Abstract Background: Despite high prevalence, food aversions are closely linked to the dietary intake of pregnant women. Thus, understanding this behavior is important in addressing the issue of maternal nutrition. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide information on the prevalence and associated factors of food aversion and its relationship with the nutritional status of pregnant women in Boricha Woreda, Sidama Zone, Southern Ethiopia, 2019.Methods: A community based mixed cross sectional study was conducted among 505 randomly selected pregnant mothers at Boricha Woreda, Southern Ethiopia from June 1-20, 2019. Pre-tested and structured face-to-face interview questionnaire and focus group discussion guide were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data respectively. The quantitative data were cleaned, coded and entered into Epi Info version 7.1.4.0 and then exported to SPSS IBM version 20 for further analysis. The qualitative data were analyzed manually using a content analysis.The bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the possible factors of food aversion. Pearson’s Chi-square test was used to assess the relationship between food aversion and nutritional status of pregnant women. AOR with the respective 95% CIs was used to declare statistical significance.Results: Nearly, seven-in-ten (69.2%) of the pregnant women were averted of at least one food. Cereal (45.9%) and enset (44.2%) were averted by majority of the participants. The mean (±SD) MUAC measurement was 22.7 (±2.4) cm. For age group 19 – 23 [AOR= 2.36, 95%CI (1.32 – 4.21)] and 24 – 28 of years [AOR= 2.84, 95% CI (1.61 – 5.01)], nausea [AOR= 1.70, 95%CI (1.10 – 2.65)] and having additional meal [AOR= 1.70, 95% CI (1.06 – 2.73)] were significantly associated with food aversion. Maternal nutritional status and food aversion was statistically significant (p-value=0.008).Conclusion: High prevalence of food aversions (69.2%) and under nutrition (34.6%) among pregnant women is found. Therefore, the Woreda Health Office needs to intensify the integration of maternal nutrition into ANC services and training of health providers as well as critical appraisal of health extension workers should also be considered.

Abstract Background: Birth preparedness and complication readiness is an approach that inspires pregnant women, their families and individuals to successfully design strategy for childbirths and deal with emergencies. In developing countries, world health organization estimates that more than 300 million women suffer from short-term and long-term complications related to pregnancy and child birth. In Ethiopia only 32% women have birth preparedness. The aim of this study is to assess practice and Associated factors of birth preparedness and complication readiness among Women Yirgalem General Hospital, Sidama Zone, Southern Ethiopia, 2019Methods: Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted from September 1st to 30th, 2019. A total of 422 pregnant women were randomly selected and interviewed by using pretested structured questionnaire. Data was entered by Epi-data version 3.1 and the analysis was done by SPSS version 21. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with birth preparedness and complication readiness.Result: From 422 study participants, 356(48.6%) (95% CI: 46.9%, 49.8%) have birth preparedness and complication readiness practice. Age of respondent ≥ 37 years (AOR =4.2, 95% C.I =1.23, 14.24) and between 25 to 30 (AOR=2.35, 95% C.I =1.1, 5.1); level of education College and above(AOR=5.59, 95% C.I 2.8, 11.2)and secondary school (AOR=9.5, 95% C.I 3.99-22); previous history of ANC follow up (AOR=4.33, 95% C.I = 2.46, 7.61) and history of birth at health facility (AOR=3.09, 95% C.I= 1.72, 5.56) where factors associated with birth preparedness and complication readiness practice. Conclusion: Relatively higher birth preparedness and complication readiness practice was observed in this study when compared with previous studies. Health extension workers and health care provider should encouraged women to actively utilize the health services and the governments with other stakeholders should works on antenatal care and institutional delivery by focusing on women those has no formal education.

Maternal nutritional status and food aversion was sstatistically significant (p-value < 0.001). Introduction Syphilis is one of the leading causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality and is one of the most important public health problems. There was no study showing syphilis serostatus and its related factors among pregnant women in the current study area. This study was aimed to assess the magnitude of syphilis serostatus and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Jinka town public health facilities. Method Institution based cross-sectional study design was conducted in Jinka town public health facilities, southern Ethiopia from the 1st July to the 1st September, 2020. A systematic sampling technique was used to select 629 study subjects. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire through face-to-face interviews and records were reviewed to check syphilis test results. Data were coded and entered by using Epi-data version 4.432 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. The binary logistic regression model was used to investigate factors associated with syphilis. A p-value of < 0.05 at multivariable analysis was considered statistically significant. Result In this study, syphilis sero-prevalence among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics was 4.8% (95% CI: 3.12, 6.48). Rural residence [AOR: 2.873; 95%CI (1.171, 7.050)], alcohol use [AOR: 3.340; 95% CI (1.354, 8.241)] and having multiple sexual partner [AOR: 5.012; 95% CI (1.929, 13.020)] were statistically significantly associated with syphilis. Conclusion Sero-prevalence of syphilis was high. Being a rural residence, having multiple sexual partners, alcohol use were factors associated with syphilis. Therefore, substantial efforts have to be made to provide regular health education for pregnant women at the antenatal clinic on the avoidance of risky behaviors and the risk of syphilis on their pregnancy.

Background: Sufficient maternal nutrition is paramount to ensure maternal and fetal wellbeing. It further determines the health of the offspring throughout the lifecycle and prevents adverse health outcomes of the upcoming generation. Therefore, dietary practice and nutritional status of pregnant women and contributing factors among pregnant women visiting antenatal care services at Mettu Karl Hospital, Southwest Ethiopia, were assessed. Methods: Facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April 2018. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to select 378 study participants. Data were collected via face to face interviews using semi-structured questionnaires. Women Dietary Diversity Score (WDDS) was measured using a qualitative 24- hr dietary recall and nutritional status was assessed by Mid-upper arm circumference measurements. Analyses were done using the statistical package of social science (SPSS version 20). Results: The prevalence of sub-optimal dietary practices was 22% and under-nutrition was 17.5%. Family size >5 [AOR=8.2, 95%CI: 12.383, 46.217] and severe food insecurity [AOR=3.661, 95%CI, 1.289, 10.394] were significantly associated with sub-optimal dietary practices. Being non married woman[AOR= 3.188, 95% CI: 1.219, 8.336], lack of formal education[AOR=9.405, 95%CI: 1.079, 81.943], lack of iron supplementation [AOR=3.189, 95%CI: 1.513, 6.720], WDDS <6 [AOR= 4.057, 95% CI: 2.157, 7.634], not taking additional meal (3+) [AOR=2.267, 95%CI: 1.211, 4.244], skipping meals [AOR=3.856, 95%CI: 1.099, 13.530) were significantly associated with under-nutrition. Conclusion and Recommendations: The present study revealed that there is a burden of suboptimal dietary practice and undernutrition among the studied participants. Predictors identified for suboptimal dietary practice were the family size and household food insecurity. Similarly, undernutrition was predicted by marital status, educational status, iron supplementation, additional meal intake, and meal skipping. Strategies should be designed at different levels by concerned bodies considering dietary practice and nutritional intake of pregnant women, with possible identified factors.
