Genres represent purposive and staged ways of communicating in a culture and enacting a range of important institutional practices. Genre studies have paved the way for understanding the way discourse is used in academic, professional, and institutional contexts. This paper analyzed the psycholinguistic realization and drew out socio-cultural imprints in the construction of application letter and résumé in the Philippine setting. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in the analysis of job application documents representing different professions to determine the generic structure and the linguistic features of the moves and strategies that accomplish the communicative functions of the genres. Employers’ group survey and job interview extracts were also used to cross-validate and provide snapshots on the interpretations made. A seven-move and a five-move generic structure occurring in a flexible sequence define the composition of job application letter and résumé, respectively. The construction of these two types of discourse is influenced and constrained by the applicant’s psycholinguistic repertoire, professional background, and socio-cultural milieu. A genre-based pedagogy is recommended to sensitize Filipinos of the existing genres and textlinguistic variations in the workplace. Keywords - discourse analysis, genre analysis, letter of application, résumé

Manipulation is a discursive phenomenon used by speakers to affect the thoughts ( and indirectly the actions) of the recipients. This study is concerned with manipulation in two political speeches; one in English delivered by the American President Donald J. Trump, while the other in Arabic delivered by the Iraqi President Barham Salih to be the study's data. Each one of these two speeches is divided into serial-numbered extracts( henceforth Ext.). The study aims at investigating the semantic and rhetorical devices utilized as manipulation strategies in these speeches. To this end, the qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis will be followed in this study. The significance of the study stems from how the ideological dimension based on bettering off the speaker's image and derogating others' image plays a vital role in the political speeches. This study draws on Van Dijk's ideological approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of political discourse, and accordingly, it is adopted as a model. Results revealed that both speakers use lexicalization, a list of three, repetition, and citing as effective techniques in their two speeches to affect their recipients' minds. The study concluded that the ideological framework of "positive self-presentation" and "negative other-presentation" is the central umbrella under which manipulation can exist and work freely. The findings might help linguists and political analysts to understand how politicians use the linguistic features in their discourse to affect the audience's thoughts and behaviors manipulatively.

AbstractBased on a qualitative, discourse-analytic and a quantitative, sociolinguistic analysis, this article investigates four sets of linguistic features and their occurrence in recordings of 36 lectures and interactional classes collected at a university in Germany. It examines how structural markers, questions, question tags, and turn-initial response tokens contribute to variations of style in response to academic division, speech mode, communicative role in academic discourse and gender. Of these four factors, the latter appears to be the least influential in the use of the structures investigated, due to, as is argued, global discourse restrictions in academic speech. Qualitative analysis shows that global restrictions can be overridden locally as certain discourse contexts are amenable to the appearance of features that contribute to more interactional and cooperative speech styles, frequently linked to females. The article concludes that a foundational understanding of relevant discourse genres and their constraints and a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods can make an important contribution to a better understanding of the dynamics of language and gender.

Stemmed from Generic Structure Potential (GSP) Theory, Genre-based Teaching Approach (GTA) is a teaching method based on genre analysis. This study intends to apply GTA to News Writing Course in a Chinese university, hoping to construct a more effective genre-analysis-based teaching mode. Using quantitative methods, this one-semester long study was conducted with two English News Writing classes involving 58 sophomores as the participants. Data were collected through pre- and post-class tests. The result shows that GTA is effective in improving students’ ability of genre analysis and news writing.

The general objective of the article is to characterize two analytical categories such as social metabolism and bioeconomy from the perspective of ecological economics as bridges for discussion, critique, and solution of the problems of the 21st century. The methodology is qualitative, the method is a documentary review, and its type is exploratory. The main conclusion is that to solve the problems of the present it is necessary to generate theoretical frameworks such as qualitative and quantitative methods that seek a dialogue of knowledge, since the difficulties that exist are due among other things to the way in which capitalism has mutated for the benefit of large multinationals and not necessarily for human societies with harmful effects on the environment. Therefore, Ecological Economics and Metabolisms are approaches that, being anchored in interdisciplinary discourses, can contribute to generating solutions to problems.

This study has two objectives. Firstly, it explores how do R&D narratives differ in various clusters of biopharmaceutical companies in terms of discussion context and text readability. Secondly, it examines whether the way how biopharmaceutical companies depict their business within R&D context is dependent on R&D expenses or R&D intensity levels. The paper contributes to the literature in applying qualitative and quantitative methods.

Abstract Referring to the latest curriculum, School-Based Curriculum, every English textbook should provide genres based on the level of literacy of each grade. On this paper, I analyzed English textbooks published by Erlangga ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ English on Sky (EOS), and by Pakar Raya -- Let?óÔé¼Ôäós Talk. This paper focuses on how are the reading passages of the textbooks compatible with ?óÔé¼?ôStandard Isi?óÔé¼?Ø?. Coinciding with the statement of the problems, the objectives of this paper are to describe the generic structures of the texts, the types of text, linguistic features, social purposes, and then their compatibility to ?óÔé¼?ôStandar Isi?óÔé¼?Ø. There are some crucial problems found such; the types of text provided in EOS were Descriptive (80%) and Procedure (20%), whereas in Let?óÔé¼Ôäós Talk were Descriptive (57.2%) and Procedure (42.8%). Looking at the percentage of both text types, I found a crucial problem in EOS on some texts and in applying simple continuous tense in descriptive text. To sum up the result, I conclude that Let?óÔé¼Ôäós Talk is more compatible than EOS. Keywords: Genre, text, social purpose, generic structure, linguistic features, School-Based Curriculum (KTSP), English textbook, communicative competence, ?óÔé¼?ôStandar Isi?óÔé¼?Ø.

Abstract Epistemic dependence refers to our social mechanisms of reliance in practices of knowledge production. Epistemic oppression concerns persistent and unwarranted exclusions from those practices. This article examines the relationship between these two frameworks and demonstrates that attending to their relationship is a fruitful practice for applied epistemology. Paying attention to relations of epistemic dependence and how exclusive they are can help us track epistemically oppressive practices. In order to show this, I introduce a taxonomy of epistemic dependence (interpersonal – communal – structural). I argue that this particular taxonomy is useful for tracking epistemically oppressive practices in institutional contexts. This is because, first, the forms of epistemic dependence in this taxonomy yield, what I call, diagnostic questions. These are questions that help us track how relations of epistemic dependence could become exclusive and that thus help reveal epistemic oppression in institutional contexts. Second, the forms of epistemic dependence in the taxonomy are interrelated. Paying attention not just to each of three forms of epistemic dependence but also to the way in which they are interrelated is useful for illuminating epistemically oppressive practices. I conclude by demonstrating how the diagnostic questions can be used in analyses of concrete institutional practices in asylum law and higher education.
