Objetivou-se estimar as (co)variâncias, os parâmetros e correlações genéticas entre o perímetro escrotal(PE), e o peso aos 365 dias de idade (P365), o peso aos 550 dias (P550), a idade ao primeiro parto(IPP) e o intervalo entre partos (IDP) de um rebanho da raça Nelore na região norte do Tocantins. Operíodo de coleta de dados foi entre os anos de 1991 e 2011, com registros de PE de 5.724 machos,dados de 1.364 e 3.481 fêmeas de IPP e IDP, respectivamente, e 6.210 e 5.290 registros de P365 e P550.As estimativas dos coeficientes de herdabilidade e correlações genéticas entre as características PE eP365, PE e P550 foram altas, demonstrando elevada variabilidade do rebanho, sugerindo a possibilidadede seleção com ganhos significativos em gerações futuras. As herdabilidade de IPP e IDP foram debaixa magnitude, sugerindo dificuldades no processo seletivo. A correlação entre PE e IPP foi de moderadaà baixa magnitude, indicando baixa associação entre as características, e fazendo-se necessáriorever a intensidade de seleção para as características reprodutivas. A característica PE mostrou-se bomindicador ou critério de seleção para características produtivas (P365 e P550), não sendo indicada paracaracterísticas reprodutivas. Há necessidade de se intensificar a seleção para caractéristicas reprodutivasno rebanho em estudo.

Genetic correlations of lifetime pregnancy rate with bull and heifer growth and reproductive traits in a beef composite population were estimated. Yearling scrotal circumference had an unfavorable genetic correlation (rg = −0.25) while yearling tonometer score was favorably related (rg = 0.22) to lifetime pregnancy rate. Heifer pregnancy rate, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and age at puberty in heifers had significant genetic correlations (rg = 0.97, 0.58, 0.57, 0.33 and −0.21, respectively) with lifetime pregnancy rate. Lifetime pregnancy rate may be successfully predicted by easy-to-measure heifer growth traits. Using indices including scrotal and heifer growth traits, annual genetic change in lifetime pregnancy rate may be increased 3.1 times compared with direct selection. The relationship between the pattern of early testicular growth and postpubertal spermatogenic function and libido was investigated with 14 Suffolk rams born in March. Scrotal circumference and testicular diameter (TD) measurements were taken every 10 d between 30 and 190 d of age, and at 13 and 17 mo. Daily sperm output (DSO, sperm voided in urine) or semen quality, and libido were assessed at approximately 6, 13 and 17 mo of age. At 6 mo of age, rams with the larger testes had a greater DSO (r ≥ 0.77, P < 0.01) and mated estrual ewes more frequently (r ≥ 0.72, P < 0.01). Rams with larger testes at 13 mo had a greater DSO (r ≥ 0.74, P < 0.01), and those with larger testes at 17 mo ejaculated a higher percentage of motile spermatozoa (r ≥ 0.55, P < 0.05) and a greater number of spermatozoa (r = 0.61, P < 0.05; TD only). DSO at 13 mo was related to testicular size (r ≥ 0.54, P < 0.05) between 150 and 190 d of age. There were also correlations between the number of spermatozoa ejaculated at 17 mo and testicular size measurements (r ≥ 0.56, P < 0.05) taken between 170 and 190 d. However, ejaculation frequency (EF) at both 13 and 17 mo was not related to earlier testicular size measurements. Whereas testicular size and spermatogenic function of yearling Suffolk rams relate to testicular size measurements taken at about 6 mo of age, juvenile testicular size measurements correlate with EF only in the immediate postpubertal period. The objective of study were to determine the effectiveness of Ovalbumin-LHRH-7 (OL) protein administered with cytosine guanine (CpG) adjuvant and Incomplete Freund’s Adjuvant (IFA), and used one-shot immunization (single-dose vaccination) protocol in which booster dose included in microspheres in rams. Fifty ram lambs at about a year old were used. Treatment groups receiving Ovalbumin LHRH and control contained 10 animals. They were stratified according to age (weeks), live weight and scrotal circumference size, and were randomly assigned to five groups. Scrotal circumference, sexual activities and the numbers of rams having sperm in the ejaculate were affected from treatment (P less than 0.05) depending on the dose and vaccination protocol. However, immunization did not affect live weight changes in any treatment groups (P>0.05). Findings clearly demonstrate that the effects of OL immunization on reproductive traits in yearling rams were prominent when it was administered at higher dose and classical one primary and one booster immunization as free protein form. Also we observed that the effect of higher and single dose of OL protein in encapsulated form on reproductive traits had the partial suppressing. CpG adjuvant along with IFA was proved to be an effective adjuvant and could be suggested to be used and alternative to FCA in hormone immunization.

<p>The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and (co)variance of Nellore animals and to characterize the associations between these characteristics for the following carcass traits: weight (W), longissimus muscle area (LMA), rump fat thickness (RF) and fat thickness between the 12th and 13th ribs obtained by ultrasound (BF); also, the following reproductive traits: age at first calving (AFC), first calving interval (FCI), scrotal circumference at 450 and 550 days of age (SC450 and SC550). The genetic parameters were estimated by a single-trait and two traits animal model using Bayesian inference. The model used for all of the features included the genetic random effect and age as covariate assuming a quadratic effect. Additionally, sex, month and year of birth and management of creation and environmental effects identified were included for the carcass traits. For AFC, FCI and SC450 and SC550, we considered only the month and year of birth. The heritability estimates for all of the traits were higher in the two traits analysis, except for AFC and FCI, which showed 0.75 and 0.29, respectively, similar values in the single trait analysis. The two traits analyses resulted in heritability estimates for a posteriori for the features W, LMA, BF, RF, SC450 and SC550 of 0.49, 0.66, 0.74, 0.68 0.66 and 0.74, respectively, suggesting the possibility of genetic gains during a short period of time. The genetic correlations between AFC and carcass traits measured by ultrasound were close to zero. A similar trend was found for AFC, SC450 and SC550 days, indicating that the selection for these traits does not promote changes in AFC. High genetic correlations (0.92, 0.93 and 0.94) were observed between the characteristics LMA and W, BF and RF, and SC450 and SC550, respectively.</p>

Genetic correlations of young bull and heifer puberty traits with measures of early and lifetime female reproductive performance were estimated in two tropical beef cattle genotypes. Heifer age at puberty was highly (rg = –0.71 ± 0.11) and moderately (rg = –0.40 ± 0.20) genetically correlated with pregnancy rate at first annual mating (mating 1) and lifetime annual calving rate, respectively in Brahman (BRAH). In Tropical Composite (TCOMP), heifer age at puberty was highly correlated with reproductive outcomes from the first re-breed (mating 2), mainly due to its association with lactation anoestrous interval (rg = 0.72 ± 0.17). Scrotal circumference were correlated with heifer age at puberty (rg = –0.41 ± 0.11 at 12 months in BRAH; –0.30 ± 0.13 at 6 months in TCOMP) but correlations were lower with later female reproduction traits. Bull insulin-like growth factor-I was correlated with heifer age at puberty (rg = –0.56 ± 0.11 in BRAH; –0.43 ± 0.11 in TCOMP) and blood luteinising hormone concentration was moderately correlated with lactation anoestrous interval (rg = 0.59 ± 0.23) in TCOMP. Semen quality traits, including mass activity, motility and percent normal sperm were genetically correlated with lactation anoestrus and female lifetime female reproductive traits in both genotypes, but the magnitudes of the relationships differed with bull age at measurement. Preputial eversion and sheath scores were genetically associated with lifetime calving and weaning rates in both genotypes. Several of the early-in-life male and female measures examined were moderately to highly genetically correlated with early and lifetime female reproduction traits and may be useful as indirect selection criteria for improving female reproduction in tropical breeds in northern Australia.

Genetic breeding programs of beef cattle in Brazil are including new features, mainly related to reproductive efficiency.Thus, it is necessary to study the effectiveness of selection and quantify genetic gain for these traits in herds. This study estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters and genetic trends for reproductive traits used in breeding programs for Nelore beef cattle. The traits studied were the scrotal circumference (SC) at 365 and 450 days of age (SC365 and SC450), age at first calving (AFC) and gestation length, as a cow trait (GLcow) and a calf trait (GLcalf). The (co)variance components were obtained with the Restricted Maximum Likelihood Methodology in a single and double-trait analysis of the animal model. For scrotal circumference (SC365 and SC450), positive and favorable genetic gains were observed. For AFC, GLcow and GLcalf, the trends were favorable for selection, but without significant genetic gain. Selection for large SC may reduce AFC and improve female reproductive efficiency. The selection for reproductive traits (SC365, SC450, AFC and GL) may improve reproductive and productive efficiency of Nelore cattle, if used as a selection criterion.
