Objective: to verify measures used in intensive care units to prevent infection related to health care. Methods: integrative review based on the data sources LILACS, SCOPUS, PubMed Central, Science Direct, Web of Science and CINAHL, whose descriptors used were: Infection Control and Intensive Care Units. Sample consisting of 146 studies. Results: thematic categories related to the relevant infection prevention measures were listed, developed in Intensive Care Units: bloodstream infection prevention measures, assistance-related pneumonia prevention measures, urinary tract infection prevention measure and preventive measures associated with general care. Conclusion: among the established thematic categories, care with skin preparation, oral hygiene, correct handling of the urinary catheter and daily bath with antiseptic were most frequently identified.

An important role of public health agencies is to define the unacceptable. This concept has particular relevance for healthcare-associated infections. Evidence indicates that, with focused efforts, these once-formidable infections can be greatly reduced in number, leading to a new normal for healthcare-associated infections as rare, unacceptable events.

Subject Plans for gradual reopening in Chile. Significance On April 24, President Sebastian Pinera announced the country’s Safe Return Plan under which it will transition to the “new normal”, following a relatively successful targeted lockdown strategy to control the COVID-19 outbreak. The government stresses that the coronavirus will affect daily life for the foreseeable future but is seeking to reopen schools and the economy while maintaining infection prevention measures. Impacts Dampened by the pandemic, social protests are likely to gather force again as restrictions are lifted. Reopening businesses would support the Central Bank’s forecast that the economy will pick up in the third quarter. Successful handling of the pandemic offers Pinera a chance to improve his battered image.

Introduction During the posterior approach to the hip, the short external rotators are detached and secured with stay sutures. At the time of definitive closure, some surgeons incorporate the initial sutures into their repair while others discard for fresh sutures, presumably as an infection prevention measure. We have conducted a pilot study to investigate whether the incorporation of the primary stay sutures may constitute an infection risk to the patient undergoing a total hip replacement through the posterior approach. Materials and methods The pilot study was conducted between August 2014 and June 2015. A pair of suture specimens were sent from 25 patients to microbiology, 1 set of primary stay sutures and 1 set of control sutures. All operations were carried out by the senior author through a posterior approach. Results All specimens were analysed for bacterial and fungal growth, using extended cultures. 1 set of primary sutures had a positive growth, likely from skin contamination; 1 set of control sutures also had a positive growth, likely from environmental contamination. Conclusions Our pilot study suggests that the practice of incorporating the primary stay sutures for definitive soft tissue repair of the short external rotators, rather than exchanging them for new sutures, can be deemed safe.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are being recommended as an infection prevention measure for COVID-19. Washing hands is a simple matter to eliminate and minimize germs on the hands with water and by adding certain ingredients, the use of hand sanitizer becomes must in recent circumstances. We have developed reliable and eco-friendly process for the synthesis of hand sanitizer gel that is a really useful tool in the fight against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Considering scanty literature available on the use of custard apple peel and seed for preparation of hand sanitizer gel, present study was undertaken to evaluate effect of hand sanitizer from custard apple peel and seed extract. The antimicrobial activity of the formulated gel was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii, Salmonella typhimurinum and Shigella sonnei by The Quality Assurance and Testing Center 3 (QUATEST 3) in Ho Chi Minh city, Viet Nam.
