Abstract Background Animal bites are a major public health problem. The more serious the bite wound is, the higher the risk of developing rabies is. This study aimed to investigate the severity of wounds among animal bite victims and identify the influencing factors in Wuhan, China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1015 animal bite victims visiting rabies prevention clinics. We performed a face-to-face interview to collect information on the exposure category of the bite wound, the type of the offending animal, exposure-to-risk situations, etc. Factors associated with exposure categories were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results Five hundred and sixty-four (55.57%) cases were category III exposures, 418 (41.18%) were category II exposures, and 33 (3.25%) were category I exposures. People who were hurt by their own domestic animals (odds ratio [OR] = 1.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14–2.10), and those exposed to animals unvaccinated against rabies (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.08–1.95) had a higher risk for category III exposures. Respondents who did not know the fatality of rabies were more likely to be injured seriously compared to those who knew that rabies is fatal, and the OR was 1.40 (95% CI, 1.05–1.86). Conclusions This study showed that factors associated with the severity of bite wounds mainly included types of the offending animal, vaccination status of the animal, and knowledge of rabies fatality. Educational programs and awareness-raising campaigns should be provided to decrease severe animal bites, especially targeting pet owners and those with limited rabies knowledge.

Abstract: Maxillofacial trauma can be caused by various external and internal factors. The intervention to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in community social activities that contributes to the factors causing maxillofacial trauma during the pandemic. This study was aimed to obtain the factors that caused maxillofacial trauma before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a literature review study using three databases, namely Google Scholar, Pubmed, and ClinicalKey, and the keywords "maxillofacial trauma", "etiology factors", and "COVID-19". The literatures were selected by using inclusion and exclusion criteria. A critical assessment was carried out and 11 literatures were obtained consisting of retrospective and cross-sectional studies. The results showed that the factors causing maxillofacial trauma in the period of before and during the pandemic belonged of three categories, as follows: falls, accidents, and violence. They consisted in detail of fall, traffic accident, sports injurie, industrial accident, suicide attempt, interpersonal violence, domestic violence. and animal-bite wound. In conclusion, fall is the most dominant etiology factor before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, there is a difference in the factors causing maxillofacial trauma before and during the COVID-19 pandemic which is attempted suicide.Keywords: maxillofacial trauma; etiology; COVID-19 pandemic Abstrak: Trauma maksilofasial dapat disebabkan oleh berbagai faktor eksternal maupun internal. Adanya intervensi pencegahan pandemi COVID-19 menyebabkan perubahan aktifitas sosial masyarakat yang berkontribusi dalam berubahnya faktor penyebab trauma maksilofasial pada saat pandemi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat faktor penyebab trauma maksilofasial pada masa sebelum dan saat pandemi COVID-19. Jenis penelitian ialah suatu literature review. Pencarian data melalui tiga database yaitu Google Scholar, Pubmed dan ClinicalKey menggunakan kata kunci trauma maksilofasial, faktor penyebab, dan COVID-19. Literatur diseleksi menggunakan kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi, dilakukan penilaian kelayakan dan diperoleh 11 literatur dengan desain studi retrospektif dan potong lintang. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan factor-faktor penyebab trauma maksilofasial pada masa sebelum dan saat pandemi tergolong atas tiga kategori yaitu: jatuh, kecelakaan, dan kekerasan, yang secara detil terdiri atas jatuh, kecelakaan lalu lintas, cedera olahraga, kecelakaan industri, percobaan bunuh diri, kekerasan interpersonal, kekerasan dalam rumah tangga, dan luka gigitan hewan. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah jatuh merupakan faktor penyebab trauma maksilofasial paling dominan pada masa sebelum dan saat pandemi COVID-19. Perbedaan faktor penyebab trauma maksilofasial pada masa sebelum dan saat pandemi COVID-19 yaitu percobaan bunuh diri.Kata kunci: trauma maksilofasial; etiologi; pandemi COVID-19

Naja atra is a major venomous snake found in Taiwan. The bite of this snake causes extensive wound necrosis or necrotizing soft tissue infection. Conventional microbial culture-based techniques may fail to identify potential human pathogens and render antibiotics ineffective in the management of wound infection. Therefore, we evaluated 16S Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to identify bacterial species in the oropharynx of N. atra. Using conventional microbial culture methods and the VITEK 2 system, we isolated nine species from snakebite wounds. On the basis of the 16S Sanger sequencing of bacterial clones from agar plates, we identified 18 bacterial species in the oropharynx of N. atra, including Morganella morganii, Proteus vulgaris, and Proteus mirabilis, which were also present in the infected bite wound. Using NGS of 16S metagenomics, we uncovered more than 286 bacterial species in the oropharynx of N. atra. In addition, the bacterial species identified using 16S Sanger sequencing accounted for only 2% of those identified through NGS of 16S metagenomics. The bacterial microbiota of the oropharynx of N. atra were modeled better using NGS of 16S metagenomics compared to microbial culture-based techniques. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Proteus penneri were also identified in the NGS of 16S metagenomics. Understanding the bacterial microbiota that are native to the oropharynx of N. atra, in addition to the bite wound, may have additional therapeutic implications regarding empiric antibiotic selection for managing N. atra bites.

Naja atra bites cause severe soft tissue injury and are prone to wound infections. The pathogens of Naja atra bite-wound infections are highly variable in different geographical regions. Here, we report the first coinfection with Shewanella algae and Morganella morganii from a Naja atra bite wound with resistome analysis using whole genome sequencing.

A 51-year-old man with 3-month unhealing cat bite wound was diagnosed with sporotrichosis, a subacute-to-chronic infection caused by the worldwide endemic, dimorphic fungus Sporothrix globosa. The case would help clinicians to raise awareness of human sporotrichosis due to cat bites, which remains rare and is likely to be underrecognized and misdiagnosed.
