This chapter treats “samizdat” (self-publishing) and “magnitizdat” (audio tape self-publishing) in the late Soviet Union via the concept of the “voice.” Komaromi discusses a select set of examples including guitar poetry; Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago; Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago, Evgeniia Ginzburg’s camp memoirs; poetry at Maiakovskii Square; and the texts of Leningrad second culture. These examples facilitate exploration of the way samizdat and magnitizdat related to official culture, even as they expanded the range of late Soviet culture far beyond what was allowed in print. They also make it possible to analyze the way samizdat and magnitizdat voices mediated between silence and speech, matter and spirit, presence and absence, and the individual and the collective, creating new ways for Soviet citizens to express themselves and be heard by one another.

Multimedia archives face the problem of obsolescing and degrading analogue media (e.g., speech and music recordings and video art). In response, researchers in the field have recently begun studying ad hoc tools for the preservation and access of historical analogue documents. This paper investigates the active preservation process of audio tape recordings, specifically focusing on possible means for compensating equalization errors introduced in the digitization process. If the accuracy of corrective equalization filters is validated, an archivist or musicologist would be able to experience the audio as a historically authentic document such that their listening experience would not require the recovery of the original analogue audio document or the redigitization of the audio. Thus, we conducted a MUSHRA-inspired perception test (n = 14) containing 6 excerpts of electronic music (3 stimuli recorded NAB and 3 recorded CCIR). Participants listened to 6 different equalization filters for each stimulus and rated them in terms of similarity. Filters included a correctly digitized “Reference,” an intentionally incorrect “Foil” filter, and a subsequent digital correction of the Foil filter that was produced with a MATLAB script. When stimuli were collapsed according to their filter type (NAB or CCIR), no significant differences were observed between the Reference and MATLAB correction filters. As such, the digital correction appears to be a promising method for compensation of equalization errors although future study is recommended, specifically containing an increased sample size and additional correction filters for comparison.

What is phonography? In this essay, Christopher DeLaurenti, a phonographer with three decades of experience, maps an axiomatic 13-lesson pedagogy through an abbreviated history of field recording, from Jesse Walter Fewkes in 1890 to Tony Schwartz in the early 1960s. This paper surveys various meanings and uses of the term phonography from a text published in 1701 to the formation in 2000 of the phonography listserv, an online community of makers of field recordings. The author, himself an early member of the phonography listserv, discusses three traits to define phonography as a community in the early 2000s: inexpensive recording equipment; a community of knowledge; and the “easy fidelity” made possible by portable and lightweight Digital Audio Tape (DAT) and MiniDisc (MD) recorders. The author contrasts the traits of phonography with elements of soundscape composition as articulated by Barry Truax, Hildegard Westerkamp, and Andra McCartney. The paper concludes by proposing possible elements of post-phonography, including remote control recording, the possibility of voice print identification, and the generation of unimagined data.

This qualitative study was planned to investigate into parental satisfaction and engagement in the availability of Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) to their deaf young children studying in Govt. Deaf and Defective Hearing Schools (GDDHS) in Punjab, Pakistan. The parents of 989 deaf young children constituted the population of study. A representative sample of parents of eighty-two children who gave their consent to participate in the study was taken from ten schools at district level located in four zones of the Punjab. A semi structured and open ended interview protocol consisting of three parts (Part 1=Demographic information about children and their parents, Part 2= Parental Contentment, Part 3= Engagement of parents) was employed. The interviews were recorded on audio tape, Afterwards, transcription was made and codes were assigned. Thematic analysis was done and data was presented in tabulated form. Frequencies were run. Major findings showed that majority of parents were not contented with speech, speech reading, and reading identification skills in their children. Majority of them were not involved in teaching to their children due to being illiterate. They had no guidance about teaching to their young deaf children. On the basis of results, suggestions to Punjab Special Education Department were made.

The main purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and analyze the attitude of secondary school head teachers towards their teachers’ professional ethics perspective. To achieve the objectives, six head teachers (3 males and 3 females) and twenty teachers (10 males and 10 females) were conveniently selected as participants of the study from Multan city. The data were collected through a semi structured interview protocol carrying nine questions and seven focused group discussion questions after taking appointments from the participants. The tape-recorded interviews and discussions were transcribed and thereafter the researchers made thorough examination of data in order to gauge trends of respondents’ views. Furthermore, key ideas were identified, categorized and then condensed. The identified key ideas were codified and organized into themes. All the interviews were conducted in national language Urdu. Each interview lasted about 30-40 minutes. The researchers used the audio-tape for discussions but also took the written notes of the heads and their teachers. It was found that all teachers had positive attitude towards professional ethics. The study concluded that teachers who act more professionally and also aware of their duties, relatively observe teachers’ professional code of ethics both in and outside the class. It was recommended that, in order to enhance teachers’ knowledge of the professional code of ethics, there should be regular refresher courses programs in the form of seminars and workshops.

The policy on school health is ineffectively disseminated and poorly implemented in many contexts. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the factors that influence the dissemination and implementation of a policy on school health in Bayelsa state in southern Nigeria. A qualitative approach (using an exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design) was used to achieve the aim of the study. Non-probability purposive sampling was used to select 24 participants for the study. Semi-structured individual interviews and an Olympus VN-7800 audio tape were used to collect data. The data were analysed concurrently using line-by-line the six inductive steps of a thematic analysis as well as Atlas ti version 8.0 to ensure consistency of the findings. The results show that bureaucracy, ineffective monitoring and evaluation, insufficient financial support, political interference, lack of equity of service delivery, poor working conditions, ineffective communication, and lack of knowledge and awareness are perceived as barriers to such a policy. Accessibility to policy documents, collaborative partnership, existing school health programmes, and competent and willing personnel are perceived as positive factors for the dissemination and implementation of such a policy. This study would contribute towards the improvement of school health and educational practices if the findings and recommendations are implemented appropriately.
