Information on the aquatic and semiaquatic vegetation of the major watercourses of West Siberia is relatively scarce, while this of small rivers is practically absent. There are 430 rivers whose length exceeds 10 km within the Novosibirsk Region. The aim of our work was to study the phytocenotic diversity of their aquatic and semiaquatic vegetation. 130 geobotanical relevés were performed by the authors in July–August 2003–2005. The object was aquatic communities formed by true aquatic (submergent and floating-leaved) plants and semiaquatic ones with emergent plants and these of water′s edge. In total 10 watercourses were studied (Table 1): 2–3 in each of five geomorphologic regions within the forest-steppe zone (Table 2). The upper, middle and lower courses (Fig. 1, Table 1) with the length of 2–2.5 km were studied in each case to ensure the 4–5 repetition of main elements (stream pools and ridges) that would give a reliable information on their flora and vegetation. The sample plots were selected above the settlements, whenever possible in sites with no to intensive anthropogenic impact. The data were collected according to J. Braun-Blanquet (1964) approach. The relevés were done on the sample plot of 100 m2 placed in the most homogeneous part of the community or, in case of its smaller area, within the natural boundaries. The following scale was used for abundance estimation: r — the species is extremely rare; + — rare, small cover; 1 — the number of individuals is large, the cover is small or individuals are sparse, but the cover is large; 2 —cover of 5–25 %; 3 — 26–50 %; 4 — 51–75 %; 5 — more than 75 %. The date on water depth, transparency (on a white Secchi disk with a diameter of 30 cm), temperature and the flow rate were obtained. The soil mechanical composition and color, the degree and nature of anthropogenic impact on vegetation and river banks were quantified. Water samples for general chemical analysis were taken in the middle course of each river. Computer programs TURBOVEG and MEGATAB (Hennekens, 1996) were used for database. The syntaxonomic affiliation of phytocenoses was determined using modern literature (Bobrov, Chemeris, 2006; Vegetace..., 2011; Chepinoga, 2015; Landucci et al. 2015; Mucina et al., 2016, etc.). 36 associations and 3 communities belonging to 12 alliances, 9 orders, and 5 classes have been identified (Tables 3–14, Fig. 2–9). Such great syntaxonomic diversity is determined by the significant ecotopic variety, the variability of substrates, the wide range of water flow rates and the different water trophicity. For comparison, 26 associations, 13 variants, 2 communities were identified in the study of 50 rivers of Lithuania (Sinkyavichene, 1992); altogether 84 associations are known for the Upper Volga region as a whole (Bob­rov, Chemeris, 2006), while 45 ones were recorded previously in 130 watercourses of this region (Bobrov, 1999). Information on small river macroalgae cenoses in the study area is partially reflected in the paper published earlier (Bobrov et al., 2005).

In five species of Trollius L., seed production of fruits was studied, plants being grown in culture in the forest steppe zone in Western Siberia. 2 species representing Chiastocheta genus were identified as specialized pollinators (Diptera, Anthomyiidae). Those insects pollinate the flowers and damage the seeds of three globeflower species: T. apertus, T. europaeus T. asiaticus. The flower season of other two species (T. chinensis and T. ledebourii) starts later and the plants can’t be exposed to invasion, as Chiastocheta flies are at their larval stage yet. Pollination of these species is performed by non-specialized agents. The lowest rate of seed production realization of about 20% is registered in T. europaeus, while in T. ledebourii it is the highest comprising 71%. We consider the flies of Chiastocheta genus as an important part of the complex of factors lowering seed productivity in Trollius and their relationship as parasitism. Thus, in West Siberia for Trollius seed production increase, measures intended to reduce Chiastocheta abundance will be useful.

The aim of the study. The aim of the study was to estimate heterogeneity of moisture-related soil physical properties in a sequence of degraded hillslope soils in the cis-Salair region. The main tasks were to examine spatial fluctuations and changes in morphological and agrophysical properties of soils, differing in erosion degree, and assess their variability. Location and time of the study. The study was conducted in the forest-steppe zone in the Bugotak Hills (Novosibirsk region, Russia). A sequence of arable soils located along the 411 m convex hillslope with south-eastern exposition was investigated since July 01 till August 15, 2016. Main results. The article describes the variation of soil density, moisture content and temperature in a sequence of hillslope soils. The variation in the ploughed layer was found to be quite high, depending on the sampling scale. Examination of the spatial variability of the soil hydrophysical properties showed that the non-eroded podzolised chernozem (Luvic Greyzemic Chernozem) and toeslope meadow soil (Gleyic Greyzemic Phaeozem, Colluvic)had the highest density. The lower temperatures were recorded in the slightly eroded dark-gray forest soil (Luvic Greyzemic Phaeozem) and in the toeslope meadow soil, accumulating soil material eroded from the topslope. The temperature difference range between the “cold” and “warm” soils was 1.8 °С. Conclusions. Such studies have important prospects in development and introduction of agricultural technologies that are landscape-adapted, especially in areas with diverse relief and eroded soils. The main focus of such research should be the anti-erosion landscaping. The problem needs to be further studied within the framework of targeting the anti-erosion measures to geographic regions and natural zones.

The review describes the main stages of the formation and development of soil zoology as a science at the intersection of zoology, ecology and soil science, approximately over a century, i.e. from the beginning of the 1920s until now. The analysis of soil-zoological work carried out in the forest-steppe zone, the subject of which was the fauna and population of soil protozoa, worms, molluscs, microarthropods and larger arthropods, collectively referred to as mesofauna. The forest-steppe was chosen as the topic of the review because it is well-studied and because most of the work on this biome was published in Russian, and little is known abroad (which is not surprising, since more than 80% of the forest-steppe territory is located in Russia). The authors reviewed about 170 the most significant works inventorying soil fauna, analyzing its ecological structure and the functional role of its various components, as well as the studies of the anthropogenic impact on soil animal populations. The works are presented on a territorial basis: the west of the European part of the USSR (Russia), the Volga region and West Siberia. The high species richness and originality of the soil fauna in the forest-steppe, its high resistance to natural and anthropogenic influences were shown. At the end, the review indicates some promising directions for soil fauna research in the Russian forest-steppe.

Small-leaved forests of the galley and ravine systems on the Priobskoe plateau (West Siberia) belong to the Brachypodio pinnati–Betuletea pendulae class and the Calamagrostio epigei–Betuletalia pendulae order. All forest types were classified according to the Braun-Blanquet approach. Three new associations and four subassociations were described. Floristic composition presented by mixture of forest, meadow and steppe species reveals the geographical position and the environmental conditions of forest habitats. Forest distribution depends on the slope exposition and steepness. In spite of strong anthropogenic pressure many of forest patches could be considered as refuges of natural biodiversity in forest-steppe zone.

Purpose. Evaluate the introduced samples of soft winter wheat from the international nursery Common Bunt-Resistant Nursery (CBUNT-RES) of different ecological and geographical origin in the southern part of the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine according to a set of productivity indicators in order to define the most valuable samples and describe them.Methods. During 2016–2019 on the base of Ustymivka Experimental Station for Plant Production of the V. Ya. Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS the authors studied, evaluated and described 75 new soft winter wheat samples of various eco-geographical origins by productivity traits. In the field and laboratory conditions, indicators of yield and productivi­ty were determined: 1000 grains weight, plant height and ear length, the number of spikelets and grains in the ear, weight of ear and grain and early-ripening.Results. Plant material with increased parameters of economic and biological characters was identified. During studies, it was found that ‘F08347G8’, ‘F00628G34-1’ (Romania), ‘91-142A61/KATIA1//GRISET-4’, ‘SAULESKU#44/TR810200//GRISET-4’, ‘ATTILA/BABAX//PASTOR/4/…’ (IU067591) (Turkey), ‘INTENSIVNAYA//PBW343*2/TUKURU’, ‘SANZAR-8/KKTS’ (Mexico) were the high-yielding varieties. The samples of soft winter wheat as ‘F08347G8’, ‘F00628G34-1’ (Romania), ‘INTENSIVNAYA//PBW343*2/…’ (IU067637) (Mexico), ‘ATAY/GALVEZ87/6/TAST/…’ (IU067587), ‘DE9/MERCAN-2’, ‘KRASNODAR/FRTL/6…’ (IU067595), ‘SAULESKU#44/TR810200//GRISET-4’, ‘GANSU-1/3/AUSGS50AT34/…’ (IU067598), ‘ORKINOS-1*2/3/AUS…’ (IU067608), ‘KAMBARA1/ZANDER-17’ , ‘TAM200/KAUZ/4/CHAM6//…’ (IU067612) (Turkey) contained a large grain weight (more than 5.0 g), plant productivity in these samples was rather high due to increased amount of grains and the thousand kernel weight.Conclusions. The introduced soft winter wheat samples of various eco-geographical origins were adapted to the Southern Forest-Steppe and can be recommended as a source material in breeding to increasing productive capacity.

The effect of weather conditions and such soil properties as pH, salt content, as well as different forms of macroand trace elements, on phytocoenoses biodiversity and chemical element contents in the aboveground phytomass was investigated in the forest-steppe zone of the West Siberian plain. Soil chemical element composition and salinity content were found to affect the phytomass content of N, P, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Sr, Li.

Forest plantings are of great importance in the forest-steppe and steppe regions because they perform the func-tions of transformation, conservation and restoration of natural landscapes. Their forest improvement role is to create the optimal soil water and air regimes, prevent wind and water erosion, reduce wind speed, thus providing agri-cultural lands with sustainable crops. Such functions are performed by the forest plantings of the Chupinskiy pine forest of the Altai Region where the forest fund has de-creased as a result of felling and fires. The reforestation of the Chupinskiy pine forest is a primary and difficult task for workers of the in the Altai Region’s forest industry. For the successful forest management aimed at performing protec-tive functions, it is necessary to continue the previously begun research in the already created coniferous stands on soils of various forest suitability. The research goal is to study the formation features of protective forest plantings on the sod-podzolic soils of the Chupinskiy pine forest. The research was carried out by the method of sample plots which were laid in accordance with the standard OST 56-69-83. The soils were studied according to the procedures common in soil surveys. Geobotanical descriptions were carried out according to the standard methods. The soil is characterized by a low fertility level; this determines the formation of relatively low-productive pine plantings. The live ground cover on the glades and under the canopy of forest stands differs in composition and structure. The for-mation of 13-year-old protective forest pine plantings set out on sod-podzolic soils in the arid steppe subzone of the steppe zone of West Siberia proceeds similarly to the pine plantations in other regions of Eurasia. The tree distribu-tion, forest crop density (1.75 thousand trees per ha) con-tributed to the formation of relatively low forest valuation indices of productivity (standing volume -88 m3ha). In order to increase the sustainability of the cultivated protec-tive pine plantings and the performance of their protective functions, it is advised to carry out improvement felling of low intensity.
