This commentary describes the experience of attending RDAP 2020 remotely after the author’s trip cancellation due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. The author describes the highs and lows of the remote viewing experience, and the potential future landscape of virtual conferences and remote attendance. Maintaining networking and casual conversation during a virtual conference is an area that needs improvement but has potential. Takeaways from several conference sessions, including the keynote speaker, are also included along with discussion of how the author learned valuable information or could apply the topics to her own work.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to reconsider the way we teach our students. The inability of UK-based lecturers to deliver via traditional lecture-based courses in China (due to ongoing travel restrictions) has been an obstacle to overcome but also an opportunity to investigate innovative remote-teaching methods. Here we review a case study based on teaching three different year groups at the Jinan University - University of Birmingham Joint Institute during the early part of 2020. We reflect on how technology was used, draw conclusions and discuss potential opportunities for the future of remote-teaching.

Considering the current situation of COVID-19 and travel restrictions, the 3rd International Conference on Industrial Applications of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (BDAI 2021) which was planned to be held in Wuhan. China from Sept. 23 to 25, 2021 was changed into virtual conference on Sept. 24, 2021 via Tencent Meeting (Voov) software. BDAI 2021 was organized by China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), sponsored by Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers (HKSME). The Technical Program committee received a total of 38 paper submissions from all over the world, among which 20 papers were accepted, and more than 30 participants attended the conference online, they were from China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Japan, UK and more. Four renowned speakers given speeches about their latest research and reports. They are: Prof. Dan Zhang from York University, Canada; Prof. Lefei Zhang from Wuhan University. China: Prof. Deze Zeng from China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), China and Assoc. Prof. Simon James Fong from University of Macau. Macau S.A.R., China. The conference also had 1 technical session and 1 poster sessions. This conference aims to provide a platform for researchers and engineers to share their ideas, recent developments, and successful practices in energy engineering. The participants of the conference were from almost every part of the world, with various background such as academia, industry, and well-known entrepreneurs. Each keynote speech lasted 40 minutes, and authors presentation 15 minutes. Each presentation was included with questions and answers. BDAI 2021 became an effective communication platform for all the participants over the world and unlike some that claim international reach this conference was truly international. The conference proceeding is a compilation of the accepted papers and represent an interesting outcome of the conference. This book covers 3 chapters: 1. Artificial Intelligence: 2. Big Data Technology; 3. Robot System. We would like to acknowledge all of those who supported BDAI 2021. Each individual and institutional help were very important for the success of this conference. Especially we would like to thank the committee chairs, committee members and reviewers, for their tremendous contribution in conference organization and peer review of the papers. We sincerely hope that BDAI 2021 will be a fomrn for excellent discussions that will put forward new ideas and promote collaborative research and support researchers as they take their work forward. We are sure that the proceedings will serve as an important research source of references and the knowledge, which will lead to not only scientific and engineering progress but also other new products and processes. Exact land cover inventory data should be extracted for future landscape prediction and seismic hazard assessment. This paper presents a comprehensive study towards the sustainable development of Tabriz City (NW Iran) including land cover change detection, future potential landscape, seismic hazard assessment and municipal performance evaluation. Landsat data using maximum likelihood (ML) and Markov chain algorithms were used to evaluate changes in land cover in the study area. The urbanization pattern taking place in the city was also studied via synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data of Sentinel-1 ground range detected (GRD) and single look complex (SLC). The age of buildings was extracted by using built-up areas of all classified maps. The logistic regression (LR) model was used for creating a seismic hazard assessment map. From the results, it can be concluded that the land cover (especially built-up areas) has seen considerable changes from 1989 to 2020. The overall accuracy (OA) values of the produced maps for the years 1989, 2005, 2011 and 2020 are 96%, 96%, 93% and 94%, respectively. The future potential landscape of the city showed that the land cover prediction by using the Markov chain model provided a promising finding. Four images of 1989, 2005, 2011 and 2020, were employed for built-up areas’ land information trends, from which it was indicated that most of the built-up areas had been constructed before 2011. The seismic hazard assessment map indicated that municipal zones of 1 and 9 were the least susceptible areas to an earthquake; conversely, municipal zones of 4, 6, 7 and 8 were located in the most susceptible regions to an earthquake in the future. More findings showed that municipal zones 1 and 4 demonstrated the best and worst performance among all zones, respectively.

ABSTRACTLack of support and interest among the public is one of the major challenges in strengthening and sustaining the future national agendas on Antarctica. The main goal of this study is to identify the perception of Malaysia's public with regard to Antarctic values and Malaysian involvement in the region. A survey on Malaysia's young citizen perception on Antarctic has been conducted for mapping out the future landscape of Malaysian involvement in the Antarctic region. Surveys have been conducted on respondents from secondary schools and universities in Malaysia. A questionnaire was designed to seek respondents’ knowledge and awareness on the values of Antarctica and their opinions on Malaysia's involvement. The results of the study showed that respondents had a high level of awareness of Antarctic environmental issues. However, general knowledge about the Antarctic region was still intermediate. On the other hand, the results of this study showed that the young citizens had positive and strong support for strengthening Malaysia's Antarctic involvement. This study hopes to contribute as baseline data on the matter. Such background information will reflect on the national strategy in strengthening Malaysia's current policy and future involvement in Antarctica.
