This thesis focuses on a description and analysis of 130 hand-colored lantern slides of Korea made by William Wisner Chapin (American, 1851-1928) that are housed in the permanent collection of George Eastman House. In addition, it critically examines Chapin's National Geographic Magazine article, "Glimpses of Korea and China", published in November 1910. Both the lantern slides and the article were products of Chapin's 1909 world tour. This paper is not intended as an overview of the representation of early twentieth century Korea, nor is it a study of the lives of Korean people. It is a study of American society and popular culture at the turn of the last century through an examination of one person's photographs and their subsequent uses. It contextualizes the lantern slides by exploring the histories of lantern slides and the National Geographic Magazine, as well as illustrated travel lectures and travelogues, in an effort to consider the ways the lantern slides would have been understood at the timed of their creation and initial consumption. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that lantern slides are important and valuable historical objects, and that they are worthy of scholarly attention. In addition to the essay, the thesis includes a cataloguing of Chapin's lantern slides of Korea, providing a glimpse of early twentieth century Korea.

One of the most widespread photography formats before digitization, both for professional and amateur use, was the slide film (35mm, Leica format). Due to its compact size, compared to medium and large formats, this equipment was preferred by all photo reporters, photographs of the wild nature (probably the best known was the ones of the National Geographic magazine) and of course for the general people, creating family photos. Slides were the common way of presenting, when images had to be shown at wide audience. They appeared also in art – in galleries and on stage. For that reason there is enormous material shot on this medium, transferred regularly in digital format. The digitization itself is constantly changing and sometimes the same image is digitized numerous times. In this material I will follow the basic ways of digitization and the changes that occur. Important problem of the digital transfer still remains the limit of admissible postproduction, which inevitably is modifying the initial image. Keywords: Photography, Slides, Digitization, 35mm

In April 2013 the National Geographic magazine carried the cover title ‘Reviving extinct species, we can, but should we?’ suggesting that the technical challenges had been met, but some ethical concerns remained unresolved. Seven years later it is clear that this is not the case. Here we consider the technical scope, the uncertainties, and some of the bioethical issues raised by the future prospect of de-extinction. Biodiversity and welfare will not always align, and when a clash is unavoidable, a trade-off will be necessary, seeking the greatest overall value. De-extinction challenges our current conservation mind-set that seeks to preserve the species and population diversity that currently exists. But if we want to sustain and enhance a biodiverse natural world we might have to be forward looking and embrace the notion of bio-novelty by focussing more on ecosystem stability and resilience, rather than backward looking and seeking to try and recreate lost worlds.

This paper is an attempt to examine, through examples, the significance of collocation patterns for the translated text. To prove this, a corpus is collected from two translated articles in National Geographic magazine, Arabic version and their English counterparts. The given examples show that a great abundance of collocations patterns surfaced in the Arabic target texts (TT). The results obtained are used to argue that these patterns have cohesive, coherent, and aesthetic functions in the target text. To produce a translation that can read as much fluently and naturally as possible, professional translators work painstakingly to domesticate the source text as the magazine, in its Arabic version, is targeting different readership and culture. To accomplish their task, translators draw on their language competence especially 'collocation competence' as a domesticating strategy.
