This paper explores multilingual hospital encounters in which medical professionals and patients do not speak the same language, and where interpreting is facilitated through the use of video technology. The participants use video technology to create an interactional space for interpreting. While video technology affords the participants visual access to each other, and the participants may use embodied actions in interaction, participants in interaction do not necessarily organise their interactional space in ways that secure congruent views of each other. While the participants’ incongruent views of each other may cause problems in the organisation of interaction, the participants rarely discuss the visual setting. This article explores how the participants orient to the visual materiality of the setting and how they use the visual ecology they create, in and through the interaction, to best achieve the multilingual activity of interpreting in hospital encounters.

When people have visual access to the same space, judgments of this shared visual space (shared vista) can facilitate communication and collaboration. This study establishes baseline performance on a shared vista task in real environments and draws comparisons with performance in visually immersive virtual environments. Participants indicated which parts of the scene were visible to an assistant or avatar (simulated person used in virtual environments) and which parts were occluded by a nearby building. Errors increased with increasing distance between the participant and the assistant out to 15 m, and error patterns were similar between real and virtual environments. This similarity is especially interesting given recent reports that environmental geometry is perceived differently in virtual environments than in real environments.

The development of video-enhanced light microscopy (LM) as well as associated image processing and analysis have significantly broadened the scope of investigations which can be undertaken using (LM). Interference/polarization based microscopies can provide high resolution and higher levels of “detectability” especially in unstained living systems. Confocal light microscopy also holds the promise of further improvements in resolution, fluorescence studies, and 3 dimensional reconstruction. Video technology now provides, among other things, a means to detect differences in contrast difficult to detect with the human eye; furthermore, computerized image capture, processing, and analysis can be used to enhance features of interest, average images, subtract background, and provide a quantitative basis to studies of cells, cell features, cell labelling, and so forth. Improvements in video technology, image capture, and cost-effective computer image analysis/processing have contributed to the utility and potential of the various interference and confocal microscopic instrumentation.Electron microscopic technology has made advances as well. Microprocessor control and improved design have contributed to high resolution SEMs which have imaging capability at the molecular level and can operate at a range of accelerating voltages starting at 1KV. Improvements have also been seen in the HVEM and IVEM transmission instruments. As a whole, these advances in LM and EM microscopic technology provide the biologist with an array of information on structure, composition, and function which can be obtained from a single specimen. Corrrelative light microscopic analysis permits examination of living specimens and is critical where the “history” of a cell, cellular components, or labels needs to be known up to the time of chemical or physical fixation. Features such as cytoskeletal elements or gold label as small as 0.01 μm, well below the 0.2 μm limits of LM resolution, can be “detected” and their movement followed by VDIC-LM. Appropriate identification and preparation can then lead to the examination of surface detail and surface label with stereo LV-HR-SEM. Increasing the KV in the HR-SEM while viewing uncoated or thinly coated specimens can provide information from beneath the surface as well as increasing Z contrast so that positive identification of surface and subsurface colloidal gold or other heavy metal labelled/stained material is possible. Further examination of the same cells using stereo HVEM or IVEM provides information on internal ultrastructure and on the relationship of labelled material to cytoskeletal or organellar distribution, A wide variety of investigations can benefit from this correlative approach and a number of instrumentational configurations and preparative pathways can be tailored for the particular study. For a surprisingly small investment in time and technique, it is often possible to clear ambiguities or questions that arise when a finding is presented in the context of only one modality.

Variable success in audiometric assessment of young children with operant conditioning indicates the need for systematic examination of commonly employed techniques. The current study investigated response and reinforcement features of two operant discrimination paradigms with normal I7-month-old children. Findings indicated more responses prior to the onset of habituation when the response task was based on complex central processing skills (localization and coordination of auditory/visual space) versus simple detection. Use of animation in toy reinforcers resulted in more than a twofold increase in the number of subject responses. Results showed no significant difference in response conditioning rate or consistency for the response tasks and forms of reinforcement examined.

Abstract In the present study we explored the focusing of visuospatial attention in subjects practicing and not practicing activities with high attentional demands. Similar to the studies of Castiello and Umiltà (e. g., 1990) , our experimental procedure was a variation of Posner's (1980) basic paradigm for exploring covert orienting of visuospatial attention. In a simple RT-task, a peripheral cue of varying size was presented unilaterally or bilaterally from a central fixation point and followed by a target at different stimulus-onset-asynchronies (SOAs). The target could occur validly inside the cue or invalidly outside the cue with varying spatial relation to its boundary. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and reaction times (RTs) were recorded to target stimuli under the different task conditions. RT and ERP findings showed converging aspects as well as dissociations. Electrophysiological results revealed an amplitude modulation of the ERPs in the early and late Nd time interval at both anterior and posterior scalp sites, which seems to be related to the effects of peripheral informative cues as well as to the attentional expertise. Results were: (1) shorter latency effects confirm the positive-going amplitude enhancement elicited by unilateral peripheral cues and strengthen the criticism against the neutrality of spatially nonpredictive peripheral cueing of all possible target locations which is often presumed in behavioral studies. (2) Longer latency effects show that subjects with attentional expertise modulate the distribution of the attentional resources in the visual space differently than nonexperienced subjects. Skilled practice may lead to minimizing attentional costs by automatizing the use of a span of attention that is adapted to the most frequent task demands and endogenously increases the allocation of resources to cope with less usual attending conditions.

AbstractWWW-based user interface is presented for secure electronic mail service for healthcare users. Using this method, communications between an electronic mail (WWW) server and users (WWW browsers) can be performed securely using Secure Socket Layer protocol-based Hypertext Transfer Protocol (SSL-HTIP). The mail can be encrypted, signed, and sent to the recipients and vice versa on the remote WWW server. The merit of this method is that many healthcare users can use a secure electronic mail system easily and immediately, because SSL-compatible WWW browsers are widely used and this system can be made available simply by installing a WWW-based mail user agent on a mail server. We implemented a WWWbased mail user agent which is compatible with PEM-based secure mail and made it available to about 16,000 healthcare users. We believe this approach is effective in facilitating secure network-based information exchange among medical professionals.

This article is about women and girls and the potential for major changes. I begin with two premises: first, the urethrovaginal gland (UVG) and its secretion, amrita, are critical elements of being a human female; and, second, there is a genetic underpinning to the robustness of UVG activity and its contribution to sexual satisfaction. The anticipation is that, in addition to facilitating women’s sexual satisfaction both through raising awareness and identifying geneticbased pharmaceuticals, we might also modestly enhance medical care and biomedical research endeavors relevant to human female sexual anatomy and physiology. However, there is substantial, almost uniform ignorance, reticence and untoward prejudice among medical professionals-both clinicians and researchers-that has compromised innumerable girls and women. Most important has been the ubiquitous incorrect presumption that the only fluid to pass through-or issue from-the female urethra is urine. The source of the other important urethral effluent, amrita, is the UVG (sometimes known as the Skene gland), but the UVG has most often been considered a fiction, a myth or irrelevant. Thus, its secretion, amrita, has similarly been considered a fiction, myth or irrelevant. Only one venue has openly acknowledged and exploited amrita: the adult movie industry. However, such endorsement predictably added to the rationales for making light of or ignoring this aspect of femininity.

Raymond Bellour describes how his interest in video art grew out of his personal friendship with Thierry Kuntzel and the latter’s growing interest in experimental filmmaking using the new technology, and how this interest prompted him to seek to understand how the new medium was leading to a modification of perception. He goes on to explain how video technology enables the production of images that escape the natural conditions deemed to constrain photography, also emphasizing the influence of painting on video art.
