This 2021 presidential address focuses on Mary O'Leary Wiley's theme for 2020-2021, It Takes a Village: Engaging with Solidarity in Practice, Anti-Black Racism Work, Advocacy, and Education. She traces the threads that led to her presidential vision in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened awareness of systemic racism, and details the contributions of many Society of Counseling Psychology members who contributed to our progress throughout the year. She discusses ways that counseling psychologists practice in ways that are different from many other psychologists in that they emphasize the environmental and prevention contexts, which lay the intellectual groundwork for psychologists engaging in social justice initiatives.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, vocational counselors in Switzerland more frequently worked from home (WFH) and less frequently worked on-site. The aim of this study was to assess how WFH corresponds with indicators of job performance and occupational wellbeing. More specifically, the current questionnaire study analyzed the increase in WFH, self-reported productivity, distractibility in WFH, current job satisfaction, work-life balance in WFH, and feeling of loneliness. Findings showed that the increase in WFH in vocational counseling psychologists during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increase in productivity and job satisfaction and with lower distractibility in WFH compared to work on-site. However, more frequent WFH was not significantly associated with improved work-life balance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vocational counselors who shared the office on-site with many colleagues experienced higher feeling of loneliness during WFH. Vocational counselors regarded the condition of WFH as productive and satisfying while work-life balance did not improve. The discussion sheds light on the potential WFH-related increase of boundary management demands.

In this article, we introduce the special issue of The Counseling Psychologist on the integration of practice, advocacy, and research in counseling psychology. This special issue was driven by Dr. Shavonne Moore-Lobban’s project as a member of the Society for Counseling Psychology Leadership Collaborative. The aim of the special issue is to highlight the unique practice, advocacy, and research contributions of practitioners, and specifically focus on the integration of the three roles of everyday counseling psychologists. There are six practitioner-led manuscripts that strengthen a focus within counseling psychology of the integration across the three roles, and through the diverse lens of counseling psychologists as therapists, supervisors, educators, researchers, program developers, and advocates. The development of this special issue is reviewed. We provide a brief summary of the manuscripts and discuss implications for continued integration.

In this paper, the author raises questions related to a new direction - the emerging applied psychology. Recalling his recent trips to Germany and America, Chelpanov speaks with respect about G. Munsterberg, who was the first to declare the need to apply psychological knowledge for various spheres of human activity, and, first of all, for pedagogy and "economic life." Absolutely new ideas were the proposals of foreign colleagues to introduce the position of consultant-psychologists who could conduct research and direct it, as well as teach the psychology of educators. G.I. Chelpanov substantiates the need to create institutions where they give advice on suitability for the profession, study the psychophysical characteristics of a person in relation to the profession, study the psychophysical conditions for the highest labor productivity. With regard to Russian life, he raises a question that requires an early resolution: how and where to train counseling psychologists. According to the author, scientific psychology in Russia is in the initial stage of development and there are few young psychologists who are ready to engage in science.

While counseling psychologists made substantial proposals to advance qualitative research since the special issue on related-methods was published 15-years ago (Haverkamp et al., 2005), the field continues to demonstrate an overreliance on quantitative methods. Though important for producing knowledge we can depend on, excessive use of these methods poses a barrier for counseling psychologists to address the needs of the communities that are at the core of our discipline’s values – those who are marginalized and underserved in society. In alignment with our values of social justice, advocacy, and empowerment, we propose counseling psychologists adopt a methodology within a critical paradigm to better address issues of inequality and inequity when working with underrepresented communities, such as digital storytelling. Rooted in a movement to increase access to art for marginalized communities in the 1970s and 80s, digital storytelling is an arts-based research methodology that captures first-person narrated accounts of peoples’ lives through the use of stories, photos, and videos, and empowers communities to be a part of research to create social change. We provide recommendations for using digital storytelling in counseling psychology research as outlined through five phases, including 1) digital storytelling’s critical paradigm, 2) project development, 3) implementation, 4) data analysis, and 5) dissemination. While doing so, we draw on examples from two digital storytelling projects we are familiar with, Immigrant Stories and OrigiNatives, providing a framework for a digital frontier in counseling psychology research.

Our society continues to be plagued with rampant acts of racism, sexism, xenophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and hate crimes. More so than ever before, engaging in difficult dialogues across differences is imperative. Counseling psychologists are equipped with a multitude of skills that make them uniquely suited to be leaders in effective dialogue engagement. This article provides an overview of a time-limited social justice training opportunity for emerging counseling psychologists called Community Conversations. Community Conversations are designated brave spaces where small groups of college students from varying backgrounds are invited to engage in facilitated interactive and experiential dialogues that explore difficult topics related to power, privilege, and marginalization. The current study examined the multi-tiered impact of the Community Conversations Initiative on both graduate student facilitators and undergraduate participants. We discuss results and practical implications.
