It is important to determine whether the school attitude of secondary school students has an influence on the reading attitude. For this purpose, such a study was conducted at secondary school level. In addition, the extent to which such variables as mother tongue are determinative in this context has been examined. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between the attitudes of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade secondary school students toward the school and reading. In addition, the study also examines whether the attitude towards reading and school differs according to gender, class, and mother tongue variables. A total of 513 students (235 females, 278 males) attending secondary school in the province of Van in Turkeyparticipated in the research. In the study, Attitude Scale toward Reading developed by Alıcı (2013) is used in order to measure the attitudes of the students towards the school. Additionally, Reading Attitude Scale for Elementary Second Grade Students developed by Özbay and Uyar (2009) isused to measure the students’ attitudes towards reading. According to the results, there is a moderate significant relation between students’ attitudes toward the school and attitudes toward reading. According to the findings obtained from the study,it is seen that the attitudes of female students toward the school are more positive than those of male students. It is concluded that the attitudes of 5th grade students toward the school are more positive than those of the other students. Furthermore, students whose mother tongue is Turkish have more positive reading attitudes than the students whose mother tongue is Kurdish or one of other languages (Arabic, Persian, and so on).

The purpose of the study was to examine secondary school students' attitudes towards social media and their loneliness levels in terms of gender and whether they do sports or not. The sample of the study consisted of 175 female and 269 male secondary school stıdents. To collect data personal information form, Social Media Attitude Scale (Otrar ve Argın, 2013) and UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, Peplau, & Cutrona, 1980) were used to in this study. Independent t test analysis was conducted to examine whether the participants' social media attitudes and loneliness levels differed with regard to gender and do sport. According to the results, there was no significant difference in social media attitudes (t = -.832, p > .05) with regard to gender. However, loneliness levels of the participants seems to be significantly different with regard to gender (t = -6.513, p = .000). When the participants were examined whether they do sports or not, there was not any significant difference in social media attitudes (t = -.427, p> .05). However, the levels of loneliness was significantly found to be different in terms of doing sports or not (t = -3.675, p = .000). Furthermore, there was not a significant relationship between social media attitudes and loneliness (p > .05). It can be concluded that sport and regular physical activity can be considered as a means to provide environments where individuals will feel far away from the feeling of loneliness and that they will feel themselves more valuable.

Physics is among the significant science subjects taught at the secondary school level in Nigerias education system. There has been a growing concern about the poor performance in physics in Nigeria. The present study was aimed to determine teachers likability as a factor that could influence students attitudes towards physics. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey. The population of the survey includes secondary school students in the Kogi State of Nigeria. Participants comprised males and females senior secondary school students. They were mainly pooled from the science class. One hundred and thirty-nine students participated in the study. Data was collected using a Teachers Likability Scale and the Physics Attitude Scale (PAS). The result revealed that most of the respondents indicated a negative attitude toward the subject (M = 0.87, SD = 0.35), while few (M = 0.18, SD = 0.39) showed a positive attitude towards the subject. A linear regression model was conducted to test the study hypothesis. The result showed that teachers likability statistically significantly predicted attitude towards physics F(1,137), 124.617 P< .05. The study concluded that a teachers likability is a significant predictor of attitude towards physics. Thus, it is recommended that teachers should be more facilitators than strict instructors.

Chemistry is among the essential science subjects taught at the secondary school level in Nigerias education landscape. There has been a persistent concern about the poor performance in chemistry in Nigeria. The present study investigated teachers likability as a scarcely explored variable that could explain the variation in students attitudes towards chemistry. A cross-sectional survey was employed for the analysis, and the population of the study comprised senior secondary school students in the Kogi State of Nigeria. Participants included males and females senior secondary school students enrolled in the science classes. One hundred and fifty-three students participated in the study. The respondents completed a self-report measure of the Teachers Likability Scale and the Attitude Toward Chemistry Lessons Scale (ATCLS). The finding showed that most of the participants indicated a negative attitude toward the subject (M = 2.89, SD = 3.32), compared to others (M = 1.18, SD = 3.39) that exhibited an unfavorable attitude towards the chemistry. A linear regression analysis was conducted to test the study hypothesis, and the result showed that teachers likability statistically significantly predicted attitude towards chemistry F (1,151), 124.716, P< .05. Therefore, the study concluded that a teachers likability is an essential determinant of students attitudes towards chemistry. Thus, it is recommended that teachers should improve in their personal and professional attributes.

Upper secondary school students’ writer identities and the process of self-understanding – reflective writing in the teaching of mother tongue and literature Abstract In my article I discuss reflective writing in the teaching of mother tongue and literature at the upper secondary school level. I associate reflection with writer identities, which I perceive as processes of self-understanding, influenced by the environment. This view is based on the theory of narrative identity (Ricœur 1991, 1992), which outlines self-understanding as a hermeneutic circle. The research material consists of 50 reflective texts written by upper secondary school students. According to the linguistic analysis of the texts, reflection is manifested as understanding about personal choices and reaching out to the reader. The writers present their own experiences as shared and, on the other hand, discuss alternative views within their texts. Keywords: writing, reflection, upper secondary school, mother tongue education, writer identity

Kodály-inspired pedagogy enables students to participate effectively in a music course by engaging in active musical interactions with folk songs and melodies. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Kodály-inspired pedagogy on recorder performance and attitudes toward music of secondary school students. A quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The experimental group was taught using Kodály-inspired pedagogy and the control group using the general music teaching methods for 9 weeks. A two-way mixed-design analysis of variance (ANOVA) and content analysis were used to analyze the data. A Recorder Performance Grading Key, music course attitude scale, and open-ended questions were used to collect the data. Consequently, the findings indicated that Kodály-inspired pedagogy had a significant effect on the students’ recorder performance but the researchers could not find a significant effect on students’ attitudes toward the music course. Moreover, students in the experimental group reported improvement in their recorder performance and attitudes toward music education. The researchers recommended including information about the implementation of Kodály-inspired pedagogy in music teacher textbooks, providing in-service training for teachers to enable them to use Kodály-inspired pedagogy.

Argues that secondary school students' attitudes toward reading may be conceptualized multi-dimensionally as consisting of Individual Development, Utilitarian, and Enjoyment factors. Describes the development of self-report scales designed to measure each of these dimensions of reading attitude. Factor analyses showed the dimensions to be distinguishable empirically one from the other. The three scales were found to be internally consistent (α = .69-.92) and stable (α = .72-.90). Concurrent validity data based on peer ratings are also provided. Implications for pedagogical and research issues arising from this conceptualization of attitude toward reading are also discussed.
