The survey aims to investigate distance students’ perceptions of the efficacy of the online catalogue as a tool for information retrieval at the University of Zambia. A survey research design has been adopted in the study. Convenient sampling method was used to select 160 distance students. A structured questionnaire was developed and distributed to undergraduate distance students. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyse quantitative data into frequencies and percentages. The study established majority of distance students rarely used the online public access catalogue in exploiting the resources in the university library. Instead they employed shelf-to-shelf browsing in information searching and retrieval skills. Lack of proper orientation and user education were identified as major factors militating against their maximum utilization and exploitation of the resources in the university library. The findings of the study will inform stakeholders on how best to turn around the negative trends of OPAC.

Library as a centre for information resources is the backbone of the progress of an educational institution. Imbalance between the use of information retrieval system facilities advance search and a quick search of the catalogue are very  common in a search. This study was aimed to know and to describe how the precision of information retrieval system by using title field and subject on OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) ) at Muhammaddiyah University Library of Bengkulu is effective as an information retrieval system. This study was a quantitative descriptive study using analytical methods. The technique of data collection in  this study was by using trace observation on the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). The study was carried out by using the title of the names of study programs and the subject to study program as the study sample a mounted to 206. Sample were taken by using purposive sampling techniques. The result of the study showed that search using advanced search features by using the section title of sociology subject obtained a precision marks of 0,98 while the use of advanced search features by using biology education subject obtainrd precision mark of 0,66. The use of quick search feature by using the sociology subjects get a precision marks of 0,98 while the use of quick search feature by using biology education subject obtained a precision marks of 0,99. The testing on the four search shows that the quick search and advanced search features in the title and subject are in the average range of 0,90 so it is said that the search system of OPAC at Muhammadiyah University Library of Bengkulu is effective as an information retrieval system.

Purpose This empirical study aims to measure the performance of electronic service quality and related infrastructure in a state university library and suggests the strategies for further improvement based on this study. Design/methodology/approach The data collection was done through a survey questionnaire based on the 22 attributes of four e-Service quality dimensions rated on five-point Likert scale. The sample population consisted of 239 respondents comprising of different categories of users of university library. Findings The results of this study indicated that all four dimensions rated by the users fell between mean score 3 to 4 (good), the highest score was received in dimension online public access catalogue (OPAC) and internet service with followed by Library website, Library electronic equipment’s and e-User education. Out of total 22 e-Service quality attributes, none of the attributes received score above 4 (excellent), which indicates that still university library need to improve the current performance of e-Service quality and to take remedial steps to enhance the existing e-services and infrastructure. Practical implications Findings from this study could assist university library authority to sustain and enhance performance of e-Services that could achieve the core journey of the modern university libraries. Originality/value This study was the first endeavour for measurement of the performance of e-Service quality and related infrastructure of federal university libraries in India.

This article reviews the value of federal depository document titles, often underutilized as sources of research, and discusses reasons why many of them are worth cataloging. Several approaches to cataloging these titles to make them more readily accessible are profiled. The Adelphi University Library has devised a system, relying on Boolean logic and using an online public access catalog (OPAC), to choose which depository titles are worth cataloging because of their scholarly research value. This has resulted in the enrichment and expansion of the collection of readily available research titles and has contributed significantly to the library’s permanent collection development program.

All the records in the four annual literature reviews thus far published are scheduled to be integrated into the online database of Publishing, Books & Reading in Sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately, access to the database remains temporarily unavailable. It is currently still in the process of being relaunched by its new host institution, Kwara State University Library in Nigeria (and see also the 2015 press release at http://www.hanszell.co.uk/Site/PDFs/Press%20release.pdf) Due to a number of persistent technical problems relating to metadata mapping and software functionality, as well as ongoing software development and data transfer issues, there have been serious delays in the migration of the database. However, the new hosts hope that remaining problems and issues can now be resolved shortly, and that they will be able to relaunch the database sometime early in 2019 on a more dynamic, Drupal-based open source content management platform. The first batch of updates and over 500 entirely new records will then also be added to the database. Meantime the accompanying collection of books, monograph series, journals, articles, and other documents on publishing and book development in Sub-Saharan Africa, from 1996 to 2014, donated by Hans Zell to Kwara State University Library in 2015 is now accessible at the recipient library. This is a continuation of an earlier collection and archive (for the 1960-1995 period) that was donated to the African Publishers Network/APNET in Harare in 1995. The 1996-2014 collection has now been fully catalogued and records have been created for each item and integrated in KWASU’s Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). A complete listing and inventory of the collection (which includes unpublished and archival material) can be found at http://kwasu.edu.ng/library/pbrssa.html. This page also includes a user guide, and an online form to register for access to and use of the collection. Access is free to any bona fide scholar or researcher from around the globe. The purpose of this paper was to determine the extent towhich undergraduates atBenue State University are aware of the OPAC, the extent of usage, the level of satisfaction derived from the usage and challengesencountered in the use of OPAC in the universitylibrary. The study was guided by four specific objectives and four research questions. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The populationconsisted of 9,864 undergraduate who registered with the library during 2017/2018 academic session. The sample sizewas 384 undergraduate students.Data was collected through a self-structured questionnaire.The data collected were analysed using frequency, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Thefindings revealedthat most of therespondents-232 (60.4%)-were not aware of OPAC services,only 152 (39.6%) respondents indicated theirawarenessof OPAC in retrievingneededlibrary materials. The study also showedthat the extent of OPAC use by undergraduateswas to a low extent and the students were dissatisfied with OPAC services; thattheundergraduates encountered several challenges which led to the low usage and dissatisfaction with the OPAC ofthe Benue State University Library. The study concludedthatthe creation of the OPACwas to facilitate retrieving information resources that had been acquired and organisedby the university library. However, poor awareness, improper orientation/training of studentsamong others have posedgreat challenge for its effective usage.The study therefore recommended that all the identified challenges be tackled by the university library management in order to enhance OPAC usage by thestudents.

AbstractThis study aims to determine what information needs and how information seeking behavior of students of the Department of Indonesian Language Education at Bung Hatta University. The method used in this research is descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques were carried out by direct interviews with Indonesian Language Education Department students who were working on a thesis in the room of the Bung Hatta University Library thesis based on the interview grid provided by using a tool in the form of a Vivo Y83 pen as a tool. interview recorder. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded as follows. First, students of the Indonesian Language Education Department need information sources such as research journals, books, resource persons, and the internet in tracing information by considering the publication year. the collections in the Bung Hatta University library can be categorized as incomplete. Second, Indonesian Language Education Department students will seek information in other university libraries, and the Regional Library if the information needed cannot be found at the Bung Hatta University Library and visit the reading room and thesis room in information retrieval. OPAC Information Search tool (Online Public Access Catalog) has been used well in information retrieval at the Bung Hatta University Library so that the time needed to search for information can be shortened, namely 1 to 2 hours. Before searching for information, informants will record what things will be traced so that the information found can be used and according to needs.Keywords: information needs, information seeking behavior

ABSTRACT The study investigated the perceived impact of OPAC on effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi. The study looked at the perceived impact of OPAC on effective retrieval of information resources, purpose of utilizing OPAC by postgraduate students, search strategies used by postgraduate students for effective retrieval of information resources, challenges as well as strategies to enhance the use of OPAC by postgraduate student for effective retrieval of resources. Five (5) objectives with corresponding research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was made up of 38 postgraduate students who are registered with Benue State University Library. However, the census sampling was adopted for the study due to the small nature of the population. The instrument for data collection was self-structured questionnaire titled “Perceived Impact of OPAC on Information Retrieval Questionnaire” (PIOPACIRQ) which was validated by experts and a reliability coefficient of 0.947 was obtained. Data was collected and analyzed using frequent count and means. Findings of the study revealed that, there is a high perceived impact of OPAC on effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi. Finding also revealed that, postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi utilize OPAC for various purposes such as to know the available resources in the university library, to locate books by author, title and subject, assists in obtaining books from the university library, among others. Finding also revealed the search strategies used by postgraduate students for effective retrieval of information resources in Benue State University Makurdi to include by author, title, subject and edition. The study further revealed the challenges hindering the use of OPAC for effective retrieval of information resources in Benue State University, Makurdi to include: lack of skilled library professionals to assists students, lack of orientation from library staff, lack of time to retrieve the vast information, slow internet connectivity speed, among others. Findings finally revealed some key strategies to enhance the use of OPAC for effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi which include: employment of skilled/competent library staff, need to design user-friendly OPAC template, improvement of internet connectivity speed, and organizing user education program to orientate postgraduate students on the use of OPAC, among others. Recommendations were also made based on the findings of the study.
