The Impact

In this article, a recently developed method called surface defect machining (SDM) for hard turning has been adopted and termed surface defect hard turning (SDHT). The main purpose of the present study was to explore the impact of cutting parameters like cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, and tool geometry parameters such as nose radius and negative rake angle of the machining force during surface defect hard turning (SDHT) of AISI 52100 steel in dry condition with Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tool; and results were compared with conventional hard turning (CHT). Experimentation is devised and executed as per Central Composite Design (CCD) of Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Results reported that an average machining force was decreased by 22% for surface defect hard turning (SDHT) compared to conventional hard turning (CHT).

Recent Developments

In precision machining, due to the recent developments on the cutting tools, machine tool structural rigidity and improved CNC controllers, hard turning is an emerging process as an alternative to some of the grinding processes by providing reductions in costs and cycle-times. In industrial environments, hard turning is established for geometry features of parts with low to medium requirements on part quality. Better and deeper understanding of cutting forces, stresses and temperature fields, temperature gradients created during the machining are very critical for achieving highest quality products and high productivity in feasible cycle times. In order to enlarge the capability profile of the hard turning process, this paper introduces to prediction models of mechanical and thermal loads during turning of 51CrV4 with hardness of 68 HRC by CBN tool. The shear flow stress, shear and friction angles are determined from the orthogonal cutting tests. Cutting force coefficients are determined from orthogonal to oblique transformations. Cutting forces and surface profiles are predicted and compared with experimental measurements.

The purpose is to contribute with information on the resulting surface condition from hard turning process of mechanical components manufactured from carburized steel. The surface was examined by parameters obtained from the three-dimensional surface topography obtained with an interferometric laser instrument. The selected roughness parameters analysis intends to have a functional characterization such as bearing capacity, fluid and lubricants retention ability and contact wear resistance. The results obtained from the surface roughness measurement show consistency with other authors’ results, and the technique of hardened material turning is capable of producing surfaces with functionality and quality.

Through a set of electro-hydraulic digital valve as the core of the fuzzy control system to provide an appropriate amount of cooling fluid, the hard turning process temperature can be controlled at any set temperature. The use of the signal acquisition system based on virtual instrument, acquisition acoustic emission signals, vibration signals and temperature signals during the hard turning process. The temperature signal is processed by wavelet transform ,after vibration and acoustic emission signals be processed by wavelet packet decomposition and energy method, it is found that through providing appropriate cooling fluid can control temperatures in the processing and decrease the amplitude of vibration and acoustic emission signal, it also means that we can improve the quality of processing, and prolong the life of tool.
