Aim: To investigate the relationship between patients self perceived satisfaction and basal seat characteristics in edentulous patients attending a teaching hospital in Lagos.Materials and Methods: Consecutive edentulous patient seen for 6 months in Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos were recruited for this longitudinal study. The data collected were basal seat characteristics and self perceived satisfaction.Results: A total of 30 patients were seen but only 24 complied with the study protocol. The use of objective assessment in classifying maxillary residual ridge showed that there was a significant association (P=0.045) between the ridge and self perceived satisfaction. There was no significant association between self perceived satisfaction and shape of mandibular ridge, palatal vault and vestibular depth.Conclusion: There was a significant association between shape of maxillary residual ridge and self perceived satisfaction. Objective preclinical assessment of residual ridge may help to project satisfaction and determine treatment option.

Background/Aim. Balanced occlusal arrangement of artificial teeth and balanced occlusion is a specific type of occlusion that preserves the stability of complete dentures. Balanced occlusion comprises realization of tooth contacts at the working side as well as at the balancing side, at the same time. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of balanced occlusal arrangement of artificial teeth on the decrease in reduction of edentulous alveolar ridge. Methods. A longitudinal study on 91 fully edentulous patients was conducted using their panoramic radiographs and parameters of vertical dimension of edentulous ridges. All the patients were clinically examined by the same and a qualified dental practitioner. Numerical values of parameters of vertical dimensions of edentulous ridges and lines were statistically processed and compared using the Student?s t-test. Results. Vertical dimensions and heights of edentulous ridges were different after comparison of parameters in complete denture wearers with balanced occlusion and complete denture wearers without bilaterally balanced occlusion, as well as between male and female edentulous patients. Statistically significant differences of heights were established in complete denture wearers? with a set of artificial teeth without balanced occlusion, at the baseline and 12 months after wearing of complete dentures. Conclusion. Balanced occlusion is a favored occlusal design in setting of artificial teeth in conventional complete dentures, which preserves edentulous ridge and influence the stability of dentures.

ABSTRACT The conventional mandibular complete dentures are often associated with advanced ridge resorption and loss of retention. Dental implants in the anterior mandible were documented as being highly successful treatment option for overdenture. It has been use to improve the retention of mandibular dentures and also to improve patient's satisfaction. Because of high success rates, as well as lower costs, it is common to treat edentulous patients with just two implants and ball attachments for retention of the overdenture, instead of four implants and a bar. In this article a simple process of converting existing conventional denture into an implant supported overdenture by housing the retentive elements directly into the impression surface of the denture through a simple chairside technique is described. ABSTRACT Treatment of partially edentulous patients with few remaining teeth is very challenging. These cases can be successfully treated with natural teeth supported overdentures. Comprehensive treatment plan with natural teeth supported overdentures saves the proprioceptive response of the teeth, along with other benefits such as improved masticatory efficiency, better retention, stability, support as compared to conventional tissue supported complete dentures. The other most important benefit of overdentures is the psychological security of well retaining dentures which increases patient's confidence level. This article presents a case report in which a partially edentulous patient was successfully rehabilitated with comprehensive treatment of maxillary natural teeth supported overdenture with locator attachment (Zest Anchors) and mandibular partial denture.
