This study analyzed the drying efficiency of a prototype low temperature closed-cycle grain drying system. The main principle of this drying system was the heat pump system working as a dehumidifier. The main component of this drying equipment included a compressor, a condenser, twin evaporators, and a fan. Two drying studies (denoted as trial 1 and trial 2) were conducted to assess the overall drying performance of this low temperature drying system. To calculate the drying efficiency, the total energy consumption was divided by the amount of water removal for each trial; the drying efficiency was reported in the form of Btu/lb of water removal. We also tested corn seed germination to determine if this drying process had an effect on seed germination performance. The drying efficiency results for trial 1 and 2 were 1036 Btu/lb water removal and 869 Btu/lb water removal, respectively; compared to other on-farm drying methods this drying system had fairly high drying efficiency. The germination test results showed that this drying system had no adverse effect on germination performance.

Pot culture experiment and Petri dish bioassay were conducted to assess the allelopathic potential of Cyanthillium cinereum and Lantana camara on seed germination and seedling growth of Vigna unguiculata and Abelmoschus esculentus. Aqueous leaf and stem extracts of weed were used for treatment. The differential inhibitory effect was observed for two weed plants on two tested crops. The experimental results revealed that in case of pot culture experiment, lowest germination percentages (40.8±0.49%, 63.6±0.60% and 83±0.78%) were recorded in L. camara leaf extract treated set of A. esculentus and maximum decrease in seedling length (0.31±0.05 cm, 4.18±0.07 cm, 6.42±0.08 cm and 13.51±0.07 cm) was observed in stem extract treated a set of A. esculentus. L. camara stem and leaf extract induced a more negative effect on seedling length in both A. esculentus and V. unguiculata. For petridish bioassay experiment, lowest germination percentages (54.60±0.40%, 59.20±0.49%, 66.20±0.74% and 69.80±0.38%) were observed in L. camara leaf extract treated a set of A. esculentus. In V. unguiculata, lowest germination percentage (45.8±0.49%, 75.4±0. 40%, 84.4±0.25% and 89±0.32%) was observed in stem extract treated set. Maximum suppressive effect on seedling length was recorded for stem and leaf extract of C. cinereum of A. esculentus and leaf extract of L. camara and stem extract of C. cinereum of V. unguiculata.

High seed germination is an important criteria in the seed industry, so the discovery of new processing processing methods that can improve percentage germination will be of great benefit for seed producers as well as for farmers. Seed germination tests of two pepper varieties (Bozok and pinar) that were dried using common (sun, shade, greenhouse) and novel (oven, microwave, liyofilization) drying methods were experimented. Two types of solid medium were used, one which was a mixture of peat and perlite (M1) and the other that contained only vermiculite (M2), a paper wet test in petridish (M3) was also performed, but was not replicated. There were no difference between both medium but a difference in viability in both varieties, Bozok was found to be more viable. Sun drying gave the highest emmergence rate 80% and 60% respectively in M2 and M1 for Bozok. Novel drying methods had no positive effect on seed germination.

            The study was conducted to standardize the methodology of humid priming for improving the seed germination and vigour of okra seeds and to compare the efficacy of different enhancement techniques such as hydro priming, spin priming, seed coating and the combination of ‘humid priming + seed coating’ in improving the seed vigour characteristics of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.). In order to standardize the humid priming technique, okra seeds were subjected to humid priming for four different duration’s viz., 2, 4, 6 and 8 h, shade dried to original moisture content and subjected to evaluation of seed germination   under shade net conditions in raised beds. The results revealed that 4 h of humid priming was statistically significant to the rest of the durations, with respect seed germination and seedling growth. With respect to anatomical potential, the radicle length (3.39mm), cotyledon length (6.69mm) and cotyledon width (6.30mm), recorded by humid priming (4 h) was 62.2 %, 6.4 % and 2.6 % higher than control seeds. The second experiment conducted to compare the efficacy of hydro priming, spin priming, polymer coating and combination of humid priming + seed coating. The study revealed that seeds subjected to combination of humid priming (4 h) + seed coating (3g kg-1) recorded highest physiological potential in terms of germination percentage (87 %), seedling length (20.2 cm), dry matter production (421.3 mg), vigour index (1765), root volume (3.5 cm3) and root sheath (2.560 g) while the control recorded only 70 %, 15.1 cm, 328.7 mg, 1055, 2.0 cm3 and 1.532 g, respectively.
