm experimental findings, three cultures improving biometric and yield attributes were chosen for the field investigation. The field study was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Ganagavathi, during Kharif 2019. The chickpea plants treated with the consortium [B. safensis, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Staphylococcus xylosus] increased the superoxide dismutase and catalase activity of plants by 258 and 196%, respectively. In addition, an increase in ascorbate peroxidase activity (0.41 μmol of ascorbate oxidized s−1 g−1 fresh weight) in the leaves and proline content was also recorded. The consortium (B. safensis, P. stutzeri, and S. xylosus) significantly increased nutrient uptake (N and P), the number of flowers, number of pods, and yield by 63.26, 39.03, 110, 59.96, and 17.56%, respectively, in chickpeas. Finally, inoculation with a mixture of three isolates is an effective method for increasing chickpea production under osmotic stress.
