Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hydroxychloroquine is being prescribed by the doctors all over the world for the treatment as well as prevention of COVID-19 with varying results. As we know damage in severe COVID-19 disease occurs mainly via the immunological mechanism. There is an assumption that HCQ has immunomodulatory property and thus may have a beneficial role in severe COVID-19 disease. In this retrospective study, we describe our experience of using low dose of HCQ (200mg/day) in 27 hospitalized severe cases of COVID-19 disease. We found, though the use of HCQ resulted in improvements in chest X-rays, there was no significant reduction in the deaths in the cases where HCQ was used.

We present an observational retrospective study which takes into consideration and analyzes the surgical management of emergency colorectal cancer cases. This analysis would contribute to a better understanding and for identification of those characteristics that are essential for reducing emergency colorectal cancer incidence and for improving the management of such cases. A number of 159 patients that underwent surgery for obstructive, bleeding or perforated colorectal cancer between January 2015 and September 2017 were selected to be included in the study. The results obtained by analyzing available data collected from the observation charts, surgery protocols, histopathological protocols were then compared with those in the literature.

We present a preliminary report of an observational retrospective study of clinical and pathological features of emergency colorectal cancer (CCR) aiming to identify specific profiles of patients according to gender, age, and residence. This analysis would contribute to better understanding surgical emergency presentation and for identification of those characteristics that are essential for both reducing emergency CCR incidence and for improving the management of such cases. A number of 159 patients that underwent surgery for obstructive, bleeding and perforated colorectal cancer between January 2015 and September 2017 were selected to be included in the study. The results obtained by analyzing available data collected from the observation charts, surgery protocols, histopathological protocols were then compared with those in the literature.

In this retrospective observational study, we evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in London on paediatric radiology activity, as a surrogate of overall hospital activity. We showed a large reduction in overall outpatient imaging activity: 49 250 records occurred in the 371 days post COVID-19 period compared with an expected 67 806 records pre COVID-19 period, representing 18 556 ‘missed’ records. Governmental restrictions were associated with reductions in activity, with the largest reduction in activity during tiers 3 and 4 restrictions. Rescheduling such missed outpatients’ appointments represents considerable resource planning and the associated clinical impact on paediatric healthcare remains to be determined.

Objectives Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used for acid suppression therapy. Recently, PPI use was reported to be associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, whether a low dose of PPIs is associated with CKD remains unknown. Methods This retrospective observational study included hypertensive patients who visited Kenwakai Hospital between 2017 and 2019. Renal parameters, such as the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and serum creatinine (Scr), were extracted from medical records and compared between three years before treatment and the baseline. PPI use was assessed as cumulative exposure for three years. Results The study population included 152 patients (57.9% men; mean age, 74.5 years). Of those, 35.5% were PPI users (low dose, 17.1%; high dose, 18.4%). A significant decrease in eGFR and an increase in Scr were observed between three years before treatment and the baseline in the high-dose PPI group but not the non-use or low-dose PPI groups. Conclusions Our results suggest that a low dose of PPIs may be safe in clinical settings, but further prospective studies are needed to clarify our findings.

SummaryThe retrospective observational study surveys the relationship between development of inhibitors in the treatment of haemophilia patients and risk factors such as changing FVIII products. A total of 119 patients were included in this study, 198 changes of FVIII products were evaluated. Results: During the observation period of 12 months none of the patients developed an inhibitor, which was temporally associated with a change of FVIII products. A frequent change of FVIII products didn’t lead to an increase in inhibitor risk. The change between plasmatic and recombinant preparations could not be confirmed as a risk factor. Furthermore, no correlation between treatment regimens, severity, patient age and comorbidities of the patients could be found.
