Age, growth and reproduction of the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758 collected from the Central Mediterranean in the period 2004-2010 by the traditional Maltese fish aggregating devices (FAD) and surface longline fisheries were studied. The a and b parameters of the length-weight relationship for fish 11-142 cm fork length (FL) (n = 4042) were determined as a = 0.018 and 0.022 with b = 2.85 and 2.79, for males and females respectively. The counting of annual increments from dorsal spines of >65 cm FL dolphinfish at X25 magnification (n = 47) permitting an age reading resolution in years  , and the counting of daily increments from sagittal otoliths of <65 cm FL dolphinfish at X400 magnification (n = 583) permitting an age reading resolution in days, were estimated; the von Bertalanffy growth model applied to these fish gave the following parameters: L∞ = 107.8 cm FL and 120.2 cm FL, and K = 1.9 yr-1 and 1.56 yr-1, for males and females respectively. The maximum age observed was 2 years. Size at 50% maturity for fish 10-131 cm FL (n = 1376) was 58.9 cm FL and 62.5 cm FL for males and females, respectively. The sex ratio for the fish sampled from the FAD fishery (10.5-131 cm FL) was 1:1.54 (M:F) and for dolphinfish sampled from the surface longline fishery (91-130 cm FL) was 1:0.76 (M:F).  Back-calculated hatch dates from age-0 dolphinfish (n = 518) suggested that spawning occurs from June to September with the highest levels in June. This study is the first to use dorsal spines to determine the age of adult dolphinfish.

ABSTRACT Two Coryphaena hippurus morphotypes (dourado and palombeta) are found along the Brazilian coast and are considered by Rio de Janeiro’s fisherman and fishmongers as two different species. Furthermore, these morphotypes are commercialized under different values and suffer different fishing pressure. Therefore, a definition of their taxonomic status is an important economic and biological matter. In order to investigate this problem, allozyme electrophoresis method was undertaken for seventeen loci on 117 individuals of C. hippurus sampled at Cabo Frio/RJ (Brazil). The data indicate homogeneity between the morphotypes gene pools. Nevertheless, differences were found for genetic variation among dourado and palombeta, especially due to alcohol dehydrogenase locus. Natural selection hypothesis is discussed in explaining these findings.

Fish aggregating devices (FADs) have been widely used by commercial fisheries to increase the catchability of pelagic stocks in the open sea. FADs have the potential to enhance nearshore small-scale fisheries where stocks are often overfished. This study examined changes in catch composition, abundance, catch and effort, and aspects of diversity in Kenya's nearshore coastal fisheries after deployment of anchored fish aggregating devices (AFADs). The study combined both fishery independent and dependent methods in assessing changes in fish assemblages post-deployment. Results showed orders of magnitude increase in length, weight, commercial value, and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of landed catch after deployment of FADs suggesting that FADs had a positive effect on the local fishery. Species richness at FAD sites increased post-deployment (n = 281) compared to pre-deployment values (n = 223). Simultaneous use of several complementary structural indices may be required in order to accurately describe and monitor fish assemblages around the FADs. The findings suggest that AFADs are capable of creating both short and long-term impacts on livelihoods, with the potential to deflect pressure on the overfished nearshore fish stocks. However, more research will be needed on redistribution of fish around FADs, design and placement configuration, and site selection amongst others.

Tulisan ini menyajikan tentang status perikanan huhate di Bitung meliputi deskripsi unit penangkapan, daerah penangkapan, komposisi hasil tangkapan, catch per unit of effort, dan ukuran ikan pertama kali tertangkap. Data dikumpulkan selama tahun 2004 sampai dengan 2005. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa huhate yang terdapat di Bitung dioperasikan dengan kapal penangkapan yang terbuat dari kayu berukuran 50 sampai dengan 80 GT. Daerah penangkapan di sekitar lokasi rumpon di Laut Sulawesi dan Laut Maluku. Hasil tangkapan yang diperoleh terdiri atas cakalang (Katsuwonus pelamis), madidihang (Thunnus albacares), baby tuna (Thunnus spp.), dan tongkol (Auxis spp.) serta hasil tangkapan sampingan yaitu lemadang (Coryphaena hippurus) dan sunglir (Elagatis bipinnulatus). Hasil analisis catch per unit of effort diperoleh bahwa nilai catch per unit of effort baby tuna (Thunnus spp.) mengalami kenaikan pada bulan Agustus 2004, dan cakalang (Katsuwonus pelamis) mengalami kenaikan pada bulan September 2004. Hasil analisis terhadap ukuran pertama kali cakalang (Katsuwonus pelamis) tertangkap oleh huhate 49,3 FLcm. Ukuran ini lebih panjang dibandingkan ukuran pertama kali cakalang (Katsuwonus pelamis) matang gonad. Sedangkan hasil analisis terhadap ukuran pertama kali madidihang (Thunnus albacares) tertangkap oleh huhate 51,6 FLcm. Ukuran ini lebih pendek dibandingkan ukuran pertama kali madidihang (Thunnus albacares) matang gonad. This paper presents the status of pole and line fishery in Bitung of North Sulawesi, consisting of description of fishing gear, fishing ground, catch composition, catch per unit of effort, and length at first capture. Data were collected during the period of 2004 until 2005. Results show that the pole and line in Bitung operated by wooden vessels of 50 until 80 GT. The fishing grounds were the waters around FADs location in Sulawesi Sea and Maluku Sea. Catch composition consists of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellow fin tuna (Thunnus albacares), baby tuna (Thunnus spp.), and frigate tuna (Auxis spp.), while the bycatch consisted of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulatus). Catch per unit of effort analysis shows that catch per unit of effort value of baby tuna (Thunnus spp.) increased on August 2004, whereas catch per unit of effort value of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) increased on September 2004. The length at first capture of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) was 49,3 FLcm. The catch size was bigger than the length at first maturity for skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). The length at first capture of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) was 51,6 FLcm. This catch size was smaller than the length at first maturity for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares).

The power output and propulsive efficiency of swimming bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were determined from a hydromechanical model. The propulsive movements were filmed as dolphins swam in large pools. Dolphins swam at velocities of 1.2-6.0 m s-1. Propulsion was provided by dorsoventral oscillations of the posterior body and flukes. The maximum angle of attack of the flukes showed a linear decrease with velocity, whereas the frequency of the propulsive cycle increased linearly with increasing velocity. Amplitude was 20 % of body length and remained constant with velocity. Propulsive efficiency was 0.81. The thrust power computed was within physiological limits. After correction for effects due to swimming depth, the coefficient of drag was found to be 3.2 times higher than the theoretical minimum assuming turbulent boundary conditions. The motions of the body and flukes are primarily responsible for the increased drag. This analysis supports other studies that indicate that bottlenose dolphins, although well adapted for efficient high- performance swimming, show no unusual hydrodynamic performance.
