Pattern analysis data are presented for a number of tree species populations sampled from two sites located in dry sclerophyll forest within the Ku-ring-gai Chase park of New South Wales. The distributions proved to be predominantly contagious or random, with regularity occurring only occasionally. Observed variations in the degree of aggregation exhibited by a species were taken into account in interpreting pattern analysis curves. The relation of pattern analysis data to sample quadrat data fitted to known mathematical models is extremely variable, and it is shown that pattern at block sizes other than the one under consideration may suppress the appearance of deviations from randomness at block sizes which do show contagion when sampled with randomly placed quadrats. The possible origins of contagious distributions in eucalypt forest are briefly discussed.

Fruit biomass and frugivore abundance were quantified over 3 y in a rain forest of the south Western Ghats, India. Fruit biomass was estimated by sampling fruit fall in the primary forest, and frugivore abundance by a 2.5-km transect. A total of 645 kg ha−1 of fruit was produced annually in the forest. Only 49% of this is edible to the frugivores and the remaining 51% is in the form of non-edible husks. Mammalian frugivores outnumbered avian frugivores and the majority of the mammals were seed predators. The total fruit biomass produced at Kakachi is lower than in the lowland forest and mountain forests in the neotropics but higher than in the wet sclerophyll forest of Australia. Lower diversity of trees and edaphic factors at Kakachi could be some of the reasons for these differences. On the other hand, paucity of fleshy fruits, low density of trees producing fleshy fruits and irregular fruiting of these species, account for the low number of obligate avian frugivores at Kakachi.

Over the last decade, fire managers in Australia have embraced the concept of ‘fuel hazard’, and guides for its assessment have been produced. The reliability of these new metrics, however, remains to be determined. This study compared fuel hazard ratings generated by five assessment teams using two Australian hazard assessment methods, in two dry sclerophyll forest sites on Sydney’s urban fringe. Attributes that underpin hazard scores, such as cover and height of various fuel layers, were also assessed. We found significant differences between teams on most variables, including hazard scores. These differences were more apparent when fuel hazard assessments focussed on individual fuel layers than when teams’ assessments were summarised into an overall fuel hazard score. Ratings of surface (litter) fuel hazard were higher when one assessment method was used than when assessors employed the other; however, ratings of elevated (shrub) and bark fuel hazard were relatively consistent across assessment methods. Fuel load estimates based on the two hazard assessment methods differed considerably, with differences between teams also significant. Inconsistency in scoring fuel hazard may lead to discrepancies in a range of management applications, which in turn may affect firefighting safety and effectiveness.

The effect of the change in vegetation structure from closed rain forest to tall open forest on the small mammal assemblage was studied by live trapping at three sites where the ecotone was very narrow (> 20 m) near the southern end of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of Australia. Habitat heterogeneity was significantly higher in the mixed open forest/ecotone area than in the adjacent rain forest. There was a large change in the struture of the small mammal assemblage coincident with the vegetation discontinuity. Although the species richness of small mammals was relatively constant across the gradient, the evenness and diversity of the assemblage declined across the transition from open forest into rain forest and biomass increased, largely due to the high abundance of Rattus fuscipes in the rain forest. The results suggest that the species richness of the small mammal assemblage was not determined by the spatial heterogeneity of the vegetation struture. The species composition of the rain forest is probably related to the historical biogeography of the area whereas the species richness of the wet sclerophyll forest is probably due to a mass-area effect from the adjcant large areas of rain forest and dry sclerophyll forest. However, the evenness, and therefore the diversity of the assemblage, was strongly affected by habitat heterogeneity.

Soil moisture changes under two adjacent forest associations (Eucalyptus obliqua association in the more mesic environment, E. elaeophora association in the more xeric sites) were recorded in the Inglewood area of the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. The evidence indicated that the E. obliqua association had a higher index of evapotranspiration (Itr = Etr/Ew0.75) over most of the range of available water (soil moisture + rainfall) than the E. elaeophora association. The more mesic association consequently completely exhausted the stored soil moisture during periods of low rainfall and had to survive a drought period every year. The other association did not deplete the soil moisture reserves and in an average year, no drought occurred. Characteristic species of the more mesic association must be able to survive this drought period especially during the seedling stage.

Disease caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi was studied for 5 years in native and planted forest growing on krasnozem in the northern foothills of the Great Dividing Range at Narbethong, 100 km northwest of Melbourne. Changes in species composition were recorded for three sites carrying mature dry sclerophyll forest of Eucalyptus obliqua and Eucalyptus radiata, young plantations of E. obliqua, and young plantations of Pinus radiata. The mature ecualypts were diseased in 1974 and now are gradually dying. The young E. obliqua showed greater resistance than the older trees to the pathogen but infected trees were characterized by lower height, small leaves with reduced water potential, and an increased susceptibility to the leaf spot fungus Aulographina eucalypti. Susceptible understorey species such as Tetratheca ciliata and Epacris impressa died, but seedling regeneration of these has since occurred on one site. No species has disappeared from all three sites but T. ciliata and Daviesia latifolia almost disappeared from site 2, and the total number of plants was reduced. Species such as Leptospermum juniperinum and Platylobium formosum developed fluctuating cycles of chlorosis and die-back followed by either recovery or death. Resistant plants such as sedges, grasses and Acacia dealbata invaded the diseased forest. During the first year of the investigation 13% of the 4-year-old Pinus radiata died, but this particular site was well drained, warmer and drier than the others and the surviving pines later grew vigorously and crowded out other species. Symptoms are no longer evident on this site. The future status of the mature forest and the probable effects of disease on the young E. obliqua plantation are discussed.

Changes in the numbers and types of small birds caught in mist-nets in the understorey of dry sclerophyll forest in south-western Australia were recorded for three years after a low intensity fire. There were few changes in the species composition of the assemblage but abundances of the 6-8 most numerous and relatively sedentary species were approximately halved. Many marked individuals (22%) were recaptured up to three years after the fire. After the fire, the number of prey taxa recorded from the faeces of birds caught fell from twelve to six, and the birds ate proportionately more ants and fewer beetles. Ants eaten after the fire were smaller than those eaten before it.

The effects of varying transect width and census duration on the number of birds counted, the density estimate, number of species detected and the percentage of unidentified birds were examined in rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest at Mount Nardi in northern New South Wales. The nine combinations of three strip widths (40, 60 and 80 m) and three durations of census (24, 18 and 12 min) were compared in 200-m-long transects in each forest. The census of birds was more sensitive to changes in census duration than in strip width, and the effects were greater in the rainforest than the wet sclerophyll forest. Both the precision of the density estimates and the number of species detected were highest for the narrowest strips censused for the longest time. The bias of the density estimate varied with the treatments both within and between forests, and thus the strip transect could not be used to compare them. We suggest that variation in bias between sites may be a problem common to all transect counts of birds.
