The scientific and economic value of research data is enormous. In order to realize a successful subsequent usage, the scientific community needs efficient access to data. Thereby, the access has to be reliable and persistent. In addition, the quality of the data has to be proved following standardized work flows. One solution to these preconditions is to apply techniques of today’s scientific publishing to research data. Besides the access to the data sets through data repositories together with some metadata, the data should undergo a transparent peer-review using a publication platform. The presentation discusses two approaches. On the one hand, the data can be the basis for a research article and undergoes a review parallel to the review of the manuscript. The data is then a reviewed supplement to a scientific publication. On the other hand, the data itself can be the subject of a publication whose quality is then assured by peers. The presentation provides practical experience, especially with the latter strategy, realized through the open access journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD) with interactive public peer-review.

AbstrakBanyak pihak masih meragukan kualitas jurnal Indonesia. AbstractThe quality of Indonesian journal are still questioned by many authors, including Indonesian authors. One of the quality mark for an open access  journal is included in DOAJ indexing. However, the quality of a journal is based not only on the quality of the articles but also the management. Therefore it is very important to describe the quality of Indonesian journals, in terms of both aspects. This paper is considered as the first attempt to uncover the facts behind Indonesian journals. The data is gathered from DOAJ database using the following filters: 1) Search type: Journal, 2) Country of publisher: Indonesia, dan 3) Full text language: Indonesia. Based on the data, we manage to get 500 Indonesia journals with 420 (84%) of them are in Indonesian language (data acquired in 24-27 March 2017). The top 3 fields are education, Islam education, and business and commerce.  The sum of articles have reached more than 51,000 (1984-2017), 7th place, in top 10 rank based on language. Here we could see that Indonesia journal is a new massive new force in scientific publication. DOAJ indexing is just a start, but efforts to increase the quality of articles and governance are still way ahead. Sustainable quality improvement is the most important thing. The use of English as lingua franca in science should not be dealt as a burden. Accordingly the mentioned facts have to be used to raise awareness of academia from non English speaking countries, especially the ones in ASEAN area, to stand equally with their colleagues from western world. In fact writing in native language should help Indonesian scientist to express their ideas more clearly and precisely. Also, journal managers should also not be intimidated with commercial indexing (eg: Scopus, WoS). With this dynamic scientific movement, commercial indexing will not be used as the main indicator for quality. Moreoever, Indonesian government should also the growth of Indonesian journals by releasing more inclusive regulations and reducing the role of commercial indexing. Kata Kunci: DOAJ, ilmiah, Indonesia, jurnal, publikasi

The academic editor has been, and still is, the gatekeeper of peer-reviewed scientific publications, by being whom, ultimately, defines whether or not a manuscript can be published. At a time of profound transformation in the context of scientific publication (digital publishing, open access, preprint, open peer review,...) and the expectations, inside and outside academia, towards academic publication, this perspective paper aims to add to the discussion of the (re)formulation of the academic editor’s role, considering that he or she, in this panoply of changes, continues, and will continue to be, the ultimate guardian of the scientific quality of what is published.

Proper peer review and quality of published articles are often regarded as signs of reliable scientific journals. The aim of this study was to compare whether the quality of statistical reporting and data presentation differs among articles published in ‘predatory dental journals’ and in other dental journals. We evaluated 50 articles published in ‘predatory open access (OA) journals’ and 100 clinical trials published in legitimate dental journals between 2019 and 2020. The quality of statistical reporting and data presentation of each paper was assessed on a scale from 0 (poor) to 10 (high). The mean (SD) quality score of the statistical reporting and data presentation was 2.5 (1.4) for the predatory OA journals, 4.8 (1.8) for the legitimate OA journals, and 5.6 (1.8) for the more visible dental journals. The mean values differed significantly (p < 0.001). The quality of statistical reporting of clinical studies published in predatory journals was found to be lower than in open access and highly cited journals. This difference in quality is a wake-up call to consume study results critically. Poor statistical reporting indicates wider general lower quality in publications where the authors and journals are less likely to be critiqued by peer review.

Technological development has transformed academic publication over the past two decades and new publication models, especially Open Access, have captured an important part of the publishing market, traditionally dominated by the Subscription publication model. Although Health Sciences have been one of the leading fields promoting Open Access, the perspectives of Health Science researchers on the benefits and possibilities of Open Access remain an open question. The present study sought to unveil the perspective of researchers on scientific publication decisions, in terms of the Subscription and Open Access publication model, Gold Road. With this aim, we surveyed Spanish researchers in Health Sciences. Our findings show that the value of publishing in Open Access journals increases as the experience of the researcher increases and the less she/he values the impact factor. Moreover, visibility and dissemination of the results are the main determinants of publication when choosing an Open Access journal as the first option. According to the response of the researchers, the reduction of fees and the increase in financing are important economic incentive measures to promote the Open Access publication model. It is widely accepted that the volume of Open Access publications will increase in the future.

Over the past few years, different changes have been introduced into the science publishing industry. However, important reforms are still required at both the content and form levels. First, the peer review process needs to be open, fair and transparent. Second, author-paid fees in open access journals need to either be removed or reconsidered toward more affordability. Third, the categorization of papers should include all types of scientific contributions that can be of higher interest to the scientific community than many mere quantitative and observable measures, or simply removed from publications. Forth, word counts and reference numbers in online open access journal should be nuanced or replaced by recommended ranges rather than to be a proxy of acceptance or rejection. Finally, all the coauthors of a manuscript should be considered corresponding authors and responsible for their mutual manuscript rather than only one or two.

The Roadmap of Government Transformation Program 2010 reported that the sense of fear of crime among Malaysians is quite high which is 89 percent. So, the questions is, do they feel safe without fence? Therefore, this paper seeks on the neighborhood with no fence to identify the sense of safety and fear of crime (FOC) among residents. The result indicates that longer resident living in residential areas is significant with perceptions of crime (POC) in the neighborhood (p = 0.00). The more people go out at night is also significant with POC in the neighborhood (p = 0.012). Keywords: Crime; quality of life; fear of crime; sense of safetyeISSN 2398-4279 © 2018. The Authors. Almost every open access neuroscience journal is pay-to-publish. This leaves neuroscientists with a choice of submitting to journals that not all of our colleagues can legitimately access and choosing to pay large sums of money to publish open access. Neuroanatomy and Behaviour is a new platinum open access journal published by a non-profit association of scientists. Since we do not charge fees, we will focus entirely on the quality of submitted articles and encourage the adoption of reproducibility-enhancing practices, like open data, preregistration, and data quality checks. We hope that our colleagues will join us in this endeavour so that we can support good neuroscience no matter where it comes from.

The objective of this work is to analyze the theoretical-methodological principles related to the description and accessibility of research data. Hermeneutics and discourse analysis were applied to literature specialized in: research data; access and description of research data; data repositories. Metadata elements for the description of research datasets that are included in the DataCite Metadata Schema were identified and analyzed, in order to create a descriptive profile proposal for research data sets, which can be applied in the data repositories. If the research data is properly described, then its accessibility and reuse will be further promoted. To do this, it is necessary for academic and research institutions to participate in the generation of open access policies for their research data.
