Amphotericin B (AmB) is commonly used in patients with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive diagnosis for the treatment of disseminated fungal infections such as Histoplasma spp. or Cryptococcus spp. Newer liposomal formulations of AmB have been introduced to the market to avoid the toxic effects of the traditional agent. With the introduction of these new agents, there is a risk of confusion between the agents in regards to dosing, which may lead to toxicity. We report the case of an HIV-seropositive patient who inadvertently received five times the dose of AmB deoxycholate for disseminated Histoplasma capsulatum and died.

A double-blind comparative study of Otoseptil Ear Drops and Otosporin Ear Drops in otitis externa in fifty-eight patients revealed them both to be equally effective in a series with very few fungal infections. In view of the normally high proportion of infections including fungi, there are obvious advantages in using Otoseptil Ear Drops.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a malignant, rare, and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma with poor response to treatment that most commonly involves the oral mucosa of immunodeficient patients. The orbit might be primarily or secondarily involved; on the other hand other pathological conditions, i.e., fungal infections, may localize in the orbit in both immunocompromised patients and drug user, which might have similar radiological features. We describe the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of an orbital plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) in an immunocompromised HIV positive drug user patient.
