This study was undertaken to find ways of reducing the time taken by goats tobegin to eat an edible feed that they have not previously encountered. Experiment 1demonstrated that the time taken for goats (7-8 months old) to ingest an unfamiliar feed(rice straw) was shorter (4 days) when it was first offered to them in the presence offamiliar positive cues (the odor or flavor of juices extracted from previously eaten,nutritionally beneficial grasses), than if it was offered in the absence of such cues (10 days).In contrast, when the feed was offered in the presence of the odor of parasitised goat feces,the time to first ingestion was extended to 20 days. Experiment 2 showed that when sixmonthold goats were exposed to feeds they had not experienced previously (rice straw orrice bran) they did not ingest these feeds in less than 7 days. However, they commencedingesting these feeds immediately if they had been exposed to them, prior to weaning, inthe presence of their mother or another adult goat. Application of the principles of feedingbehavior, as illustrated by the present studies, to goats in Vietnam may improve theirproduction, especially when diets are changed frequently and include both familiar andunfamiliar materials.Keywords: Behavior; Diet selection; Flavor; Neophobia; Social facilitation; Goat.

Forage is the main feed of buffalo in smallholder farms. The need of forage will increase along to the increased demand of buffalo population. Buffaloes are kept as semi-intensive in natural grassland, house yard and integrated with agricultural land. Forages availability for buffalos are low in the dry season. The aim of this research is to measure the potential forage and the strategy for self-sufficiency of forage for buffalo in Province of Banten. The research was conducted in buffalo pasture (natural and integrated with paddy fields) managed by smallholder farmers in Lebak and Serang Regencies, Banten Province. Parameters measured include: (1) botanical composition of forage, (2) forage carrying capacity, (3) types of feed crops in buffalo pastures, (4) quality of silage and hay products from buffalo pasture. The results showed that botanical composition was varied with predominant vegetation dominance was grasses (56.55-95.94%), low and varied carrying capacity (0.29 ± 0.17 - 0.98 ± 0.39 AU/ha), 24 types of forage plant were found which are potential as buffalo feed. Silage and hay from buffalo grassland were potential as feed resources in the dry season. Keywords: buffalo, natural grassland, self-sufficient feed, smallholder

The study was conducted at the Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, Mathura; under the division nutrition feed resources and products technology for the study of farm rearing condition. A total of 479 milk samples were collected from field and farm rearing condition 222 single (field 28 and farm 194), twins 230 (field 66 and farm 164) and triplets 27 (field 08 and farm 19) milk samples. The overall average calcium content of all above samples in all rearing and births was 0.1455±0.0019 per cent. Phosphorus content was significantly greater in farm samples than field rearing samples in all multiple births. Potassium percentage in the milk of Jamunapari goat breed under field and farm rearing conditions in single, twins and triplets birth was found to be 0.113±0.0008 and 0.113±0.0008, 0.111±0.0007 and 0.111±0.0008 and 0.107±0.0008 and 0.109±0.0008 respectively. The highest magnesium, chloride and selenium content were observed in single birth samples under field as well as farm rearing samples. Multiple births had conspicuous effects on milk quality of goats under study.
