Port Harcourt acquired the name “Garden City” for its neatness, beauty, organisation of the buildings and well constructed road networks across the entire city; but this once beautiful city has been overtaken by garbage. Hence, the objectives of this study were to find out why the solid waste management strategies employed by the Rivers State Waste Management Agency  and their contractors are not working and provide best solutions in curbing the challenges militating against solid waste management of the city. Purposive sampling technique was used to determine the sample. Because of the time constraint and the wide area of coverage for this study; 10 areas consisting of 10 communities were selected based on their size, popularity and centrality. Oral interviews and field observation were the methods of data collection and the data obtained through oral interviews were analysed through simple coding, groupings, re-writing, transcribing and interpretations. The results revealed that the solid wastes generated are uncontrolled due to overcrowded settlements; an uncultured way of living of the residents; lack of the needed man-power and technology on the part of the solid waste contractors. It was also revealed that the Government do not carry out proper monitoring and uses unskilled and unqualified persons to carry out their jobs. It was concluded that to adequately clean up the city of Port Harcourt, the Government should stand up to their responsibility of keeping the city clean and sensitize the people on the need to package and dispose of their waste properly.

The issue of poor waste management has become a very important issue of concern to various scholars in environmental studies. Effective waste management in Port Harcourt has been seen as one of the greatest issue being faced in Rivers State. It cannot be over emphasized that the generation of waste and its adverse effect has increased overtime. This paper critically looks into the ethical implications and effects of poor waste management in Rivers state with focus on Port Harcourt. Hence, this paper was able to establish that the failure of the government to enact environmental laws and punishing those found wanting and also providing the necessary working tools for waste managers have all resulted to poor waste management. Thus, the effects of all these cannot be over emphasized. This paper makes some significant recommendations for government, waste managers and the public in general on the necessity to adopt certain ethical principles and also to sensitize the populace on proper waste management. The paper in conclusion exposes some ethical implications and effects of poor waste management in Port Harcourt and how it has resulted to the city of Port Harcourt called the Garden City now been seen as a Tattered City.

The study assesses the performance of the existing drainage facilities in some selected areas in Ilorin Metropolis of Kwara State, Nigeria. The rapid increase in urbanization, increase in population without corresponding infrastructures in the city of Ilorin have led to the increased incidence of flood as the available drainage channel cannot convey the volume of water. The study focuses on the household demograph, flooding, drainage maintenance and solid waste management strategies employed in the study areas. The methodology involves the use of questionnaires and interview method to gather information from the respondents of the study areas. The study was carried out with 200 copies of well-designed questionnaire through systematic random sampling technique in the administration. The research questions were answered using tables of frequencies and percentages, bar chat, pie chart and regression analysis for flood modelling and prediction of flood occurrence. The analysis revealed that frequent flood events in the city of Ilorin can be traced to dumping of solidwaste in the drainage system, inadequate drainage channels, poor solid waste management strategy and variables such frequency of drainage maintenance, predominant waste material and duration of drainage maintenance, made statistically significant contributions to the prediction of Flood occurrence. A model for prediction of effect of stormwater management on flood was formulated. All the variables used in the model were evaluated and it has been established that frequency of drainage maintenance makes the strongest contribution to the causes of flood (Y dependent variable) among all other significant variables, other significant variables included availability of drainage system, waste disposal mechanism, distance of available dumpsite, frequency of waste collection, agency responsible for drainage maintenance and predominant waste materials.

Solid waste management has been part of human activities right from time. Effort by the Oyo State Government in managing the collection and disposal of waste generated in Ibadan is seen in the provision of Skip bins at specific locations across the city. However, despite the provisions made by the government, an emerging trend is the dumping of refuse along the median of some major and collector roads in the city. This study aims at emphasizing a planning framework for the location of solid waste disposal infrastructure (Skip bins) through the adoption of planning standard. The aim of this study was achieved by identifying the existing skip bins within Ibadan North. More so, a spatial analysis of skip bins and resident's access to solid waste facilities within Ibadan North was deduced. Geospatial techniques were used for this study; data from primary and secondary source were also used to corroborate the geospatial findings. The study identified a total of 37 skip bins located within Ibadan North Local Government, serving the entire Ibadan North. Spatial analysis of the skip bins revealed a clustered distribution which is consequential to indiscriminate solid waste disposal within Ibadan North.   The study recommends adequate provision and location of skip bins to contribute to a cleaner and safer environment and a design blue print for Ibadan North was proposed.Keywords: GIS, Median, Nearest Neighbour Analysis (NNA), Skip Bins

This chapter aims to describe the status and challenges of waste management (WM) in Rwanda. Currently, waste is managed by the Ministry of Local Government, with the participation of private companies which are only in charge of waste collection. In the city of Kigali, waste is managed by the city of Kigali whereas in other four remaining provinces waste is managed by the districts. Implementation of waste management policy is carried out by a government-owned company called Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) Ltd. The per capita solid waste generation rate in the city of Kigali is equal to 0.57 kg/person/day. A lot of legislations and regulations on WM are in place but their enforcement is weak. The Government of Rwanda should do more in terms of enforcing WM legislations and regulations.

India is moving towards development of smart cities which requires a marked improvement in Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) to provide a clean and aesthetically appealing environment specifically in urban agglomerations. Presently India is producing around 65 million tones of municipal solid waste annually and 80% of which is dumped simply on the open ground. Even after the Solid waste management rules 2016 comes into effect there is no marked improvement in the waste management. The use of technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) and adopting a policy of smart waste – smart resources it is possible to create more robust Sustainable solid waste management systems.  IoT is a concept that connects numerous and various physical objects to the internet with the help of sensors and other wireless technologies, conceptually the process of connecting different types of devices extracting the data from them to perform an action in the context of data read. With Swatch Bharath, Clean India mission and the development of Smart cities projects the government of India is offering and encouraging a phenomenal change in waste management policies and action plans with an objective to make the waste management technically feasible, environmentally and financially sustainable. In the present study an assessment of existing waste management scenario was carried out for the semi urban location, Annamalai Nagar Special town Panchayat of Cuddalore District in Tamilnadu state.  IoT based waste management has been proposed, the ill effects of the present waste management practices and likely benefits of the application of technology enhanced IoT based waste management have been compared for the real time waste management system.

The by-product of every human activity is waste. The government initiative of “Tapat ko, linis ko” and “Basura ko, tapon ko” calls for every Filipino to be responsible for managing their solid wastes to prevent disaster properly. This survey aimed to determine the solid waste management and disaster preparedness of at-risk municipalities of Zamboanga del Norte. A descriptive method of research using a questionnaire-checklist was employed to the respondents who were considered by the purposive sampling technique. Data gathered were treated using a frequency count. Findings revealed that household waste makes up the largest bulk of waste. The majority of households have compost pit dug in the backyards as a dumping site, while government sites were used as open dumping areas of wastes generated from business establishments and offices operating in the town commercial areas. The conduct of regular monitoring of garbage disposal, checking of municipal dump site condition, and unclogging of canals littered with dumped garbage is the common solid waste management practices and flash floods disaster preparedness. Their LDRRMC team and volunteers are prepared, equipped with the necessary facilities as well as functional equipment, and readily on-call in the event natural disaster occurs as perceived by all groups of respondents.

The present alarming environmental world crisis is the uncontrolled generation and illegal dumping of solid waste (SW) that poses great harm to public health and the environment (Ali & Sion, 2014). Poor waste management may cause air, water, and soil contamination. The Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003) or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (ESWMA) had been in place for several years. However, its implementation was a challenge for every LGU, including in a highly urbanized city. Hence, the paper examined the level of implementation of the provisions and enforcement of prohibited acts on ESWMA of barangays as assessed by community leaders as a whole and according to their geographical location and income. Also, it explores the challenges encountered by the barangays and the recommendations of the community leaders in the implementation of RA 9003 and the local ordinance enacted by the city.
