PurposeConsumers in India are increasingly using mobile payment systems (MPSs) to make online and offline payments. Digital payment applications are gradually being used as surrogates for cash, checks and plastic money. The motive behind this research is to analyze the different antecedents that impact the users' willingness to continue using the MPS in India.Design/methodology/approachAn extensive study of the literature review supports the creation of a framework that describes the continuance intention of using MPS. Data from a survey of 612 respondents from India were collected to assess the research model. The study used partial least squares (PLS)–structural equation modeling (SEM) technique to empirically validate the framework developed.FindingsThe outcomes of the research suggest that service quality, attitude, effort expectancy and perceived risk act as influencing antecedents of continuance intention to use MPS. Determinants like perceived trust, convenience and social value have no influence on users' continuance intention. SEM analysis has verified the proposed model, which explains 50.7% of the variance of the users' continuance intention of using MPSs.Research limitations/implicationsThe research is built upon cross-sectional data carried out in India. Hence, the outcomes of the study are limited to this region only.Practical implicationsEngaging with the consumers for a long time and enabling their continuance usage are extremely important for firms offering mobile payment services. The managerial implications provide insights into the different ways to capture new business opportunities to the firms rendering mobile payment services in the wake of changing consumer behavior.Originality/valueThis research tries to analyze users' continuance intention to use MPS in India. Although many research studies have investigated the willingness of the individuals to adopt novel technology in different frameworks, there are hardly any empirical studies carried out to analyze the antecedents of users' continuance intention to use MPSs.

This study investigates the factors that determine user intention to continue using mobile payment application, taking as its case an Indonesian application called OVO. It applies the technology acceptance model by examining continuance intention to use (CITU) of OVO, economic value, satisfaction, gender difference, and perceived risk as the constructs. This study finds that economic value is significant predictor of CITU, but of a lower magnitude when the application was perceived as having a high level of risk. Satisfaction was significantly associated with CITU, particularly amongst users who perceived OVO as having a high level of risk. Although economic value and satisfaction influenced CITU amongst both male and female respondents, their influence was greatest amongst the former.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the antecedents of the behavioral intention and adoption of mobile payment services like m-wallets and m-banking by users in India. This is done by examining the diffusion of mobile payment technology within an extended framework of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. The study attempts to extend the UTAUT model further by introducing three more constructs, namely- perceived cost, perceived risk and demonetization effect and analyzes the impact of demonetization that happened in India from November 8, 2016 to December 30, 2016 on the mobile payment service adoption process. Demonetization event is a case in point to assess whether forced adoption breaks the normal diffusion process or lends support to the same in the long term.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted in order to gauge the intention behind the adoption of mobile payment modes by users in India. The questionnaire was administered online solely and 880 responses were received within a period of 20 days from February 3, 2017, to February 23, 2017, using Google Forms as a medium. Usable responses were 640. The study adopted partial least square based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique to analyze the relation between latent variables: performance expectation, effort expectation, social influence, facilitating conditions, perceived cost, perceived risk, demonetization effect, behavioral intention and usage. For this purpose, SmartPLS3.0 software was used to create path diagrams and calculate estimate the significance of factor loadings using the bootstrap technique.FindingsThe key results indicates that behavioral intention, demonetization and facilitating conditions have a positive and significant impact on the adoption of mobile payment services in India. Overall, Model 3, which was extended UTAUT model, was observed to be a better model in explaining the antecedents of behavioral intention and usage. In addition to UTAUT antecedents, perceived cost and perceived risk proved to have additional explanatory power as antecedents of behavioral intention. Age acts as a moderating variable consistently across three models, implying that younger users give more importance to effortless interface of mobile payment services and get more influenced by peers and society that shapes their intention to use mobile payment services.Originality/valueIt is first of its kind attempt to assess the role of Demonetization in examining the antecedents of behavioral intention and adoption of mobile payment services by users in India under an extended UTAUT model. This study comprehensively examined the impact of forced adoption of mobile payment services by users in India in a natural setting provided by demonetization event that took place in India by conducting a primary survey right itself in the month of February, 2017 to get first hand response from the Indian users.

To be effectively deployed, a mobile payment (m-payment) system must be provided by e-merchants and accepted by e-consumers. Although the problem of acceptance of m-payment systems by e-consumers has been widely researched, there are few studies about what actually motivates e-merchants to adopt and deploy these systems in their businesses in the first place. The goal of this research was to discover the behavioral intentions of e-merchants to adopt and deploy an m-payment system. The interviews approach was applied to 347 e-merchants randomly selected from among the whole population of 47,457 independent business units selling goods on-line in Poland. The PLS-SEM method was applied to determine the relationship between variables. Unexpectedly, perceived risk was not a significant factor influencing e-merchants' intention to adopt an m-payment system. The e-merchants’ behavioral intention was significantly impacted by the expected usefulness, perceived ease of deployment and use, perceived cost and price, and hedonic motivation.

The rapid deployment of mobile devices and the development of mobile services and applications require to address the mobile information security from the human side. This study was aimed at identifying factors influencing people's perception of mobile information security, to investigate the impact of these factors and to facilitate related service design. A survey was conducted and analyzed with exploratory factor analysis. Five factors were identified, including perceived familiarity, perceived impact, perceived controllability, perceived awareness and perceived possibility. Thereinto, the impact of controllability, impact and familiarity on the adoption of mobile payment was investigated. Impact significantly affected the intention to use, but not the perceived security of payment systems. Control level significantly affected the intention to use and the perceived security. Familiarity was found to have an effect on neither the intention to use nor the perceived security. Related design implications for mobile payment systems were discussed.

Purpose Although perceived risk and usefulness have been identified as two major factors that influence consumer acceptance of an innovative mobile payment (m-payment), relatively few researchers have explored the impact of affective factors on perceived risk and usefulness, and the relationship between perceived risk and usefulness. Also, it is unclear whether there is a difference in the acceptance intention among users across different diffusion stages of this innovation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of positive emotion in consumer acceptance of WeChat payment across time. Design/methodology/approach This study proposed and validated a framework integrating the consumer response system model and the affect heuristic. A total of 484 valid responses were collected through two online surveys at two diffusion stages of WeChat payment technology. The structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Findings The results show that users’ acceptance intention is relatively related to perceived risk, perceived usefulness, and positive emotion. Positive emotion has a strong negative impact on perceived risk and a positive impact on perceived usefulness. Also, perceived usefulness strongly decreases users’ perception of risk. Multigroup analyses find that both positive emotion and perceived risk have significant positive and negative impacts on acceptance intention at the stage of market introduction rather than market growth. Rather, the influence of positive usefulness on acceptance intention is significantly higher at the stage of market growth than at market introduction. Originality/value This study indicates that exploring the role of positive emotion and the moderating effect of diffusion stages in m-payment acceptance provides a more comprehensive understanding of how to achieve a greater acceptance rate of an innovative m-payment.

Saat ini, pengguna mobile payment di Indonesia semakin bertambah dari tahun ke tahun. Hadirnya teknologi yang baru ini menghasilkan perspektif yang berbeda dari laki-laki maupun perempuan. Permasalahan yang ditemukan adalah apakah mobile payment platform berpengaruh pada continuance intention terhadap penggunaan layanan mobile payment berdasarkan model riset yang dibuat oleh Z. Shao, L. Zhang, X. Li dan Y. Guo. Berdasarkan model riset terdapat variabel moderasi gender dan variabel mediasi perceived risk. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan hubungan struktural pengaruh mobile payment platform terhadap penggunaan mobile payment dengan pertimbangan pengaruh variabel moderasi gender dan variabel mediasi perceived risk berdasarkan model riset, mendapatkan cara peningkatan variabel terukur pada model riset, (mobile payment platform, trust in the platform, gender dan perceived risk) yang bisa mempengaruhi penggunaan mobile payment serta mendapatkan variabel lain dalam model riset yang bisa mempengaruhi penggunaan mobile payment. Metode analisis yang digunakan adalah Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), dimana metode ini cocok untuk menampilkan korelasi dari tiap variabel yang diuji. Dalam pengambilan data, kuesioner diberikan kepada 1000 responden dengan gender yang berbeda. Dari hasil analisis diperoleh faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan pengguna terhadap continuance intention pada layanan mobile payment di Indonesia secara signifikan, yakni reputation dengan nilai 8,72 pada perempuan dan 4,32 pada laki-laki, security dengan nilai 4,35 pada perempuan dan 2,82 pada laki-laki. Diharapkan dengan adanya penelitian ini dapat membantu perusahaan penyedia layanan mobile payment dalam mengidentifikasi faktor yang dapat dijadikan pertimbangan dalam pengembangan layanan mobile payment di masa mendatang.
