This article analyses the current usage of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in HEIs. First, a literature review is performed to identify and classify the recent developments in the area and to characterize the most used platforms and courses. Following this, an analysis of MOOCs offered by some HEIs is carried out to characterize and compare the courses available in the platforms. Concerning the main findings, the literature reveals that usage of MOOCs has been growing in recent years and that Coursera and EdX are the two main platforms used. The analysis of MOOCs available in those platforms shows that the number of universities using them and the number of courses offered have been increasing. The comparison between the courses available through the above-mentioned platforms shows that EdX is more interdisciplinary. The outcomes of this article are valuable for researchers on ICT use in HEI and may help professors implementing MOOCs in their own environment.

Abstract Within the context of bourgeoning institutions that rank higher education institutions, this paper examines the merits and demerits of university rankings and diverse ranking methodologies. It explores and presents recent developments and diversification of international rankings and highlights their general trend towards more broadly balanced and multidimensional criteria. The paper concludes that like any other complex endeavour, rankings have their pros and cons but the latter does not justify their abandonment. What is required is public education that builds a discerning user who can optimally gain from the use of rankings while avoiding their pitfalls. The original version of this article was first published in the UNESCO volume Rankings and Accountability in Higher Education: Uses and Misuses (2013) Paris: UNESCO.

The paper presents an analysis of education internationalization as a leading direction in the development of higher education in the context of globalization. The author considers domestic and foreign theories of education internationalization, highlighting its political, economic, demographic and pedagogical aspects, which proves the multidimensional nature of this scientific and educational phenomenon. The need to strengthen Russias geopolitical influence in the world as well as strengthen the competitive advantages of Russian education actualizes research interest in the successful experience of foreign countries in the field of education internationalization and the possibility of its use in Russian universities. The scientific novelty and theoretical significance of the research lies in the substantiation and characterization of the scientific and methodological conditions for adapting the foreign experience of education internationalization. The author proves that scientific and methodological conditions for adapting foreign experience of education internationalization include theoretical and methodological conditions, organizational and methodological conditions, educational, methodological and psychological conditions. Comprehensive implementation of the identified conditions allows implementing of the international dimension in the educational, research and management activities of higher education institutions. The practical significance of the research is determined by the possibility of using the results obtained in the development of international activities of higher education institutions, in the integration of modern tools for higher education internationalization, taking into account Russian academic and scientific traditions.

This study clarifies the rationale for offering overseas programmes as an internationalization strategy by Taiwanese higher education institutions through an analysis of related university documents and interview data. In doing so, this study highlights how institutional goals and characteristics, as well as social and cultural backgrounds, affect the internationalization of higher education based on the following two points. First, in addition to the pursuit of academic excellence and expanding student markets, university strategies are based on its particular history, resources, development goals, and orientation. Second, although different strategies were observed among the examined universities, the Chinese element and the pluralistic value of Taiwanese society have influenced the overseas programmes offered by Taiwanese universities. This paper argues that instead of merely adopting the international standard or pursuing academic excellence, it is essential for Taiwanese universities to implement internationalization strategies in order to determine their meaning and purpose in the context of Taiwanese higher education.

Most countries today are facing the challenge of trying to increase enrolment in higher education but to do so in ways that are affordable and sustainable and in which increased access represents a reasonable chance of ultimate success. The increasing ubiquity and flexibility of technology creates multiple avenues for institutions to open access to higher education and for students to access this provision. This has yielded a steady increase in cross-border/transnational provisions for higher education. In this, the developing countries of Africa have tended to be consumers of services and materials rather than producers. The potential of TDL in reaching large numbers of people is obvious, but there are still a number of militating factors that need to be addressed if this potential is to be fully realised. This chapter explores some of the reservations that have existed among African higher education institutions, until recently, regarding transnational provisions, and then looks at why this is now changing, with examples of recent developments, and reflects on some lessons for how meaningful transnational engagement can be facilitated.

Cheating in academics has been on the increase and it reflects a lack of integrity on the part of students. If no efforts are made to prevent academic misconduct/dishonesty, it will contribute to the image and standing of higher education institutions (HEIs). Cheating is not only an ethical concern, but it also leads to lesser knowledge and competencies acquisition. Equally, when students cheat the faculty feel cheated and efforts wasted. The resultant may be low morale of educators which is dangerous. Hence, HEIs are making efforts to reduce cheating and strengthen academic integrity (AI) through polices, rules, and procedures. Nevertheless, the focus seems to be more on bolting the stable after the horse has left or is largely administrative in nature. Therefore, adopting a mixed method approach the core of this chapter is to focus on preventing cheating through academic approach. The objective is to discuss how student-centered teaching strategies can prevent academic misconduct with focus on management disciple.

This article provides an overview of recent developments in the UK aimed at building learning alliances between universities and other higher education institutions, and employers. It begins by reviewing briefly the fuller range of types of linkages which can and do exist between higher education and industry, and what is driving them, and then focuses more specifically on teaching and the curriculum. The article exemplifies something of the plethora of effective linkages being developed in the UK, paying particular attention to the University of Warwick model, and discusses the factors which make success more likely. It also discusses the costs and benefits of linkage programmes for the interested parties. The article concludes by raising a variety of key issues which are currently presented by university—industry partnerships, and in the light of this discussion sets out some thoughts on future prospects for linkage programmes. While these latter speculations are made for the UK, it is likely that they will be relevant for many other countries undergoing similar sea-changes concerning the nature of work and training.
