Background: Peer support as a component of chronic disease management strategy is fast gaining prominence especially in resource poor settings. It is apt to X-ray the effects if any, of support group memberships on the quality of life (QoL) of HIV positive clients in our clime. This study aims to determine and compare the QoL of HIV positive support group and non-support group members in a tertiary hospital in Anambra state, Nigeria. Methods: This was an institution based comparative study of 482 HIV positive clients selected using a two-stage sampling. Data were collected by interview using WHOQOLHIV-Bref and semi-structured questionnaire, while data were analysed with statistical package for social sciences version 22.0. Chi square, Pearson chi square and t-test were applied as appropriate to determine statistically significant associations between variables. Level of statistical significance was set at p value of <0.05.Results: Differences between the two comparison groups include: duration of HAART treatment (p=0.003), in the physical domain (p=0.043), psychological domain (p≤0.001), and the level of independence domain (p≤0.001). More of support group members had good QoL in the physical domain (p=0.04,), psychological domain (p=0.001), level of independence domain (p≤0.001) and reported satisfaction with their perceived health status (p=0.000). Clients who were members of support group and those that reported high level of satisfaction with their perceived health status in most domains had higher QoL scores. Conclusions: We recommend continued counselling and health education on the effect of participation in support group and positive perception cum positive living on QoL.

Abstract Introduction We aimed to identify clinical factors affecting condition-specific health related quality of life (HRQOL) domains in children born with esophageal atresia (EA). This can facilitate preventive care to risk groups of HRQOL impairments. Materials and Methods A total of 124 Swedish and German families of EA children answered the validated EA-QOL questionnaires (response rate 68%), for evaluation of three HRQOL domains in children 2 to 7 years old (53 parents) and four HRQOL domains in children 8 to 17 years old (62 children/71 parents). Clinical data were collected through medical records and a questionnaire. Statistics included between—group analysis, univariable and stepwise multivariable regression analysis, p < 0.05. Results Between 2 to 7 years, no primary anastomosis (p = 0.022) and female gender (p = 0.026) predicted worse scores related to “physical health and treatment,” and gastrostomy insertion related to “eating” (p = 0.0001), and “social isolation and stress” (p = 0.001). Between 8 to 17 years, no primary anastomosis (child report), prematurity, esophageal dilatation (parent report) predicted poor HRQOL related to “eating” (p < 0.05), associated anomalies to “body perception” (p = 0.031, parent report), female gender (p = 0.018, child report) and severe EA (p = 0.011 child report, p = 0.004 parent report) to “social relationships,” and severe EA predicted worse “health and well-being” scores (p = 0.004, parent report). An increased number of digestive symptoms (difficulty swallowing food, heartburn, and vomiting), lowered all EA-QOL domain scores in both age groups (p < 0.001). An increased number of respiratory problems (cough, wheezing, airway infections. breathlessness, and chest tightness), lowered scores in two HRQOL domains among children 2 to 7 years (p < 0.05). Conclusion Impairments within condition-specific HRQOL domains in EA children are found in congenital and surgical subgroups, and notably related to digestive symptoms throughout childhood.

HIV / AIDS sufferers overcome various problems both physical, social, and emotional. If emotional problems such as decreased arousal succeed, stress, confusion, depression, are not immediately addressed then it can reduce the quality of life of people with HIV / AIDS. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of depression levels with the quality of life of people with HIV / AIDS in the Gajah Mungkur Wonogiri Peer Support Group. The study used descriptive correlative with a cross sectional study design. The sample took with a consecutive sampling, with the sample size of 116 respondents. There were 14 respondents did not arrive when the data was taken. The instruments in this study used the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and WHOQOLHIV-BREF questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square test. This study result showed that depression level of respondent were 25 respondents did not experience depression, 21 respondents (18.1%) had good perception quality, the remaining 4 respondents had poor quality of life, while 36 respondents experienced an increase in poor quality of life as many as 19 respondents (16.4%). Respondents who experience severe depression as many as 33 respondents (28.4%) more have a poor quality of life as many as 20 respondents (17.2%). The result showed that p-value = 0.001, which means there was a relationship between the level of depression with the quality of life of people with HIV / AIDS in the Gajah Mungkur Peer Support Group. Keywords: depression; HIV / AIDS; quality of life ABSTRAK Penderita HIV/AIDS mengalami berbagai masalah baik fisik, sosial, maupun emosional. Introduction: As breast cancer survivors have increased, improving quality of life of the survivors becomes an important issue. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among menopausal symptoms, depression, and quality of life and to identify the factors affecting the quality of life in premenopausal women with breast cancer. Method: This was a descriptive, correlational study using structured questionnaires for 90 premenopausal women with breast cancer attending the outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Korea. Results: Menopausal symptoms ( r = −0.770, p < .001) and depression ( r = −0.715, p < .001) negatively affected the participants’ quality of life. The major factors affecting quality of life were employment ( t = −2.065, p = .042), depression ( t = −2.375, p = .020), and menopausal symptoms ( t = −3.863, p < .001). Menopausal symptoms were the strongest negative factor (β = −.508) affecting quality of life. Discussion and Conclusions: Developing nursing intervention congruent with the culture of Korean breast cancer women with treatment-induced menopausal symptoms is a high priority.
