This issue of Seed Science and Technology is a good reflection of the wide scope of the field of study. Species of interest include major cultivated crops as well as wild and native species. Likewise, research topics span a wide array of subjects relevant to those interested in basic seed biology, production, testing, ecology, conservation and biodiversity. Understanding basic mechanisms of seed dormancy and germination remains a major topic of interest. Seed quality and its attributes are also of particular interest, as evidenced by research articles on seed vigour, health, genetic purity and physical characterisation.

Seed ageing is associated with a high concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) seeds belong to the orthodox type. Due to a deep dormancy, they may be stored in dry condition at 5 °C for a long time, without viability loss. In the laboratory, artificial ageing of apple seeds is performed by imbibition in wet sand at warm temperature (33 °C). The aim of the work was to study nitric oxide (NO) as a seed vigour preservation agent. Embryos isolated from apple seeds subjected to accelerated ageing for 7, 14, 21 or 40 days were fumigated with NO. Embryo quality was estimated by TTC and MDA tests. ROS level was confirmed by NBT staining. We analysed the alteration in transcript levels of CAT, SOD and POX. NO fumigation of embryos of seeds aged for 21 days stimulated germination and increased ROS level which correlated to the elevated expression of RBOH. The increased total antioxidant capacity after NO fumigation was accompanied by the increased transcript levels of genes encoding enzymatic antioxidants, that could protect against ROS overaccumulation. Moreover, post-aged NO application diminished the nitro-oxidative modification of RNA, proving NO action as a remedy in oxidative remodelling after seeds ageing.

Introduction “Agro-homeopathy” plays an important role in sustainable agriculture providing cost-saving and residue-free plant treatments for the improvement of yield and the management of diseases and pests [1]. However, one of the main difficulties in “agro-homeopathy” is the exact choice of the right remedy and dilution, which requires the performance of many time-consuming trials. The droplet evaporation method could constitute a screening method for evaluating the efficacy of extremely low doses and high dilutions on plants. Droplet patterns prepared out of wheat seed leakages show differences in their complexity in relation to the seed vigour [2]. Here we show that this structure-forming capacity of seed leakages prepared in water or in ultra-high diluted (UHD) solutions may give a reliable picture of the treatment’s stimulating or inhibiting influence on plant vitality. Materials and Methods Part of the seeds was stressed with 0.1% As2O3 (As) aqueous solution [3]. The droplet patterns were prepared out of four samples: non-stressed (ns) seeds in water, ns-seeds in As 45x, stressed (s) seeds in water, s-seeds in As 45x. The experiment was performed in a 3 day repetition, 3 replicates per day, and 5 droplets per each replicate. The resulting patterns were evaluated by means of the ImageJ software [4] for their local connected fractal dimension (LCFD) values. The plant vigour of the four samples was evaluated by means of in vitro wheat growth [5, 6]. Results The mean LCFD of patterns deriving from s-seeds was significantly lower (1.4) vs. ns-seeds (1.7). Moreover, for both ns- and s-seeds, the LCFD was significantly higher with treatment As 45x vs. water (1.8 vs. 1.7 for ns-seeds, and 1.5 vs. 1.2 for s-seeds). The results of the growth test showed a significant vigour decrease caused by As stress (shoot length 19.7mm) vs. ns-seeds (22.4mm); a significant stimulating effect following As 45x treatment was observed for both s-seeds (25.1mm) and ns-seeds (31.4). Discussion The droplet patterns seem to be a sensitive tool for visualizing the effectiveness of UHD on seeds. The experiment showed that the pattern complexity increased with the application of the treatment for both ns- and s-seeds. The growth test provided a further verification of these results. Conclusions Further confirmations are required, but even as it is now the droplet evaporation method may be considered a promising tool for “agro-homeopathic” screening tests. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of electrostatic fields on seed vigor, mean rate of germination and coefficient of velocity of germination of five soybean genotypes. Testing was conducted at the Novi Sad Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops on the seeds of five soybean varieties: Sava, NS 2024, NS 1347, NS 3127, and NS Blackstar. The seeds were exposed to different values of direct current (DC) of the following voltage: 0 V (control), 3 V, 6 V and 9 V, to which the seeds were exposed for 0 min (control), 1 min and 3 min. After exposing the seeds to the electric field, the vigour index (VI), mean rate of germination (MGR) and coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG). The results show that the effect of the electrostatic field on seed vigour, mean rate of germination and coefficient of velocity of germination depends on the genotype, voltage and exposure time. The application of DC can be a suitable method for improving vigour index (VI), mean rate of germination (MGR) and coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG). In addition, the results indicate that it is necessary to adjust the DC treatment (voltage and duration of exposure of seeds) to a particular genotype, since inadequate treatments may deteriorate the quality of seeds.             Keywords: electrostatic field, vigor index, MGR, CVG, soybean

The maintenance of seed quality during the long-term conservation of plant genetic resources is crucial for averting the projected food crises that are linked to the changing climate and rising world population. However, ageing-induced loss of seed vigour and viability during storage remains an inevitable process that compromises productivity in several orthodox-seeded crop species. Seed ageing under prolonged storage, which can occur even under optimal conditions, induces several modifications capable of causing loss of intrinsic physiological quality traits, including germination capacity and vigour, and stand establishment. The problems posed by seed ageing have motivated the development of various techniques for mitigating their detrimental effects. These invigoration techniques generally fall within one of two categories: (1) priming or pre-hydrating seeds in a solution for improved post-harvest performance, or (2) post-storage reinvigoration which often involves soaking seeds recovered from storage in a solution. Seed priming methods are generally divided into classical (hydropriming, osmopriming, redox priming, biostimulant priming, etc.) and advanced (nanopriming, magnetopriming and priming using other physical agents) techniques. With the increasing popularity of seed invigoration techniques to achieve the much-desired enhanced productivity and resilience in the face of a changing climate, there is an urgent need to explore these techniques effectively (in addition to other important practices such as plant breeding, fertilizer application, and the control of pests and diseases). This review aims to provide an overview of ageing in orthodox seeds and invigoration techniques that can enhance desirable agronomic and physiological characters.

UDK: 582.661.51:631.53.027]:547.913 In order to investigate the effects of seed priming with silver fir and oregano essential oils on certain important seedling characteristic and seed vigour of interesting endemic and horticultural species Silene sendtneri, an experiment was conducted based on randomized completely design with three replications. Traits such as germination rate, water content, dry weight, vigour index and photosynthetic pigments were analysed. Results revealed that the seedlings obtained with priming seeds showed increased growth, water content, vigour and photosynthetic pigment contents but decreased germination rate and dry weight compared with that obtained with non-primed seeds. Analysis of seed priming effects had demonstrated even germination rate is smaller the seedling vigour is slightly higher especially with all oregano oil treatments. We suggest that oregano oil has a potential as a priming agent for improvement of seedling synchrony, although at lower rate of germination.

The current experiment was conducted to evaluate the Performance of Organic amendments and botanical treatments on seed quality parameters of French bean under stimulated environmental conditions. An experiment was conducted in 2021 at postgraduate seed testing laboratory, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding Naini Agriculture Institute, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj. The French bean Cultivar Arka Bold seeds were used for priming. Organic treatments are designated as Panchagavya 2%, 4%,6%,8%, Agniasthra 2%,4%,6%,8% and Botanicals treatments are Tulasi leaf extract 5%, Aloevera leaf extract 5%, Vinca rosea leaf extract 5% and also did hydroprming treatment using distilled water respectively. Seeds were soaked in organic, botanicals and in distilled water for duration of 6 hours followed by shade drying. The results were obtained and it was found that all the treatments showed significant effect on quality parameters. The highest was found in panchgavya of all doses followed by tulasi leaf extract found to be best in Germination percentage, Speed of Germination, Root length, Shoot length, Seedling length, Seed vigour index-I, Seed vigour Index-II compared to control or untreated seeds which indicates the effect of organics and botanicals on physiological processes of the seeds. This study revealed that priming with organic amendments and botanicals can be effective in enhancing the seed quality parameters of french bean and they are low cost, effective and nature friendly and toxic free.

Background: Seed priming technique involves soaking of seeds in priming agent to a point where germination related metabolic activities occur in the seeds followed by drying of imbibed seeds to original moisture to prevent the radical protrusion and facilitate storage of primed seed. Draining of priming agent and drying of large quantity of primed seeds is a laborious and time consuming process. The current study was aimed to standardize automation of seed priming process by utilizing house-hold top loading washing machine. Methods: The top loading washing machine referred to as Seed Priming Cabinet, contained a priming drum with provision for draining water. On completion of the soaking period, the ‘SPIN’ button was pressed by setting the duration of spin drying (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 min.). Then the seeds were removed from the drum of priming cabinet and subjected to shade drying so as to reach the original moisture content and evaluated for seed quality parameters. Result: The blackgram seed subjected to conventional hydropriming was compared with automatic seed priming for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 min. and observed that hydropriming and spin drying for 3 min. was found to be optimum and the per cent increase in germination recorded over control was 18.0 per cent thus suggesting that automation of seed priming technology can be recommended for enhanced seed vigour and crop productivity of blackgram.

The present research study was conducted at the Seed testing laboratory of Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh in 2020-2021. The research study revealedthat effect of seed priming treatments with Panchagavya, Jeevamrutha, Beejamrutha and leaf extracts, Sodium molybdate on seed quality parameters of field pea was analyzed through Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Organic treatments are designated as Panchagavya 3% and 5%, Jeevamrutha 3% and 5%, Beejamrutha 5% are used as treatment 8Hrs respectively, botanical treatments are Tulasi leaf extract 6%, Lantana camara leaf extract for 6% are used as treatment for duration of 4 hours respectivelyin which the treatment T8- Sodium molybdate (3%) for 3 Hrs exhibited higher mean value for seed germination (76.75%), root length (6.49 cm), shoot length (7.84 cm), seedling length (14.33 cm), seed vigour index -I (1099.68) and Followed by value was exhibited by T6-Tulasi Leaf Extract (6%) with respect of Root length (6.79 cm)Seedling dry weight (1.725 g), Seed Vigour Index II (129.78), T0 (control) with respect of Germination percentage (71.75%) root length (6.30 cm), shoot length (6.60 cm) and seedling length (12.90 cm), seed vigour index I &II (925.60 & 98.13).
