Yam, Dioscorea spp. (L) is an important foodstuff that plays a key role in the agricultural system in Côte d'Ivoire. This plant is however subject to several diseases during its cultivation and conservation. The losses caused by rots of tubers in storage constitute a major risk for economic profitability and for the food safety of consumers. The development of an effective and environmental friendly control method has been initiated. The objective of this work is to improve the conservation of Discorea alata tubers through the use of aqueous extracts of Ocimum gratissimum and Chromolaena odorata. To do this, three different doses (33 g/l; 39 g/l and 50 g/l) of aqueous extracts of Ocimum gratissimum and Chromolaena odorata were applied to yam slices before inoculation with Colletotrichum sp. Results showed that applying different doses of aqueous plant extract to yam slices before inoculation of the fungal strain caused less rot. The aqueous extracts of the two plants showed antifungal activity against Colletotrichum sp. This antifungal activity was more effective with the 50 g/l dose of Ocimum gratissimum compared to the extract of Chromolaena odorata.

An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the District of Yamoussoukro (Central Côte d’Ivoire) in order to evaluate the biocontrol potential against fungal plant pathogens, of Euphorbiaceous plants used as medicines by the native population. Twelve (12) species were collected. The antifungal activity was assessed using the two-fold dilution method on PDA medium with ethanolic and aqueous extract derived from leaves of six plants. Results pointed out that only 70% ethanolic extracts from Alchornea cordifolia (EE13) possess fungicidal properties on both Fusarium sp. and Phytophthora sp. The antifungal activities are more effective with ethanolic extracts than aqueous extracts. With a minimal inhibitory concentration MIC = 25±0.0 mg/ml, a minimal concentration for 50% of inhibition IC50 = 10±0.05 mg/ml and a minimal fungicide concentration MFC = 200±0.0 mg/ml Fusarium sp. appears to be the most sensitive. Phytophthora sp. is less sensitive with a MIC = 50±0.0 mg/ml, an IC50 = 12±0.05 mg/ml and a MFC = 200±0.0 mg/ml. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of seven major groups of compounds among which saponins and catechin are the most abundant in aqueous extracts. Polyphenols, flavonoids, polyterpenes and sterols as well as tannins are present in both alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Alchornea cordifolia. These compounds could justify its antifungal activity and traditional use.

The Neotropical invasive plant Chromolaena odorata R.M. King and H. Robinson (Asteraceae) is a serious weed in West and Central Africa and two biological control agents that have been introduced into West Africa to help reduce its impacts on agriculture and biodiversity, have established. The stem-galling fly, Cecidochares connexa (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae), has spread widely across West Africa since its release in only Côte d’Ivoire, occurring in six countries. This study aimed to investigate whether the gall fly had spread further across West Africa and into Central Africa. Here, we surveyed C. odorata for C. connexa galls in Cameroon between October 2018 and October 2020, along roadsides, on farms, residential areas, and abandoned plots, encompassing various vegetation types. Additional surveys were conducted across four countries (Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Nigeria) in West Africa that we considered the probable pathway for the spread of the gall fly into Central Africa. Cecidochares connexa was present at five of the six locations surveyed in Cameroon, albeit in varying abundance. In Africa, these findings represent the first-ever report of C. connexa outside of West Africa. In West Africa, we recorded significant expansion in the geographic range of C. connexa, as reflected in the absent-present record of C. connexa in two locations in Nigeria and one in Ghana, as well as its occurrence in all locations surveyed in Benin Republic and Togo. Clearly, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Nigeria served as the dispersal pathway of C. connexa from the release sites in Côte d’Ivoire into Cameroon, covering over 2,300 km. Following the spread and establishment of C. connexa into Cameroon, we anticipate that it will continue to spread further into other parts of Central Africa which are climatically suitable. Cecidochares connexa is currently the only biological control agent for C. odorata in Central Africa. Given that it has significantly reduced populations of C. odorata in other countries where it has established, it is expected to have a similar impact in Central Africa.

Skin health is a concern for many people. This aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro the antioxidant activity of 10 plants used in cosmetopoeia for the maintenance of skin health. To achieve this objective, 30 extracts were tested using 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6) acid. -sulfonic) (ABTS + •) assays. The extracts studied were rich in total polyphenols, flavonoids, gallic tannins and alkaloids. For the DPPH reduction, 7 extracts including 5 methanolic and 2 aqueous extracts showed a percentage of inhibition similar to that of Vitamin C (95.79 ± 10.53%) used as a control. With ABTS, 11 extracts (5 methanol, 3 aqueous and 3 hexane) gave reduction percentages close to Trolox (95.97 ± 8.51%). These active plants could play a role in the maintaining of skin.

Aims: The present investigations describes bactericidal potential of essential oil for management of Xanthomonas albilineans (Ashby. 1929) Dowson 1943, pathogen responsible for sugarcane Leaf scald disease in Côte d'Ivoire. Study Design: the study was conducted at the Ferké 1 sugar mill and the Laboratory of Plant Physiology of Felix Houphouët BOIGNY University. Methodology: Diseased leaves specimens showing signs of X. albilineans presence were collected from sugarcane industrial plantations in Côte d'Ivoire. Pathogenicity was confirmed by observing Koch’s postulates under semi-controlled conditions. Asymptomatic leaves, obtained after 60 days of culture, were inoculated at three points by infiltration with bacterial suspension calibrated at 108 bacteria/ml. Apparition of small tan-brown necrotic lesions on the leaf blade, parallel to the veins and prolonged to the ends by a discolored vascular bundle confirmed that disease is caused by Xanthomonas albilineans. Three essential oils of aromatic plants whose antibacterial properties are recognized were used at 100; 300; 500; 1000 and 2000 ppm in comparison with Callicuivre (56% copper oxychloride) used as reference product. Results: The aqueous solutions based on these essential oils induced an inhibition zone of bacterial growth proportional to the dose applied and the incubation period. Thus, on day 5 of incubation, the essential oil solution of Ocimum gratissimum L. at 100 ppm induced an average inhibition zone diameter not significantly different from the one induced by the Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf solution at 300 ppm and the one of copper oxychloride at 1000 ppm. At 1000 ppm, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf and Ocimum gratissimum L essential oils induced equivalent inhibition rates (6 mm) that were higher than that of the control (3.5 mm). Conclusion: sugarcane varieties cultivated at the Ferké 1 sugar mill complex, despite the selection for resistance are threatened by Leaf Scald Disease, which is significantly expressed on variety R585. Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf and Ocimum gratissimum L oils have the strongest antibacterial activity and may be useful to control Leaf Scald Disease.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, hydroalcoholic products are widely used for hand disinfection. Côte d'Ivoire has also opted for this barrier measure. Ivorian markets and supermarkets have been filled with new hydroalcoholic products of various compositions and colors, certified or not by the Ivorian standardization agency. It was important to verify the antimicrobial efficacy of these hydroalcoholic products. To do this, we tested 16 hydroalcoholic products collected from supermarkets in Abidjan. The microbial load on the hands of 144 volunteers was determined before and after hand rubbing. These hydroalcoholic products were also tested for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia and Proteus mirabilis; and antifungal activity against Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium chrysogenum. The results of this study showed that hydroalcoholic products tested significantly reduced the microbial load on the hands after friction. The germ inhibition rate was between 94.99 and 99.97%. Of the 16 hydroalcoholic products, only 3 showed antibacterial and antifungal activity on all indicator strains. In contrast, 4 showed no antibacterial and antifungal activity on these strains. The low efficacy of hydroalcoholic products tested in vitro is an indicator of the lack of quality control of these products. Some of them could not therefore guarantee the health security of the populations.
