Regional development is currently becoming one of the key determinants contributing to the activation of local actors of regional development with a view to contributing to national economic development. For this reason, it is not desirable for the overall favourable development of the Slovak economy to exist or to deepen the differences in the economic performance of regions. The starting point for establishing a targeted set of support and development instruments is an active state approach to identifying problem regions and identifying key areas where targeted financial or non-financial support can be directed. The aim of this paper is to assess their impact on mitigating the negative economic and social impacts, which have been typical for these regions for several decades.

Our paper aims to identify and evaluate the factors determining the differentiated development of the regional structure of the Slovak Republic through analysis; directly or indirectly to show the reasons for the lag of some regions of the Slovak Republic. We will analyze the socio-economic lag of the regions in Slovakia through relevant social and economic indicators (e.g. unemployment rate, economic performance, the sectoral structure of the economy, state of infrastructure, average wages, selected demographic structures, level of innovation and others). We calculate and evaluate regional disparities using selected methods, which should point us to the fact that the differences between developed and lagging regions have already reached such proportions that regional polarization and regional disparities are entirely appropriate for this situation.

The paper deals with analysis of the development of performances in freight rail transport in comparison with the development of gross domestic product as the main indicator measuring the economic performance of the country and on the other hand the performances in passenger rail transport in relation to the development of the average monthly wage as one of the most important indicator characterizing the living standard. The change in demand for transport services is analyzed with respect to the change in the price of the ticket in passenger rail transport and also the change in the price for transport of one tonne of goods in freight rail transport.

In this paper we will present theresults of our survey on Economic Freedom, andimpact of its individual categories on economic growthin former socialist countries which have joined theEuropean Union (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic,Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland,Romania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia). To measureeconomic freedom we will use The Index of EconomicFreedom published by the Heritage Foundation incooperation with the Wall Street Journal. We find thateconomic freedom has a positive, but statisticallyinsignificant impact on economic performance. Ourresult also indicates that individual categories of theEconomic Freedom have a different impact oneconomic performance.
