This research analyses the strain behaviour of fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) in the event of a creep episode. The analysis of creep experienced by FRC specimens during the test reflects better performance than that predicted by the EHE-08 standard. The authors propose a formulation for the evaluation of creep strain undergone by FRC. During the research, the evolution of the modulus of elasticity of FRC after a creep episode is analysed. After the test campaign, it can be concluded that FRC loaded at an earlier age stiffens after a creep episode. After the creep test is completed, the delayed elastic strain undergone by FRC is analysed and it is observed that FRC loaded at an earlier age undergoes less deformation. The authors propose a formulation for the evaluation of the delayed elastic strain undergone by FRC after a creep episode.

In this investigation, the uniaxial short-term creep tests with multi-step loading were conducted on the sandstone-coal composite samples, and the characteristics of creep strength, creep deformation, acoustic emission (AE), and creep failure of composite samples were studied, respectively. The creep strength of the composite sample decreased with the stress-level duration, which was mainly determined by the coal and influenced by the interactions with the sandstone. The creep deformation and damage of sandstone weakened the deformation and damage accumulation within the coal, resulting in the larger strength for the composite sample compared with the pure coal sample. The axial creep strain of composite sample generally increased with the stress-level or the stress-level duration under same conditions. The AE characteristics of composite sample were related to the creep strain rate, the stress level, the stress level duration, and the local failure or fracture during creep loading. The micro or macro failure and fracture within the composite sample caused the rise in the axial creep strains and the frequency and intensity of AE signals, especially the macro failure and fracture. The creep failures of composite samples mainly occurred within the coal with the splitting ejection failure accompanied by the local shear failure, and no obvious failures were found within the sandstone. The coal in the composite sample became more broken with the stress-level duration.

Based on molecular dynamics simulations, the creep behaviors of nanocrystalline Ni before and after the segregation of Mo atoms at grain boundaries are comparatively investigated with the influences of external stress, grain size, temperature, and the concentration of Mo atoms taken into consideration. The results show that the creep strain rate of nanocrystalline Ni decreases significantly after the segregation of Mo atoms at grain boundaries due to the increase of the activation energy. The creep mechanisms corresponding to low, medium, and high stress states are respectively diffusion, grain boundary slip and dislocation activities based on the analysis of stress exponent and grain size exponent for both pure Ni and segregated Ni-Mo samples. Importantly, the influence of external stress and grain size on the creep strain rate of segregated Ni-Mo samples agrees well with the classical Bird-Dorn-Mukherjee model. The results also show that segregation has little effect on the creep process dominated by lattice diffusion. However, it can effectively reduce the strain rate of the creep deformation dominated by grain boundary behaviors and dislocation activities, where the creep rate decreases when increasing the concentration of Mo atoms at grain boundaries within a certain range.

AbstractThe influence of stress state on the creep behavior of an artificial cemented sand resembling soft rocks was evaluated. The stress state was characterized by a mean stress and a stress ratio. The cyclic stress-induced creep test was adopted in this study, where the cyclic loading involved a constant deviator stress and a cyclic mean stress (or confining pressure) of the same amplitude and period; the test indicated similar trends as the conventional creep test with a shorter time to creep failure at less creep strain. Results showed that when the creep strain is large enough, the greater the creep strain accumulates, the smaller is the post-creep strength. Under the same number of cyclic loads, with the same stress ratio, the creep strain and the steady-state strain rate in the secondary creep stage increase with increasing mean stress; with the same mean stress, the two said parameters also increase with increasing stress ratio. It was also found that the time to reach creep failure decreases with decreasing mean stress and increasing stress ratio. The stress ratio is proposed to account for the tendency of a stress state to cause failure, and the cyclic variation of mean stress, which is equivalent to the effective mean stress with pore water pressure being zero in the tests conducted, reflects the effective stress state of a geomaterial under fluctuations of groundwater table. Under a fixed deviator stress, a soft porous geomaterial subjected to cyclic variation of effective mean stress may yield contraction and could lead to failure if the stress ratio is high. The findings can help explain the mechanism of ground subsidence or slope failure subjected to cyclic fluctuations of groundwater table.

Abstract Numerical analysis of electromigration in solder joints has mainly examined ball grid arrays (BGAs) in flip-chip packages, and few numerical study has been reported on solder joints in power modules. This report describes an electromigration analysis of solder joints for power modules with a Si-based power device, which are still widely used today, using an electrical-thermal-stress-atomic coupled analysis. To evaluate electromigration, a solder joint with a power device and a substrate as used in power modules was simulated. Due to current crowding, the current density at the edge of the solder joint exceeded the electromigration threshold even in Si-based power modules. Unlike general electromigration phenomena, the vacancy concentration increased at the center and decreased at the edges of the solder joint, regardless of whether it was on the cathode side or anode side. The vacancy concentration clearly increased with increasing current density and size ratio. Creep strain increased significantly with increasing current density, temperature, and size ratio. The largest change in vacancy concentration and creep strain was at the anode edge where current crowding occurred. In addition, we modeled the two-dimensional behavior of metal atoms passing through the interface of the solder joint. The expansion of intermetallic compound was accelerated by increasing the temperature and current density.

Utilizing underground coal gasification cavities for carbon capture and sequestration provides a potentially economic and sustainable solution to a vexing environmental and energy problem. The thermal influence on creep properties and long-term permeability evolution around the underground gasification chamber is a key issue in UCG-CCS operation in containing fugitive emissions. We complete multi-step loading and unloading creep tests with permeability measurement at confining stresses of 30 MPa on pre-cracked sandstone specimens thermally heat-treated to 250, 500, 750 and 1000 °C. Observations indicate a critical threshold temperature of 500 °C required to initiate thermally-induced cracks with subsequent strength reduction occurring at 750 °C. Comparison of histories of creep, visco-elastic and visco-plastic strains highlight the existence of a strain jump at a certain deviatoric stress level—where the intervening rock bridge between the twin starter-cracks is eliminated. As the deviatoric stress level increases, the visco-plastic strains make up an important composition of total creep strain, especially for specimens pre-treated at higher temperatures, and the development of the visco-plastic strain leads to the time-dependent failure of the rock. The thermal pre-treatment produces thermal cracks with their closure resulting in increased instantaneous elastic strains and instantaneous plastic strains. With increasing stress ratio, the steady-state creep rates increase slowly before the failure stress ratio but rise suddenly over the final stress ratio to failure. However, the pre-treatment temperature has no clear and apparent influence on steady creep strain rates. Rock specimens subject to higher pre-treatment temperatures exhibit higher permeabilities. The pre-existing cracks close under compression with a coplanar shear crack propagating from the starter-cracks and ultimately linking these formerly separate cracks. In addition, it is clear that the specimens pre-treated at higher temperatures accommodate greater damage.

Infallible creep rupture life prediction of high  temperature steel needs long hours of robust  testing over a domain of stress and temperature. A substantial amount of effort has been made to  develop alternative methods to reduce the time  and cost of testing. This study presents a finite  element analysis coupled with a ductility based  damage model to predict creep rupture time  under the influence of multiaxial stress state of  ex-service and as-received Grade 91 steel at 873 K. Three notched bar samples with different  acuity ratios of 2.28, 3.0 and 4.56 are modelled in commercial Finite Element (FE) software,  ABAQUS v6.14 in order to induce different stress  state levels at notch throat area and investigate  its effect on rupture time. The strain-based  ductility exhaustion damage approach is  employed to quantify the damage state. The  multiaxial ductility of the material that is  required to determine the damage state is  estimated using triaxiality-ductility Cock and  Ashby relation. Further reduction of the ductility  due to the different creep mechanisms over a  short and long time is also accounted for in the  prediction. To simulate the different material conditions: ex-service and as-received material,  different creep coefficients (A) have been  assigned in the numerical modelling. In the case  of ex-service material, using mean best fit data  of minimum creep strain rate gives a good life  prediction, while for new material, the lower  bound creep coefficient should be employed to  yield a comparable result with experimental  data. It is also notable that ex-service material  deforms faster than as-received material at the  same stress level. Moreover, higher acuity  provokes damage to concentrate on the small  area around the notch, which initiates higher  rupture life expectancy. It also found out that,  the stress triaxiality and the equivalent creep  strain influence the location of damage initiation  around the notch area.
