The low temperature phase of Pd5Ce (L-Pd5Ce) has a one-dimensional long period superstructure (1D-LPS) derived from Ll2. The periodic antiphase boundaries (APBs) are parallel to (110) planes and have a shift vector of 1/2[110]. Hereafter, the indices are referred to the basic lattices of Ll2 As insertion of the APB causes a change in composition, such an APB is called “non-conservative”. Then, a domain size M depends upon the Ce concentration in the alloy. It was found that M increases also with temperature. The temperature dependency of M is attributed to a change of the degree of order within the antiphase domains. In this work, morphology of the non-conservative APBs is observed to clarify the formation process of the 1D-LPS.The alloy of Pd-16.7 at%Ce was prepared by arc melting in argon atmosphere. Disc specimens made from the alloy ingot were first held at 985 K for 260 ks and quenched in iced water to obtain the state of M=∞ or Ll2, followed by annealing for various lengths of time. The annealing temperature was 873 K where the equilibrium value for M is about 3 in unit of (110) lattice spacing of Ll2. Observation was carried out using microscopes JEM-2000FX, JEM-4000EX (HVEM Lab., Kyushu Univ.) and JEM-2000EX (Dept. of Mater. Sci. Tech., Kyushu Univ.).

Therapeutic hypothermia currently is successfully in various fields of medicine to protect biological tissues from ischemia. However the issue of changes in intraocular temperature under hypothermia remains poorly understood. Purpose. To study the dynamics of intraocular temperature in conditions of local hypothermia and on the basis of the obtained data to develop a mathematical model of thermophysical processes in the rabbit eye. Materials and methods. An in vivo experiment was performed on 10 rabbits (20 eyes). In group 1 (5 rabbits, 10 eyes), epibulbar and intraocular temperature was measured after local contact hypothermia through closed eyelids, in group 2 (5 rabbits, 10 eyes) after local contact hypothermia directly through the cornea. Ti-(5–20)Nb-(0.5–1)O alloys (mass%) were investigated for developing low-cost biomedical α+β-type Ti alloy. Ti-(5, 10, 15, 20)Nb-(0.5, 0.75, 1)O alloys (mass%) were arc-melted and forged into bars. The forged alloy bars were heat-treated at 873 to 1373 K for 3.6 ks in an Ar atmosphere and quenched in iced water. β transus (Tβ) of the Ti-Nb-O alloys decreased with increasing Nb content. An increase in the oxygen content led to an increase in Tβ. After quenching, the formation of α′ martensite was observed in Ti-5Nb-yO alloys. An increase in the Nb content to 10 mass% led to the formation of α′ and α″ martensites. A further increase in the Nb content to 15 and 20mass% resulted in the formation of more α″ martensites. The boundary temperature for the formation of α′ and α″ martensite in the Ti-10Nb-yO alloys increased with increasing oxygen content, because oxygen enhances the Nb distribution to the β phase. The ultimate tensile strength of the Ti-xNb-0.75O alloys heattreated to obtain the α-phase fraction (fα) of 0.5 was over 1000 MPa, except for the Ti-15Nb-0.75O alloy. The total elongation decreased with increasing Nb content. The Ti-5Nb-0.75O alloy exhibited excellent strength-ductility balance as a low-cost α+β-type biomedical Ti alloy.

A characteristic propulsive wave, previously reported in adults with ulcerative colitis, has been found in infants with acute diarrhea but not in children with ulcerative colitis. The reasons for this are discussed. The induction of propulsive wave forms in normal individuals by administration of magnesium sulfate orally is described and attention is called to its application to therapeutic studies. The relation of this wave form to propulsion of fecal contents and defecation and its role in the production of abdominal discomfort are considered. Observed variations in the responses of individual children to subcutaneous injection of Mecholyl®, to oral administration of iced water, and to rectal distention may explain innate differences in susceptibility to the development of colonic symptoms in different children. A classification of wave forms from the distal colon based on current concepts of their probable physiologic significance is offered. A tracing from the distal colon in a child having a spontaneous bowel movement is presented and commented on.
