Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), novel 1D natural materials with a unique tubular nanostructure, large aspect ratio, biocompatibility, and high mechanical strength, are promising nanofillers to improve the properties of polymers. In this review, we summarize the recent progress toward the development of polysaccharide-HNTs composites, paying attention to the main existence forms and wastewater treatment application particularly. The purification of HNTs and fabrication of the composites are discussed first. Polysaccharides, such as alginate, chitosan, starch, and cellulose, reinforced with HNTs show improved mechanical, thermal, and swelling properties. Finally, we summarize the unique characteristics of polysaccharide-HNTs composites and review the recent development of the practical applications.

Production of potable water or reclaimed water with higher quality are in demand to address water scarcity issues as well as to meet the expectation of stringent water quality standards. Forward osmosis (FO) provides a highly promising platform for energy-efficient membrane-based separation technology. This emerging technology has been recognized as a potential and cost-competitive alternative for many conventional wastewater treatment technologies. Motivated by its advantages over existing wastewater treatment technologies, the interest of applying FO technology for wastewater treatment has increased significantly in recent years. This article focuses on the recent developments and innovations in FO for wastewater treatment. An overview of the potential of FO in various wastewater treatment application will be first presented. The contemporary strategies used in membrane designs and fabrications as well as the efforts made to address membrane fouling are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the challenges and future outlook of FO for wastewater treatment are highlighted.

Practical Homemade Copper Filter by Banana Peels, Sand and Charcoal for Wastewater Treatment

Copper ions are commonly contaminated in the effluents from many electronic factory. In copper filtration, most filter types are usually expensive and causes toxic residues and creates another health and environmental problem. Therefore, this research has been developed a copper filtration approach based on homemade non-hazardous residues of banana peels, unmeshed sand, and charcoal. The results showed that baked, minced banana peels media could absorb synthetic water having copper ion at 50 ppm with filtration efficiency of 70% within 2 hr. Baked minced banana peels in combination with sand and charcoal could adsorb Copper (II) at 50 mg/ mL more than 80%. However, the swollen structure of banana peels during copper (II) filtration caused limit filtration efficiency to 4-5 hour extraction period. The tentative wastewater treatment application is, therefore, the use of bio-adsorbent for effective adsorption of toxic heavy metals from effluents open discarded from agricultural wastes in the environment.
