This report describes the use of a temporary dental implant to secure a radiographic fiducial marker and patient tracking tag to an edentulous mandible for dynamically guided implant placement into a fibula microvascular free flap. A small diameter dental implant was placed into the anterior mandible to secure a radiographic fiducial marker followed by a patient tag. The patient tag allowed for tracking of the patient’s mandible during placement of endosseous dental implants. Four endosseous dental implants were successfully placed into the edentulous fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction. Dynamic navigation using a small diameter implant to secure radiographic fiducial markers and patient tags provides a novel technique to place implants into an edentulous microvascular free flap with minimal incision and reflection of soft tissue.

AbstractAmeloblastoma is the most common benign odontogenic tumor of epithelial origin. It exhibits a locally aggressive behavior and high recurrence rate with multitude of factors involving in its molecular pathogenesis. This article reports a case of acanthomatous ameloblastoma involving the mandible in a 60-year-old male patient with peculiar imaging characteristics. The role of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosis of conventional ameloblastoma has been elaborately emphasized in the discussion. Although the final diagnosis is based on histopathological features, physicians should be aware of the role of advanced imaging for diagnosis of ameloblastoma and for better surgical management.

Gingival recessions constitute serious limitations for effective interdisciplinary periodontal, orthodontic, and implant therapy. A proper bone morphology of the alveolar bone and soft tissues that cover it are interdependent. The regeneration procedures known to date are based on the use of autogenous bone, or its allogeneic, xenogeneic, or alloplastic substitutes. These substitutes are characterized by different osteogenesis potentials. No effective procedure for three-dimensional bone reconstruction for cases in which there is dentition with recessions has been described to date, especially in its vertical dimension. This article presents the patented method of the three-dimensional bone reconstruction of the anterior mandible with preserved dentition when using an allogeneic bone block, and also includes a case report with a 2-year follow-up as an example. Based on clinical observations, it was stated that the intended therapeutic effect was achieved. There was no recession, shallowing of the vestibule, signs of inflammation, or pathological mobility of the teeth in the area undergoing reconstruction. The radiographic images revealed the formation of a new layer of cortical bone on the vestibular side and a certain volume of cancellous bone. No radiological demarcation zone of brightening, which indicates an incomplete adaptation, integration, and reconstruction of the bone block, was found.

Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) is a non-inflammatory developmental odontogenic cyst arises from cell rest of the dental lamina and most commonly occurs in the posterior of the mandible. OKC may be detected in patients of various age groups, from infants to seniors, and usually occurs in the third and fourth decades of the patient’s life. Female to male prevalence is 2:1 respectively. Mandible makes up 60% to 80% of cases and shows a specific tendency to involve the ramus and posterior area. Detection of OKC through clinical exams and radiography is to be suspected, and thus, confirmation via histopathology is needed. This study describes the occurrence of this lesion in a rare location in a 36 years old female patient.

Abstract Description of the content of simple bone cyst (SBC) has been controversial. This study aimed to evaluate and give a clearer picture of the contents of the SBC cavity. Nineteen patients SBC confirmed by histopathological examination, between 2014 and 2016, were included in this study. The clinical, radiographic, surgical and laboratory findings of SBC cavity content was analyzed. For statistical analysis, paired samples t-test was used to evaluate the difference of components among cavity fluid, blood and serum. All 19 SBC cases radiographically and surgically revealed a fluid-filled cavity. The average age of the patients was 21.3±13.2 years. Any sex predominance was not found. SBCs were more often found in the anterior mandible site (n=12, 63.2%). All lesions were filled with clear straw-colored or low concentrated blood-colored flood. Although the laboratory analysis of the fluid showed components similar to those in blood and serum, the statistical analysis showed that the fluid components were not significantly different only for eosinophils (p = 0.43) and basophils (p = 0.06) counts as blood components, and sodium (p = 0.76), potassium (p = 0.08) and chloride (p = 0.13) concentration as serum components. Within a limitation of this study, the results shows that SBC is fluid-filled cavity and the cavity fluid is more likely similar to the serum rather than the blood regarding the internal components.
