This article provides an overview about the main facts and analytical options in the domain of determiners and quantifiers in Spanish. It covers the main classification of determiners and their basic syntactic and semantic properties (§1), the differences in behaviour between quantifiers and determiners in the strict sense (§2), the notion of definiteness and the contrasts in the use of the definite and indefinite articles (§3), the notion of specificity (§4) and the main types of quantifiers and how they can be identified (§5). In terms of analytical problems, it discusses whether determiners should be considered heads or not (§6), the areas within the determiner and quantifier domain (§7), the nature of the indefinite article as an element that shares properties with existential quantifiers (§8), the problems posed by proper names (§9) and the possible existence of phonologically null determiners in Spanish (§10). Conclusions are presented in §11.

The article deals with the dynamic and evolutionary processes of eponymous terms formation in medicine in the systems of English and Ukrainian languages. The aim of the work is to systematize medical propriatives on the basis of such defining features as denotative-characteristic, etymological-word-forming and functional features. Methods and techniques adopted in onomastics and stylistics were used, such as: textual and stylistic analysis, classification of onomastic material, structural, etymological and word-formation analysis, analysis of variants of names, synthesis and identification of patterns. The research focuses on lexical and semantic features and structural features of medical terms with an onymic component. The scientific research of domestic and foreign researchers on the presence or absence of a clear boundary between common and proper names is analyzed. The ways of origin of propriatives and ways of forming a layer of onymic medical vocabulary are outlined. Based on the samples of eponymous terms in accordance with the fields of medicine, in particular rheumatology and neurology, anatomy and clinical nomenclature, the characteristics of dynamic and evolutionary processes in each of the subsystems is presented: quantitative ratio data are given, ways and methods of formation are identified, the role and place of eponyms in medical phenomena and objects are determined, the structural features of these terminological units are described. Much attention is paid to the process of transforming proper names into common words. The processes of transition of proper names into common names, which occur in medical terminology, differences of propriatives and appellates in functions, properties, mechanism of development, essence and linguistic features, context, etymology and translation are studied.

In case of bilingual speakers, proper names undergo different transformations, depending on the contextual character of a manifestation of meanings, “the relationship between the proper name and the denoted object being temporary, dependent on the verbal and situational context” (Tomescu 1998: 1). Within the scope of the current economic migration of Romanians to Spain and Italy, the names of Romanian people have undergone various modifications under the influence of Spanish and Italian onomastics. In the present work, the performance of two main tasks is described: an analysis of the interferences which emerge within communication, in case of the proper names of Romanian people who have emigrated to Spain and Italy; and classification of the proper names of new-born children within Romanian families that have settled in these countries.

The aim of this article is to discuss the formation of toponyms derived from various kinds of appellatives originating from personal names of the southern part of Lithuania – South Highlands (Lith. Pietų Aukštaitija). This is one of the semantic groups of toponyms, differentiating in specificity and meaning from the base words (toponyms consist of appellative personal names). Research into toponyms of appellative personal names reveals how proper names reflect the worldview of the residents of the aforementioned region. The material for the article was collected from the geoinformation data base of Lithuanian toponyms (LVvGDB). To explain the origin of toponyms with reference to the base words, the dictionary of Lithuanian surnames (Lith. LPŽe), the dictionary of the Lithuanian language (Lith. LKŽe), geoinformation data base of Lithuanian toponyms (LVvGDB) were employed. Focusing on word-formation under the structural-grammatical classification of hydronyms developed by Aleksandras Vanagas, the toponyms of each group are divided into primary and secondary. Ethnonyms are classified as primary, derivatives, composites and compounds.

In Lithuania, research on proper names of animals takes a relatively small part of onomastics. In addition, academic papers on zoonyms are rather scarce. It is most appropriate to begin an analysis of dog names from the motivation of name choices and its distribution, thus revealing the overall picture of Lithuanian proper names of animals. The aim of this paper is to investigate the motivation of the choice of dog names in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and to determine the prevalent naming tendencies at that time. The names were collected by Jan Ostroróg in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. First of all, 313 dog names were divided into names of clear, not quite clear, and unclear motivation on the basis of Milda Norkaitienė’s classification of animal names, which was adapted for the dog names by Daiva Sinkevičiūtė. Division of the dog names collected by J. Ostroróg in the Polish– Lithuanian Commonwealth into groups according to the above-mentioned classification shows that the causes and trends of dog naming in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were similar to the present ones: a contemporary classification of dog names with a clear motivation is perfectly suitable for the analysis of dog names from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. However, there are some differences in the naming process, because a new group of dog names emerged in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: names motivated by the function of the dog during hunting. The reason for this is probably specific names: all collected names belonged to hunting dogs. There is also another difference: in the present-day Lithuanian language, the names given to animals, including dogs, are mostly based on an animal’s physical features, while in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries dog names were predominantly based on their temper: the character, behaviour, and interests.

The article considers denotative nominative classification of English ideonyms. One thousand English ideonyms selected according to the frequency of use in print and electronic media have provided the material for this research. The topical problems of ideonymics incude establishment of denotative nominative systematization of the relevant proprietary units, which involves their grouping according to the type of the named objects. The denotative nominative classification of ideonyms embraces four divisions: artionyms, i.e. proper names of works of art, which are further divided into imagionyms, sсeneonyms, musiconyms and filmonyms; biblionyms that cover proper names of all written and verbal texts as well as their series and collections; gemeronyms, i.e. proper names of the media, which are divided into pressonyms and electronyms according to the method of transmitting the information and include both radio and television programs of exclusively informational nature rather than those of entertaining or educational character; computeronyms, which absorb all proper names designed to designate different types of computer programs. The poetonymic sphere is understood as a collection of onyms in artistic texts creating a complex and harmonious system existing in any artistic work as a result of their interrelations. This concerns not only literary works but also those in cinematography, computer art, etc., since proper names act in each of them as components of the virtual picture of the world, thus enabling to refer to the existence of not only the poetonymic sphere, but also the virtualonymosphere. Therefore, it can be concluded that ideonyms can be divided into four classes by their correlation with denotate, namely artionyms, biblionyms, gemeronyms and computeronyms, subject to further specification. Separate terms have been created for ideonyms of the first and second specification levels whereas descriptive terminology is applied for further subdivisions. Each of the analyzed divisions has its own specific functioning, both structural and semantic, which makes further intvestigation in this direction relevant.

Main Trends in the Study of Ukrainian Surnames (Late Seventeenth – Early Twenty-First Centuries): I. The Achievements of Ukrainian OnomasticiansThis article analyses main trends in the study of Ukrainian surnames from the period between the late seventeenth and the early twenty-first centuries. It points out the topicality of research on regional anthroponymy and its contribution to the development of studies on dialects, lexis, word formation and other issues in linguistics. Proper names contain a wealth of linguistic and historical information on realities of a nation or a particular region. The analysed material demonstrates that scholars investigating Ukrainian surnames have devoted considerable attention to the formation and development of the Ukrainian anthroponymic system, the functioning of anthroponyms in language, and the origin and semantics of personal names. They have identified the main stages in the formation of Ukrainian surnames and outlined the development of their role as a sign common to all members of a family, focusing in particular on the processes that have fostered the formation and development of the Ukrainian surname system. They have also examined the lexical basis of surnames, and identified the most productive lexical groups in this regard. The article presents the state of research on the classification of Ukrainian surnames according to their motivation features and means of their formation. It also sketches the prospects of further studies on Ukrainian anthroponomy. It points out that as yet there is no full register of Ukrainian surnames, and that some of the materials collected in particular regions have only been presented in dissertations and are often kept in private files of the researchers. Główne kierunki badań nad ukraińskimi nazwiskami (koniec XVII – początek XXI wieku): I. Dorobek ukraińskich onomastówArtykuł dotyczy analizy głównych kierunków w badaniach nad ukraińskimi nazwiskami z okresu od końca XVII do początków XXI wieku.
