This chapter explores the politics of social status hierarchies in the Sahel (freeborn, “castes,” slaves) and the rich literature devoted to this theme. It looks specifically at two themes. First, the paradoxical relationship between Islam and social status stratification. The doctrinal equality of the believers before God has often been negated in practice, as “freeborn” lineages have taken over positions of Islamic leadership. But recently some religious movements (Islamism, Sufism, perhaps some jihadism as well) and social movements have challenged the hierarchy of status differences, some in words only, others in deeds as well. The second theme covers the relationship between the construction of colonial and postcolonial states and status hierarchies. Officially, in postcolonial states all citizens are equal under the law. But informally, little is done to counter practices that perpetuate status discrimination such as slavery. Also, electoral politics can both crystalize social status differences and trigger mobilization against status inequalities.

Despite the efforts of the Nigerian government at tackling the problems of terrorism and corruption, the terrorist activities of the Boko Ḥarām added to those of herdsmen, cattle rustlers, farmers, cultists, and militias who kill, vandalize, rob, rape, and kidnap with impunity all over the country have virtually destroyed the country, especially Northeast Nigeria. Its tourism industry has virtually gone into extinction in addition to the challenges of human, arms, and drugs trafficking; money laundering; child soldiers; and internally displaced persons in the region. All these take place while the country is also confronting the challenges of corruption. In what ways has Muhammadu Buhari administration tried to free Nigeria from terrorism and corruption? How are the challenges of terrorism and corruption tied to the development of the country? What role can Islamic leadership model play in bringing an end to these multifarious challenges ravaging the country? These are some of the questions that this papers answers using the leadership model of the Sharī‘ah.

Many Muslim leaders, entrepreneurs, and managers in Malaysia successfully apply the Al-Quran and Sunnah to their business organizations. In an organization, Islam stresses the cooperation and sense of collectiveness among the employees, as in fact, the religion cannot be practiced in separation. The collective efforts of people in a work situation should be aimed at achieving a certain goal since organizations are composed of very distinct people who are each of unique character and contribute in a particular way based on cultural diversity. In order to create an ethical organization culture that provides a fair treatment to all employees, Islamic leadership principles would become the best method for realizing it. Many verses in the Al-Quran explains justice and honesty in trade as well as courtesy and fairness in employment. In succession, managers should follow many values and norms in Islam as regards the practice in the organization.

Purpose – The paper provides some fundamental observations on leadership from an Islamic perspective and the Islamic revealed knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to measure the association between Islamic leadership and the most common western forms of leadership namely; transactional, transformational, authentic, and ethical leadership styles as well as its relationship on leader’s effectiveness and organizational innovation. Design/methodology/approach – An empirical investigation was conducted using portrait value questionnaire recommended by Schwartz (1994b), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) followed by structural equation modelling (SEM). In addition the findings revealed that Islamic leadership is positively correlated with transformational, ethical, and authentic leadership as well and not with the transactional leadership style.
