During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, vocational counselors in Switzerland more frequently worked from home (WFH) and less frequently worked on-site. The aim of this study was to assess how WFH corresponds with indicators of job performance and occupational wellbeing. More specifically, the current questionnaire study analyzed the increase in WFH, self-reported productivity, distractibility in WFH, current job satisfaction, work-life balance in WFH, and feeling of loneliness. Findings showed that the increase in WFH in vocational counseling psychologists during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increase in productivity and job satisfaction and with lower distractibility in WFH compared to work on-site. However, more frequent WFH was not significantly associated with improved work-life balance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vocational counselors who shared the office on-site with many colleagues experienced higher feeling of loneliness during WFH. Vocational counselors regarded the condition of WFH as productive and satisfying while work-life balance did not improve. The discussion sheds light on the potential WFH-related increase of boundary management demands.

This chapter identifies some of the main barriers and available supports that allow students with disabilities to participate in vocational rehabilitation (VR) transition programs. VR is a US federal program that attempts (as one of its goals) to introduce students with disabilities to employment experiences while they are still in school. The program uses access to paid internships and vocational counseling among several other components as key mechanisms to pursue its objectives. The chapter describes how the program is introduced from a best-practices perspective and proposes a conceptual model that highlights the individual, organizational, and contextual factors affecting employment outcomes for youth with disabilities. It also introduces the concept of entrepreneurship as another way to support the transition of high school youth with disabilities and discuss the implications of VR programs and supports on the employment outcomes of youth with disabilities.

There is limited research that considers students with migratory background cultural characteristics within vocational counseling processes in high schools of the United States, Latin America, and South Europe. A systematic literature review was made, guided by the question: In young migrants and second-generation migrants, how vocational counseling influences the achievement of being admitted into a university, comparing their life trajectories during secondary and high school? A total of ten articles, out of three hundred eleven initially found, were selected based on a protocol for the literature review (available on request). All these articles belong to the United States context. One also considered the Spain reality. Based on the protocol used, neither another Southern Europe article, nor any article on the Latin American context was selected. All the analyzed articles pointed up the central role of counseling processes regarding students' vocational decisions. Nonetheless, there is not much attention to counseling processes given to students with a migratory background and their specific needs. Among others, this fact reveals one of the failures of the system in giving post-secondary opportunities to these students. Limitations and recommendations to improve the vocational counseling processes and their influence on the achievement of admission into a university for these students are presented. Besides, some gender differences and the transcendental role of families in the vocational decisions of students are analyzed within the literature review.

Employment is often assumed to be the universally desirable outcome in vocational counseling and research; however, many personal and environmental factors affect individual decisions about the costs and benefits of work and the amount of work that is desired. The objective of this study was to validate an instrument capturing satisfaction with labor market participation regardless of one’s employment status. The Satisfaction with Labor Market Participation Survey (SLMP) was administered at two points in time to adults with disabilities. Analysis included a combination of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. A nine-item, two-factor scale emerged from the exploratory factor analysis and was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. All correlations were in the expected direction and regression analysis with both the SLMP and employment status showed the SLMP significantly predicting satisfaction with life while employment status did not after controlling for the SLMP. Preliminary data support the SLMP as a reliable and valid tool for assessing satisfaction with labor market participation for use with people with disabilities in vocational counseling and employment research.

The article aims to highlight the role of vocational counseling / education in preventing difficulties in school adaptation and in developing vocational identity. Counseling is an approach that has been shaped since the beginning of the last century, although the initial approach had slightly different connotations from the current ones. In the set of theories and models developed by recent researchers in the field of vocational and career identity Luyckx, Lent, Brown and other authors introduce the Student Career Construction Inventory (2018) to explain the processes involved in vocational and career development. The present study represents a theoretical analysis of the dimensions identified by the mentioned authors, in order to offer readers an integrative perspective on a useful working tool for researchers, psychologists, teachers, considering that the future orientation of the students is a goal of each one of them.

Holland’s (1997) scale is one of the most frequently used measures of vocational personality. The study describes the multiphase development and cultural validation of a short version of the sixfactor scale on a representative sample of 1735 Ecuadorian undergraduates. The Questionnaire of Vocational Preferences of Youth (Inventario de las Preferencias Profesionales de Jovenes: IPPJ) as the first culturally-rooted tool for Ecuadorian youth corresponds with the circular model by Holland (1997). Factorial analysis (EFA and CFA), validity, follow-up study, and reliability indicators support the factorial equivalence of the new, short version of the IPPJ. Some practical implications are outlined for vocational guidance in Ecuador.
