This experimental study presents concrete-filled double-skin tubular columns and demonstrates their expected advantages. These columns consist of an outer steel tube, an inner steel tube, and concrete sandwiched between two tubes. The influence of the outer-to-inner tube dimension ratio, outer tube to thickness ratio, and type of inner tube material (steel, PVC pipe) on the ultimate axial capacity of concrete-filled double-skin tubular columns is studied. It is found that the yield strength of the inner tube does not significantly affect the ultimate axial capacity of concrete-filled double-skin tubular composites. With the replacement of the inner tube of steel with a PVC pipe, on average, less than 10% strength is reduced, irrespective of size and dimensions of the steel tube. Hence, the cost of a project can be reduced by replacing inner steel tubes with a PVC pipes. Finally, the experimental results are compared with the existing design methods presented in AISC 360-16 (2016), GB51367 (2019), and EC4 (2004). It is found from the comparison that GB51367 (2019) gives better results, followed by AISC (2016) and EC4 (2004).

The energy absorption characteristic of steel tube material and concrete material is an important indicator to reflect the impact resistance of circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) members. In order to efficiently simulate the material energy absorption of the steel tube and concrete under lateral impact, a nonlinear finite element model considering the material strain rate of the circular CFST member was established and validated based on the drop weight tests. Then, the energy absorption mechanism of circular CFST members subjected to lateral impact was investigated including the revelation of the energy absorption process and the determination of the energy absorption distribution for the steel tube material and concrete material, which are obtained respectively based on the comprehensive analysis of dynamic response and innovative establishment of the segmented numerical model. In addition, the influence of impact momentum on energy absorption process and the effect of impact location on energy absorption distribution are further carried out. The observations of this investigation can provide reference for the anti-impact design and damage reinforcement of circular CFST members subjected to lateral impact.

AbstractOxidation of the Fe-base alloy T22 in humid air at 500 °C was investigated. The samples were exposed for up to 1000 h at 1 bar and 20 bar. The influence of three furnace tube materials, alumina, ET45 and quartz glass, on the oxide scale morphology was investigated. Samples and their cross sections were examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe micro analysis and Raman spectroscopy. Multilayered oxide scales consisting of hematite, magnetite and Fe–Cr spinel were found on all samples. However, the composition and morphology of the oxide scales depend on the furnace tube material and on the system pressure. The system pressure is assumed to change the reaction equilibria and adsorption rates. The tube material changed the initial gas composition by formation of volatile Cr species. This volatilization rate increased at higher system pressures.
