Abstract A systematic electrochemical study is carried out on electrolytes with superhigh concentrations of fructose. The effect of fructose concentration on the viscosity and conductivity of electrolyte are determined and analyzed using Walden rule and the theory of rate process. The diffusion rates of proton and cupric cation are calculated from the peak current in cyclic voltammogram on stationary electrode and the limiting current on rotating electrodes. Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize the hydrogen bond network in water and the effect of fructose concentration on such network. Rhenium deposition with different fructose concentrations is studied on rotating disc electrodes. X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and four point probe measurements at cryogenic temperature are used to study the deposition rate, crystallographic structure, and superconductivity of film, respectively.

The surface chirality was investigated in magnetoelectrodeposition (MED) of copper films on micro-disc electrodes with the diameters of 100 and 25 µm. The MED was conducted in the magnetic fields of 1–5 T, which were parallel or antiparallel to the ionic currents. In the case of 100 µm-electrodes, the MED films prepared in 2 and 3 T exhibited odd chirality for the magnetic field polarity, as expected in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) vortex model. However, the films prepared in the higher fields of 4 and 5 T exhibited breaking of odd chirality. In the case of the 25 µm-electrode, the broken odd chirality was observed in 2 and 3 T. These results indicate that the strong vertical MHD flows induce the breaking of odd chirality. The mapping of chiral symmetry on the axes of the magnetic field and electrode diameter demonstrate that the odd chirality could be easily broken by the fluctuation of micro-MHD vortices.

The representations of different fingers in the sensorimotor cortex are largely overlapped, which necessitate a good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high spatial resolution to classify individual finger movements from one hand. Electroencephalography (EEG) recorded with disc electrodes has low SNR and poor spatial resolution. The surface Laplacian has been applied to EEG to improve the spatial resolution and selectivity of the surface electrical activity recording. Tri-polar concentric ring electrodes (TCREs) were shown to estimate the Laplacian automatically with better spatial resolution than disc electrodes. For this work, movement-related potentials (MRPs) were recorded from four TCREs and disc electrodes while 13 subjects performed real and imaginary finger movements. The MRP signals recorded with the TCREs have significantly less mutual information and coherence between neighboring locations compared to disc electrodes. The results also show that signals from TCREs generated higher accuracy compared to disc electrodes. It further shows that TCREs using temporal EEG data as features yield an average accuracy of [Formula: see text]% and [Formula: see text]% for real and imaginary finger movements, respectively, which is significantly higher than utilizing EEG spectral power changes in [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] bands as features. Similarly, with the disc electrodes, it achieved highest accuracy of [Formula: see text]% and [Formula: see text]% for real and imaginary finger movements, respectively, with temporal EEG data feature.

Epilepsy affects approximately 67 million people worldwide with up to 75% from developing countries. Diagnosing epilepsy using electroencephalogram (EEG) is complicated due to its poor signal-to-noise ratio, high sensitivity to various forms of artifacts, and low spatial resolution. Laplacian EEG signal via novel and noninvasive tripolar concentric ring electrodes (tEEG) is superior to EEG via conventional disc electrodes due to its unique capabilities, which allow automatic attenuation of common movement and muscle artifacts. In this work, we apply exponentially embedded family (EEF) to show feasibility of automatic detection of gamma band high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) in tEEG data from two human patients with epilepsy as a step toward the ultimate goal of using the automatically detected HFOs as auxiliary features for seizure onset detection to improve diagnostic yield of tEEG for epilepsy. Obtained preliminary results suggest the potential of the approach and feasibility of detecting HFOs in tEEG data using the EEF based detector with high accuracy. Further investigation on a larger dataset is needed for a conclusive proof.
