<p class="zhengwen"><span lang="EN-GB">The pedestrian traffic flow in bidirectional walkways is very crucial aspect influenced by the level of pedestrians’ decisions.</span><span lang="EN-GB"> In this article, the authors show that the simulated pedestrians walking based on crowd dynamics models of low level mechanism of navigation (operational level) are short-sighted in avoiding counter flow. Such limitation resulted in unrealistic formation of motion in bidirectional flow, that the movement is less systematic and the lanes are less coherent than what in real situation. To obtain a more representative model, the authors improve the investigation capability model as a tactical decision model to be incorporated into a crowd dynamics model to reproduce better formation of motion. This is accomplished by granting the pedestrians the ability to investigate the macroscopic behaviors in their investigation areas and make decisions for convenience flow. The new model considers the average density and flow inside such areas and models their effect on the pedestrians' decisions. Simulations are performed to validate the work qualitatively by tracing the behavior of the simulated pedestrians and studying the impact of this behavior on the self-organized phenomenon: lane formation. Furthermore, the fundamental diagram of bidirectional flow is reproduced and compared with experimental fundamental diagrams.</span></p>

Incorporating decision-making capability as an intelligence aspect into crowd dynamics models is crucial factor for reproducing realistic pedestrian flow. Crowd dynamics models are still suffering from poor representation of essential behaviors such as lane changing behavior. In this article, we provide the simulated pedestrians in the social force model more intelligence as an extension to the pedestrian’s investigation capability in bidirectional walkways, to let the model appear more representative of what actually happens in reality. In the proposed model, the lane’s structure is modeled as social network. Thereby, the simulated pedestrians with inconvenient walking can detect the available lanes inside his environment, investigate their attractions, and then make decisions to join the most attractive one. Simulations are performed to validate the work qualitatively by tracing the behavior of the simulated pedestrians and studying the impact of this behavior on lane formation. Finally, a quantitative measurement is used to study the effect of our contribution on the pedestrians’ efficiency of motion.

Due to the limited safety of pedestrians, as well as the ability to direct their movement according to the established infrastructure, the analysis of the impact of factors consistent with the concept of push/pull, seems justified and useful. The aim of the article is to try to apply the concepts of push / pull in terms of the impact of logistics infrastructure on the nature of pedestrian traffic. The components of the logistics infrastructure related to the movement of the population are public roads, roads of cities and other settlements, departmental (technological) roads, roads in private areas, providing access to external and internal vehicles and passengers. The nature of pedestrian traffic is determined by the decision-making process of a certain person when moving along a certain route. It is proved that the form and result of this process are influenced by psychological and social mechanisms. It is established the main psychological and social characteristics of pedestrian traffic: maintaining personal space, as a result of which people prefer to «move for», keeping a distance of ten or several tens of centimeters; avoidance of direct impact of discomfort (psychological and physical), ie «movement from» different intensities, depending on the scale of the projected threat; minimization of efforts that cause «movement against» the shortest way; conformism (tendency to succumb to group behavior and attitude to novelty, different levels of which determine belonging to groups of innovators, early followers, early majority, late majority and conservatives); cultural norms (modification of behavior based on the influence of learned principles). The article presents models of simple situations of pedestrian traffic, which in practice demonstrate the influence of determinants of push/pull factors. It is substantiated that simulation of pedestrian traffic allows to increase its safety. Pedestrian safety issues are particularly important due to the high risk of accidents and their impact on other transport processes. However, the current state of knowledge about the determinants of the push / pull system does not yet allow such a free and comprehensive modeling.

Abstract The self-organization of a thermally relativistic magnetized plasma comprising of electrons, positrons and static ions is investigated. The self-organized state is found to be the superposition of three distinct Beltrami fields known as triple Beltrami (TB) state. In general, the eigenvalues associated with the multiscale self-organized vortices may be a pair of complex conjugate and real one. It is shown that all the eigenvalues become real when thermal energy increases or the positron density decreases. The impact of relativistic temperature and positron density on the formation of self-organized structures is investigated. The self-organized field and flow vortices may vary simultaneously on vastly different length scales. The disparate variation of self-organized vortices is important in the context of dynamo theory. The present work is useful to study the formation of multiscale vortices and dynamo mechanisms in multi-species thermally relativistic plasmas.

System dynamics models can facilitate the understanding of complex and dynamic biomedical systems such as in HIV/AIDS. Untangling the dynamics among various population stocks (e.g., susceptible population, infected population, HIV population, AIDS population) can be used to investigate the effective points of interventions in the HIV/AIDS cycle. With that in mind, the authors have developed a system dynamics model that can be used to examine various policy decisions for the prevention and the treatment of HIV/AIDS. The specific objectives of their study was to examine the growing number of AIDS-related deaths in Canada. They used the authors’ dynamic simulation model to evaluate the impact of various HIV/AIDS policy intervention scenarios centred on the reduction of the number of AIDS deaths in Canada. Their analysis suggests that more lives will be saved if effective preventive and treatment programs are implemented simultaneously. A simultaneous implementation of these programs will also result in a much smaller HIV-infected and AIDS populations.

Purpose Media has always been used as a key manipulator of public agendas, political beliefs and individuals’ attitudes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of three adaptive media strategies on the pattern and dynamics of potential crowds. Design/methodology/approach An agent-based approach is used to simulate the three adaptive media strategies on the pattern and dynamics of potential crowds. During the experiments, the media broadcast is intensified to gather momentum for crowd movements or is lessened to maintain the budget. Findings The results show that a slight change in the media management strategy could lead to a radical different impact on the crowd dynamics. The results also show that a quite smart media strategy could outperform a strategy with an unlimited budget. Finally, the structure of the society shows a significant influence on the crowd dynamics than it could be inferred. Originality/value The model presents an explanatory toolkit for the crowd complexity. The results provide deep insights into the crowd formation and a basis for understanding the influence of media and the impact of its strategies on the crowd dynamics.

Social capital plays a significant role in post-disaster community participation and disaster recovery. This study divides social capital into three aspects: Cognition, structure, and relation, and discusses the impact of these factors on community participation in post-disaster recovery. Through data analysis, we found that a self-organized relationship villager network had a positive effect on villagers’ participation in voluntary community activities after an earthquake, while the local cadre relationship network had a negative impact. However, the latter could encourage villagers to participate in disaster-recovery activities organized by the local government. These findings indicate that the mobilization mechanism for post-disaster local-government reconstruction and community self-organization are the same, both coming through the social-acquaintance network, a type of noninstitutionalized social capital. The implication of this study suggests that local government should attach much importance to the construction and integration of social networks in earthquake-stricken areas to cultivate community social capital.
