The use of corpus-based findings in order to inform L2 teaching materials have been emphasized by many researchers owing to the fact that the studies of authentic texts have revealed some inconsistencies between the use of grammatical structures in corpora, and those found in language textbooks that are based purely on hunch. Therefore, by comparing a textbook corpus with the British National Corpus, this study attempts to shed light on the extent in which modal auxiliary verbs presented in the Malaysian prescribed textbooks are identical with those used by native speakers. The findings showed that there are discrepancies between English language textbooks and real language use. Findings from this study contribute to the improvement of pedagogical practices in the teaching of the modal system and provide a sense of familiarity with textbooks’ content thus assisting educators in identifying the particular strengths and weaknesses in textbooks already in use.

There is evidence to suggest that young children more readily absorb the subtle messages that are encoded in any type of text and talk, and what they take away from these texts contributes in helping them develop their own identity in relation to their role in society. In this paper, we examine the construction of ethnic identity in a selection of English language textbooks targeted at young Malaysian children in primary schools. Based on a content analysis of visual and verbal language in two Primary Three English language textbooks, we report on the encoded messages that are transmitted to young Malaysian children about their place in society. The findings reveal significant imbalances in the way characters of different ethnic backgrounds are represented. This imbalance is a cause for concern as the message conveyed to young Malaysian children could be potentially damaging. Keywords: textbook, ethnicity, identity construction

The study aimed at investigating the Islamic values basically (faith, worship, moral, and social) that could be implemented in the English language syllabuses of the first three grades in Jordan. The researcher revised those three syllabuses and found some fundamental Islamic values which affect the students’ behavior. “Words, phrases and sentences” are taken as original units for analysis and investigations. The subject of the study consisted of all the English language textbooks (Student’s Books and Activity Books) of the first three grades in Jordan. The sample of the study is the subject of the study itself, since the researcher analyzes all the English language books for the three primary grades in Jordan. The selected values are important in realization of goals and behaviors of learning, in general and in learning English as a foreign language, in particular. For values have the power of developing personality, which in turn, makes learning more effective and permanent. The findings of the study show that some fundamental Islamic values were implemented in these textbooks with some variation from one grade to another and some others are totally absent as shown in the Tables (1-5). Based on the findings of the study, the researcher attempts to figure out some remarkable suggestions and recommendations.

Abstract The paper entitled “Types of Yes-No Question Found in  the movie “500 Days of Summer” focuses on types of the English interrogative sentences especially yes-no question forms and their functions used in the movie 500 Days of Summer in 2009. The data were analyzed qualitatively in accordance with some relative theories. The theories used for this study are the theories of English yes-no questions taken from “Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language” by Quirk (1985) and “A Practical English Grammar” by Thomson A.J and A.V Martinet  (1986). Then the data were presented descriptively by explaning the process and the result of discussion.Based on the findings there are five forms of English yes-no questions found in the data belonging to the Major classes of questions. Those English yes-no questions found in the data were possitive yes-no questions, negative yes-no questions, declarative questions, tag questions, yes-no questions with modal auxiliaries. The data were analyzed and some functions of the interrogative sentence were found: (a) Asking for request;(b) Confirmation; (c) Offering; (d) Asking for information; (f) Asking for permission .Mostly yes-no questions found in the data are asking for information and confirmation. However, suggestion and greeting do not exist in the data.
