<p>Pain is one of the most common reasons that drives people to go to hospitals. It has been found that several factors affect the practices of pain management. In this regard, this study aimed at investigating the underlying determinants in terms of pain management practices. Based on reviewing the previous studies and the suggestions of the KAP model, it was hypothesized that the main elements of the KAP model (attitudes and knowledge) significantly predict the variation in the practices of nurses regarding pain management. A questionnaire comprising the KAP model’ s constructs , i.e. knowledge and attitude towards pain management , as well as pain management practices, was used to collect data from 266 registered nurses ( n=266) who are deemed competent in the management of patients’ pain in the Jordanian public hospitals. The two constructs, attitude and knowledge, which are the main determinants of the KAP model were found to independently predict nurses’ practices of managing patients’ pain. Knowledge of pain management was found to be the strongest predictor. Additionally, it was found that about 69% of the variance in pain management could be explained by the constructs of the KAP model. Therefore, it is recommended that the Jordanian hospitals and universities focus on nurses’ knowledge and attitude towards pain management in order to enhance their practices in the field of pain management.</p>

This study is a quantitative descriptive study, which was conducted with an aim to assess the knowledge on nonpharmacological methods of pain management among registered general nurses at Bindura Hospital. This is because most nurses focus more on pharmacological pain management than nonpharmacological therapies which are given less attention or accord. This study used a descriptive study design, which is a nonexperimental research design so as to obtain information about registered nurses knowledge on nonpharmacological pain management. A convenience sampling technique was utilised to select a sample of seventy-five participants. Data were collected by the researcher who distributed self-administered questionnaires to available registered nurses after obtaining informed consent at Bindura Provincial Hospital. The mean knowledge score for this study was 48.6% and was below a pass mark of 50% and far below 80% which is the minimal acceptable level of knowledge on the Nurses Knowledge and Attitude Scale. A minimum knowledge score of 16% was obtained from participants showing lack of knowledge on indications of nonpharmacological pain therapies and a maximum knowledge score of 97.3% was shown on knowledge on nonpharmacological techniques. The following conclusion was drawn from the research findings; the study showed that the nurses have poor knowledge regarding nonpharmacological pain management as indicated by mean knowledge score of 48.6%. The researcher therefore recommends that the nursing practice should take an initiative in ensuring that all practicing nurses practice the highest possible pain management nursing care and that opportunities should be made available for nurses to be educated in effective pain management utilising nonpharmacological therapies.

Background: Children’s nurses’ knowledge of pain affects their pain management practices. Even though poor knowledge and attitudes have been reported in several studies, most were carried out in developed settings. However, little has been reported on the management of paediatric pain by nurses in resource-limited settings such as in sub-Saharan Africa.Purpose: This study sought to assess the knowledge and perceptions of children’s nurses regarding paediatric pain in a Ghanaian context.Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was carried out among 65 nurses at eight hospitals at various levels of healthcare in Ghana. Over three months, participants’ demographic data and responses on the Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attitude Survey Regarding Pain (PNKAS) instrument were collected. Data were analyzed and presented using descriptive and inferential statistics.Results: Participants’ average (SD) knowledge and attitudes regarding paeditric pain was 36.7% (6.9%) and ranged from 21.4% to 57.1%. Pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes (PPKA) of the nurses differed based on working years in the children’s unit and the hospital type they worked in (p<0.05). Nevertheless, the type of hospital facility was the only independent predictor of their PPKA (R2=0.181, p<0.001).Conclusion: Children nurses in this setting generally had insufficient knowledge and attitudes on paediatric pain. They should be motivated to undertake self-directed learning and regular continuing professional education to update their knowledge, attitude and skills on evidence-based pediatric pain assessment and management.

Background. Pain management is a very important aspect of nursing care among postoperative patients. Deficit in the knowledge and bad attitude towards pain management among nurses remain a problem in Ghana. In order to manage pain better in the surgical wards, nurses should be well equipped with knowledge of pain assessment and management. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to determine nurse’s knowledge and attitude towards pain management among postoperative patients in surgical units in Ghana. Methodology. This study used the quantitative study approach with a descriptive cross-sectional study design. A sample of 211 nurses was recruited using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a questionnaire regarding postoperative pain management. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and the chi-squared test were used to analyze the data using SPSS version 16.0. Results. The mean age of the nurses was 29.77, with the youngest nurse being 23 years and oldest being 39 years. Majority (72.5%) of nurses had moderate knowledge, and 89.6% of the nurses had negative attitude towards pain management. There was no significant relationship between nurse’s knowledge and years of experience as a nurse (r = −0.03, p=0.64), as well as no significant relationship between knowledge and number of years working in the surgical ward (r = 0.06, p=0.36). Also, there was no significant relationship between nurses’ knowledge and nurses’ attitude (r = 0.06, p=0.36). Conclusion and recommendation. The level of knowledge and attitude towards postoperative management were generally inadequate among nurses. Therefore, there is the need to implement in-service training on pain management for nurses working in the surgical units frequently.

<p><b>Pain and fear of pain are major concerns for many hospitalised patients. Nurses need to understand this pain, and be able to assess and manage it effectively. Despite advances in knowledge and an increased amount of nursing research related to pain management, literature continues to identify that infants, children and adolescents continue to experience unrelieved pain post surgery. Contemporary literature suggests that nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards pain affects their pain management practices. Nurses in small regional hospitals often don’t have the support of paediatric pain specialists and therefore rely on their own knowledge, education and experience to manage the pain of the infants, children and adolescents in their care.</b></p> <p>This research explored the knowledge and attitudes towards paediatric post-operative pain, within the New Zealand context of small regional hospitals. It established how nurses working in these areas obtain and update their paediatric pain management knowledge, and what is it that influences their paediatric post-operative pain management practices. A questionnaire survey of registered nurses working in three small paediatric units (5 to 12 beds), in regional secondary service hospitals was undertaken. The questionnaire developed was based on the Paediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attitude Survey (PNKAS). The survey had a 79% (n=33) response rate. Findings corroborate many findings in previously published literature including that nurses do well in questions related to assessment. However pharmacological knowledge continues to be lacking. Results also indicated that while nurses have a good understanding about who is the best person to rate pain, this wasn’t carried through in the clinical scenarios provided. Education is clearly an important factor in improving the knowledge and attitudes needed in clinical practice.</p> <p>While this survey was somewhat limited, both in size and in that a clear correlation between the results and actual clinical practice could not be made, results are significant for the areas surveyed and for the development of pain education for nurses. Wider research into both pain education and clinical practice is needed. - II -Some of the first steps could be to survey the knowledge and attitude of those who instruct in undergraduate programs related to pain, and review what is being provided in the course programs, and then examine what is being offered within the clinical environments. Research, incorporating chart review and utilising open written questions and/or interviews, or group discussions would provide far more information on which to base recommendations for practice.</p>

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate nurses’ perception towards the current application of talent management practices in Malawian public hospitals. It further explores whether significant differences exist between the registered nurses’ perceptions of the current application of talent management practices based on their demographic factors.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a quantitative research approach, using a cross-sectional survey strategy. An adapted version of Human Capital Index (HCI) questionnaire with 45-items was administered amongst 947 registered nurses in four public hospitals. Eventually, 580 responses, representing 61.2 per cent were found to be acceptable for analysis. Stata version-16 software programme was used to analyse the data.FindingsFindings of the study demonstrated that talent management practices are currently poorly applied amongst the nurses. Substantial gaps existed between the current applications versus the importance of talent management practices. Significant differences exist between the nurses perceptions of talent management practices based on their marital status.Research limitations/implicationsThe study only focused on a single perspective (registered nurses) and a single area (Malawian public hospitals) – an issue that disregarded different views (e.g. doctors, hospital administrators, hospital directors and other hospital staff). Furthermore, the results of this study cannot be generalised to other public and private hospitals settings because the data were collected from central hospitals only.Practical implicationsPractically, this study highlights the problematic areas of talent management practices hence the need for effective talent management for nurses.Social implicationsThe study has huge social implications in that the results will inform best practices for public hospitals thereby improving welfare of the patients and society at large.Originality/valueThe study contributes to new knowledge on nurses’ perception towards the application of talent management practices within the Malawian health sector and presents a valid and reliable measure to assess their perception.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> The role of pain education is well established in improving knowledge and attitude towards the adherence to pain assessment and management.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> A brief pain education program was delivered to assess nurses' knowledge and attitude towards pain assessment and management. The "KASRP" scale was used at three phases; pre, post, and three months' follow-up phases. Subsequent eight months observation on using pain assessment sheets was also performed.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> One hundred and four nurses were assessed at the beginning, followed by 92 at the immediate post-test, and 70 at the follow-up. Although nurses scored lowest in having knowledge and attitudes prior to the program, a significant improvement was evident after delivering pain education. In addition, nurses' competency in pain assessment was maintained over the three months of assessment. Younger nurses with shorter clinical experience were found more reactive to the program than older nurses.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> A brief nurse-driven pain education has improved nurses' knowledge and attitude towards pain management.</p>

Abstract Background Nurses’ knowledge and attitude regarding the care of older people can have an impact on patient outcomes such as reduced length of hospital stays, reduced readmission rates, and increased patient and family satisfaction. However, evidence is scarce in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and associated factors towards the care of older people among nurses working at public hospitals in West Shoa Zone, Ethiopia. Methods Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted from April1–30, 2021 among 423 nurses who were working in adult care units. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The sample was selected using simple random sampling. The logistic regression analysis model was fitted and the Adjusted Odds Ratio at 95% confidence interval was used. P-values less than or equal to 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results A total of 411 nurses participated in the study with a 97.16% response rate. The mean age of the participants was 29.11 (SD ± 3.84) years. The study showed that 37.2% (95% CI: 33, 42%) of the participants had good knowledge and 45.7% (95% CI: 40.9, 50.6%) had a favorable attitude toward the care of older people. The significantly associated factors positively affected both the knowledge and the attitude of nurses. Age greater than 30 years (AOR:2.37, 95% CI: 1.18, 4.75), experience greater than 5 years (3.00: 1.21, 7.41), being BSc degree holder and above (3.57: 1.40, 9.09), lived with older people (2.14: 1.34, 3.42), and nurses working in adult intensive care unit (3.03: 1.03, 8.91) were significantly associated with knowledge. Likewise, being female (2.04: 1.33, 3.12), being BSc degree holder and above (2.77: 1.35, 5.65), lived with older people (1.59: 1.03, 2.44), and care for older people (1.63: 1.06, 2.53) were significantly associated with attitude. Conclusion In this study, less than half of the nurses had good knowledge and a favorable attitude towards the care of older people. Continuous professional development regarding the care of older people is important to enhance nurses’ knowledge and attitude.
