Quality Control (QC) is a guideline or set of procedures intended to ensure that a manufactured product or performed service adheres to a defined set of quality criteria or meets the requirements of the client or customer. Smart manufacturing is where the work is interfaced work pieces and associated tools that include logistics operations, Cyber Physical Systems, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data Analytic tools. These form the norm of manufacturing operations to generate large amounts of data, which are used for analysis and prediction. Therefore, help to optimise the quality of manufacturing operations and manufactured products. The change in technologies have, however, altered the traditional way of manufacturing process as well as QC systems. Therefore, to address the challenge of data reliability, the sensors, actuators and instruments used at various levels of integration in the manufacturing process often operating under adverse physical conditions need to provide adequate levels of data accuracy and precision. Methodologically, the Chapter followed critical literature review on QC concepts and Industry 4.0 revolution, thereby culminating into conceptual framework of QC in Smart Manufacturing, which is the main contribution of this Chapter.

Abstract An interlaboratory quality control study was conducted to provide information to 5 participating Canadian laboratories on their capability in analyzing natural waters for 10 pesticides. The study was designed to identify the quality of each laboratory’s working standards for 15 organochlorine pesticides, and the accuracy and precision of each laboratory’s analytical procedures. Fifteen samples were provided, of which 3 were standards prepared for direct injection into an electron capture gas chromatograph. Instructions were provided to use these 3 standards for quantitating the pesticide content (8–150 ng/L) in 5 pairs of 1 L water samples. These paired samples contained 10 organochlorine pesticides approaching natural levels. Results of the study indicated that participants were fairly precise and achieved the designed ratio 1.5 for concentrations in the paired samples.

Abstract The Covid -19 is arguably the biggest pandemic in history and there are a lot of challenges that must be dealt with. One of the biggest challenges post Covid-19 is to tackle quality control challenges. This research paper discusses some of these challenges and solutions using an integrated internet of things (IoT) and internet of protocols (IoP) based approach and further showing its implementation in the industry world and hence, proving to be a solution for damage assessment. With the help of IoT- enabled quality control system, six-sigma rule is also analysed. Post Covid crisis, it is important for every institution to gain back customer trust so quality of materials should be maintained and IoT enables us to do the same. The unification of industrial IoT (IIoT) and industry 4.0 is also discussed as it leads us to understand that this unification is the next evolution of smart manufacturing and digital technologies. This methodology can lead us to accelerated innovation in applications for overcoming the eventual challenges post Covid in the near future. Also, small-scale/large-scale companies making use of the above research methodology can adhere to six-sigma criterion.

Aim. Development and optimization of enzyme immunoassays for quality control of pseudomonas recombinant vaccine. Materials and methods. Recombinant proteins in intermediate products and for completeness of adsorption control were detected in sandwich immunoassay using specific polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. Detection of the antigen in the vaccine was carried out on the residual amount of antibodies specific to toxoid or OprF that did not bind to the vaccine preparation during the preincubation. Results. ELISAs have been developed and optimized for the quantitative determination of the components (toxoid and membrane protein OprF) of the Pseudomonas recombinant vaccine during the production process. It has been established that: the methods are specific for the determination of toxoid and OprF, the quantitative limit determination has acceptable reliability, the possibility of choosing interpolation of the calibration dependence within the analytical area is shown, the accuracy and precision meets the acceptance criteria, the technique is stable under the conditions of the analysis. Conclusion. Methods can be used to control the quality of the drug during its developing and storage.

The problem of quality control of agricultural machinery parts by means of dynamic non-destructive methods of impact indentation of conical shape indenters is considered. Quality of the crucial parts is considered from the point of view of a set of mechanical characteristics that determine the strength, hardness, wear resistance and deformability. These characteristics must be known and be able to control on all the details promptly and accurately both in the manufacturing process and in operation. The mechanical characteristics of metals are stochastic in nature. For this purpose, an impact indentation device was developed, and the method based on probabilistic laws of dispersion of mechanical characteristics is obtained.

Abstract We report results of a quality-control survey of radioimmunoassay (RIA) of eight analytes, participated in by 249 laboratories of various types throughout Japan. For the purpose of the external control survey, lyophilized specimens containing two different concentrations of each analyte were sent to the participating laboratories, which supplied both their assay values and their raw data for the standard curves and for the samples. The individual data for the standard curve were analyzed by the RIA data-processing program described by Faden and Rodbard. The precision profile obtained for the individual assay was used as the estimate of the quality of each assay. Although there was a wide scatter in assay values, the quality of the assay by the individual laboratories was not the major contributor to this scattering, because the values they reported for the assays and precision profiles of the standard curves were almost identical with those obtained from the kit manufacturers. When the reported assay values were analyzed according to the brand of kits, by analysis of variance, the treatment mean square due to difference in the make of the kits significantly exceeded the error mean square due to "within-kit" variation in the assay of insulin, thyroxin, thyrotropin, cortisol, gastrin, and digoxin. The CVs for "between-kit," "within-kit," "between-assay" and "within-assay" variations (the latter two aspects were studied in a representative laboratory, for convenience of comparison) were about 20, 15, 13, and 7%, respectively. Because the observed within-kit variation is of almost the same magnitude as that expected from the combination of within-assay and between-assay variation, the skill of the users probably was equal and the accuracy and precision of the kits probably had the greatest impact on assay variation. This survey also emphasizes the criteria for commercially available RIA kits.

Internet of things (IoT) is a concept of providing uniquely identifiable objects connectivity to the internet. Under the roof of IoT, it is predicted that above 28 billion devices will be connected to the internet by the year 2020. When billions of things connect, it will be difficult to manage and analyze huge amount of data as each object will send and retrieve data. Smart manufacturing is an emerging concept where the manufacturing process is supported by technology and the required information is made available during the manufacturing process to get the flexibility and the product as per customer changing needs. Internet of things (IoT) may provide a good platform to enhance the manufacturing process into smart manufacturing. The advantages of smart manufacturing include the higher quality of a product, improved productivity, increased energy efficiency, enhanced scalability in manufacturing process, etc. This chapter presents in depth the IoT and smart manufacturing concepts, their requirements, relevance, and available solutions.

Abstract Objectives Quality control of ultrasonography markers is necessary to ensure greater efficacy of prenatal aneuploidy screening. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of the crown-rump length (CRL) and nuchal translucence (NT) measurement accuracy by the laboratory according to quality indicators. Methods Retrospective observational study on 4,908 single-foetus pregnant women who underwent prenatal aneuploidy screening in the first trimester of pregnancy. Euploid foetuses with CRL between 45 and 84 mm were included, while those with NT≥3.5 mm were excluded. CRL measurement was considered to be accurate if the median multiples of the median (MoM) for pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) was between 0.90 and 1.10. Fifteen sonographers participated in the study, six of whom comprised the control group. Systematic error for a sonographer was considered when CRL measurement was greater than ±2 mm with respect to the control group. Quality for NT was assured by means of the WHIRI method and each sonographer cumulative sum control chart (CUSUM). Results For CRL accuracy, five sonographers underestimated the measurements, while another four overestimated them, with no statistical differences. For smaller sized foetuses, all sonographers met the established specifications. Regarding NT control, three sonographers did not meet the quality criteria for the median MoM. All sonographers met the specifications for the logarithmic standard deviation of the NT MoM levels. Thirteen sonographers met the CUSUM specifications. Conclusions Evaluation of a quality control of ultrasonography parameters by laboratory professionals is necessary to avoid under- or overestimation tendencies for CRL and NT measurements. CUSUM is a useful tool for the immediate correction of errors in NT measurements.

Testing the quality of manufactured products based on their sound expression is becoming popular nowadays. To maintain low production costs, the testing is processed at the end of the assembly line. Such measurements are affected considerably by the factory noise even though they are performed in anechoic chambers. Before designing the quality control algorithm based on a convolutional neural network, we do not know the influence of the factory noise on the success rate of the algorithm that can potentially be obtained. Therefore, this contribution addresses this problem. The experiments were undertaken on a synthetic dataset of heat, ventilation, and air-conditioning devices. The results show that classification accuracy of the decision-making algorithm declines more rapidly at a high level of environmental noise.
