Background: NSAIDs like Aspirin etc. are randomly used for mild to severe types of pain but long-term and injudicious use of NSAIDs lead to a number of side effects. The present study is designed for exploring the analgesic potential of Curcuma longa Linn (Turmeric) in albino rats, which may widen the therapeutic horizon for the said agent. Methods: Ethanolic extract of Curcuma longa in the doses 100, 200 and 400mg/kg is given orally to 6 Wister rats against a control of normal saline and a standard using Aspirin (300mg/kg) and the animals were subjected to Eddy’s hot plate test at different time intervals i.e., 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after administration of the drugs and the parameters were noted. Results: The analgesic activity of Curcuma longa showed significant (p<0.05) increase in mean basal reaction time in Hot plate method when compared to the control (Normal saline). As the dose of the ethanolic extract of Curcuma longa was gradually increased from 100, 200 and 400mg/kg respectively, the analgesic activity significantly increased (<0.05). Effect of curcuma longa at a dose of 400mg/kg is found to be comparable with Aspirin. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that turmeric (Curcuma longa) has significant analgesic activities in rats.

The objective of the present study was to develop quality parameters to evaluate and standardize the polyherbal formulation and also to study the eight crude drugs viz. Curcuma longa - rhizome (Manjal), Salacia oblonga- root bark (Ekanayakam), Emblica officinalis- pericarp (Nellika), Strychnos potatorum - seed (Thettanparal), Ixora coccinea - root (Chethi), Vettiveria zizanioides - root (Ramacham), Aerva lanata - root (Cherula) and Symplocos racemosa - bark (Pachotti). The studies included physic-chemical parameters, HPTLC studies, heavy metal analysis and standardization of formulation using chemical markers. Antimicrobial activity of different fractions of kashayam was studied and found to be highest for ethanolic extract of kashayam. The pharmacognostical studies include microscopical, macroscopical examinations, ash values and extractive values, mineral elemental analysis, fluorescence analysis and FTIR analysis.

We investigated the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of different forms (local names:muraandchora) of turmeric(Curcuma longa)from the Khulna and Chittagong divisions of Bangladesh for their antioxidant properties and polyphenol, flavonoid, tannin, and ascorbic acid contents. The antioxidant activity was determined using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values. The ethanolic extract of Chittagong’s mura contained the highest concentrations of polyphenols (16.07%), flavonoids (9.66%), and ascorbic acid (0.09 mg/100 g) and chora resulted in high yields (17.39%). The ethanolic extract of Khulna’s mura showed a higher DPPH radical-scavenging activity with the lowest 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) (1.08 μg/mL), while Khulna’s chora had the highest FRAP value (4204.46±74.48 μM Fe[II]per 100 g). Overall, the ethanolic extract had higher antioxidant properties than those in the aqueous extract. However, the tannin concentration was lower in the ethanolic extract. We conclude that the turmeric varieties investigated in this study are useful sources of natural antioxidants, which confer significant protection against free radical damage.
